Warning: Spoilers follow for Avengers: Endgame.

A lot of characters suffered serious effects from the events of Avengers: Endgame that will likely stay with them a while. Natasha and Tony (and Thanos and company) are dead. Gamora is no longer the Gamora we know, having not experienced the last five years we saw her go through in the Guardians of the Galaxy films. Scott Lang’s daughter is now five years older. And so on, and so on.

Arguably, of all the living characters, Hulk suffered the worst. Bruce Banner not only lost Natasha and Tony, he also severely wounded himself performing the Snap. Speaking with ComicBook.com, co-director Joe Russo confirmed that — barring any magic or super-science options — the injury to his right arm is permanent.

“He’s lost an arm,” Russo said. “He lost Natasha. That’s not coming back. He’s damaged himself. I don’t know. It’s interesting. That’s permanent damage, the same way that it was permanent damage with Thanos. It’s irreversible damage. His arm, if you noticed, is a lot skinnier. It’s blackened. So, he loses a lot of strength there.”

Russo did acknowledge the aforementioned healing possibilities, saying, “Maybe someone helps him repair that. Maybe someone gives him a new arm. I have no idea where that character goes from here.”

Russo and his brother Anthony are done with the MCU for now, so Hulk’s fate is in anothers’ hands now. The film is currently in theaters.
