Thoughts on the Legion of Super-Heroes’ Return to DC Comics

Last week we asked, Is Rob Liefeld Right About DC’s Collapse?. Here’s what some of you had to say:

Excollector: “When it comes to driving a business off a cliff who would know more than Rob Liefeld. His hottest properties couldn’t sustain publication and he was fired out a company he helped found. Accusations of theft and copying art work round out the disaster package. I’m not saying DC has been great lately but Rob isn’t a guy I’d take advice from for long term business plans.”

Aejhaa: “I mean, yeah DC is very (too much in my opinion) batman central but driving off a cliff soon, highly doubt it. If the company can survive cry for justice and new 52, they can survive whatever coming.

I just hope it happens without anymore death and suffering to arrow characters.”

CM Chunk: “If I had a nickel for every time I’ve heard someone predict DC or Marvel’s demise… I’d probably have a quarter, but my point is, he’s not the first to say this and he won’t be the last, and he’s likely no more right than they were.”

Shawn S. Lealos: “Did you see Mark Millar’s comments to Liefeld? According to Millar, DC has sucked for like 20 years but he feels their current product is better than anything they have done since the ’80s and he thinks it is great. Interesting to hear another non-DC writer chime in.”

Benjamin J: “I dunno…DC’s management has been a clusterfuck for a long time now, and they’ve managed to stay afloat. I thought Rebirth was going to be their turning point and Doomsday Clock was going to right a lot of wrongs that Flashpoint/New 52 created, but that seems to have stalled out significantly (especially due to Doomsday Clock’s huge delays), so where DC goes from here is anyone’s guess.

Liefeld might have more insight than most, having worked for them and knowing their ins and outs, but still, he’s not high on my list of people I’d take advice from when it comes to running a comic book company.”

Jesuszilla: “He’s right about the Batman comment at least. I will never understand how DC has all these cool heroes and yet can only seem to market Batman and at times Superman.

I don’t even want to touch on how awful Warner Bros has been for DC. WB plays it so safe these days and just follow trends instead of trusting getting good talent to highlight their characters.

DC could have done something very interesting with Suicide Squad for example and leave a mark with very interesting and complicated villains to match the heroes but they can’t seem to get anything right.

Still, I doubt DC is on its last leg or going to collapse. They just do a bunch of stupid shit, don’t have faith in anything not Batman and refuses to give anything not Batman related the chance to grow and develop.”

Thoughts on the Legion of Super-Heroes Return

If you’ve read my stuff for any length of time, you know that I’m a huge fan of the Legion of Super-Heroes. Some of my favorite stories in comics have been Legion-centric and as a kid I was so into whatever roster they had at the time. The whole concept worked for me.

I was excited to read that the Legion of Super-Heroes will be making their return in Superman #14 as Brian Michael Bendis brings the Legion to the present-day and meets up with members of the Superman family.

“They have come here for a reason, and that reason is because of something that happened in the Superman family. And that is all going to be revealed on page,” Bendis told Newsarama. “I know a lot of people are wondering what their connection is to the story. I’ve been teasing almost to the point of cruelty on Twitter about this.”

Bendis will take it further for two issues in September and October with Legion of Super-Heroes: Millennium, which will be part of a wider event detailing the DCU’s future. Then, and finally, after that, Bendis will launch a new ongoing Legion of Super-Heroes series.

We know the potential the Legion has. When you have someone who knows and understands why the book works, the stories are some of the best out there. Plus, with so many characters to explore, you can always find something to enjoy.

Bottomline, for me, this is great news and I’m all in (can Movies & TV use that?) on the return of the Legion. What are your thoughts?
