Hello everyone and welcome to 411mania’s LIVE coverage of UFC 272, I’m Robert Winfree and I’ll be your host for the evening. The UFC is back on PPV for this event, and boy has this event suffered a lot of setbacks. This event was originally supposed to host the trilogy fight between Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway for the featherweight title with a co-main event rematch between Aljamain Sterling and Petr Yan clashing over the bantamweight title. Well needless to say neither of those fights are happening here, Volkanovski and Holloway fell apart entirely and is now Volkanovski vs. Chan Sung Jung set for UFC 273 while the rematch between Yan and Sterling also got bumped to UFC 273 to accommodate Sterling’s recovery timeline from neck surgery. Now we’ve got a rare non-title main event when friends turned bitter rivals Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal will fight it out. The co-main event was to be former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos taking on rising contender Rafael Fiziev (a fight that itself was supposed to main event UFC on ESPN+ 59 a couple of weeks ago) but during fight week Fiziev came down with COVID and now Renato Moicano steps in on short notice to battle dos Anjos in a five round co-main event. Elsewhere on the cad rising contender Bryce Mitchell meets his stiffest test to date when he clashes with Edson Barboza. We might get a strawweight contender out of the clash between Marina Rodriguez and Yan Xiaonan on the prelims, and there’s a fight between ranked flyweights buried on the early prelims because the UFC hates flyweights.

UFC 272 comes to the world from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. We’ve got Jon Anik, Joe Rogan, and Michael Bisping on commentary. As for the rules Nevada uses a hybrid set up, they’ve adopted most of the newer rules but you still only need one hand on the mat to be considered downed. We do have the use of instant replay, an out of cage official who can request it, and the fight can be restarted after the use of instant replay if that’s applicable to the situation. Also keep in mind we’re in the 30 foot cage tonight.

Michal Oleksiejczuk has gone 2-2 in his last four fights but is currently on a two fight winning streak and if he can get that to three in a row here he might be looking at some ranked opposition for his next fight. Dustin Jacoby hasn’t lost since returning to the UFC in 2020, going 4-0 with 1 No Contest during that time and now he’s looking to earn a step up in class if he can continue his winning ways tonight. Jacoby is a slight -180 favorite while Oleksiejczuk is the +155 underdog.

Jalin Turner is on a three fight winning streak with all of those being finishes, he’s hoping to extend that streak tonight and start making a case to take on some bigger names in the future. Jamie Mullarkey has gone 2-2 in the UFC but he’s on a two fight winning streak with both of those being stoppage wins, he’s likewise trying to extend his success and start separating himself from the crowded pack at lightweight. OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Jalin Turner via TKO, punches, at :46 of Round 2

Great outing from Turner, who gets an interview after that one. Turner says he’s worked a lot on his inside fighting and he feels he’s composed everywhere. He talks us through some highlights then says he’s aiming for the title eventually and he’s going to keep going forward.

Here’s the finish, the clip doesn’t have a vicious knee to the body that Turner landed which is what really spelled the end. You can see Mullarkey’s rear hand tight to his body to protect the ribs, and the way he falls is typical of what happens when the body gives out. The right hook from Turner is nice too, but it’s more icing on the cake of the body work Turner invested in.

That wraps up the prelims, on to PPV for the main card.

Unsurprisingly dos Anjos is the favorite at -170 but the +150 on Moicano should tell you how respected Moicano is as a talent. Also keep in mind this is a five round fight.

I don’t hate giving Moicano the fifth, I don’t agree but it’s not egregious. Mic time for dos Anjos, he gives glory to God first then thanks Moicano for taking the fight on ridiculously short notice and notes a lot of people ran away from this fight. He says he felt a little ring rust in here, and notes the lightweight division is stacked and thinks he might have overtaken Frankie Edgar for most time in the Octagon. To close he hopes Masvidal wins the main event and says he’d like to fight Masvidal for the BMF belt.

Colby Covington has established himself as one of the best welterweights in the world, unfortunately he also has two losses in title fights to current champion Kamaru Usman. Covington is hoping that a high profile win here will keep him close to the title as well as hold off his first ever losing streak. Jorge Masvidal is on a two fight losing streak, that’s somewhat mitigated by both of those coming in title fights with Kamaru Usman. If Masvidal wants to retain his top ranking he’s going to need a win here, and frankly beating Covington would be the best quality win on his resume. The odds are with Covington at a rather heavy -310 to a +240 payout on Masvidal.

No issues with any of those scores, a little surprised that only one judge gave Masvidal the 4th but again Covington owned it numerically outside of the knockdown. Mic time for Covington, he puts over Joe Rogan, thanks the military, law enforcement, and first responders out there. On to business, he just took care of Miami street trash now he wants some Louisiana swamp rat and calls out Dustin Poirier before walking off.

Masvidal gets an interview as well, he knew he was off with the wrestling and knew Covington was the better wrestler. He feels he should have had more moments like he did in the fourth but again reiterates he was flat and didn’t quite have it tonight.
