The Invisible Man On Its Way to $25 Million Opening Weekend
Blumhouse and Universal have a hit on their hands with The Invisible Man, which is looking to take in $25 million after a $1.65 million Thursday night. The horror reboot brought in $1.65 million in Thursday preview sales and is headed toward a $9.1 million Friday (including the previews). The early estimate is above the $20 million that Universal was projecting.
The Elisabeth Moss-starring take on the classic Universal horror film is riding high on a wave of critical buzz, with an 89% Rotten Tomatoes consensus. The CinemaScore won’t be in until tomorrow, but the film does have a 90% audience rating on RT which suggests good word of mouth.
Horror is traditionally a front-loaded genre, but if the film holds well enough it could end up rising even higher to the $30 million range. Either way, this is a hit for a film that cost just $7 million plus marketing. The film makes the first horror hit of 2020, a year that has seen consistent bombs in the genre including The Grudge, The Turning, and Gretel & Hansel. Even Fantasy Island, the highest grossing horror film of the year so far, is only at $21.7 million thus far and won’t finish out above $30 million.
