Deadline reports that Robert Kirkman’s Skybound Entertainment is teaming up with Hasbro Entertainment to produce a new adult animated series inspired by Skybound’s Energon Universe comics series of the same name. The comics franchise, which launched in 2023, encompasses such popular Hasbro IP as G.I. Joe and Transformers, which combine into one epic mythology, which also features Void Rivals.

Deadline notes that the new animated project is expected to go out to buyers shortly. Lucifer showrunner Joe Henderson is reportedly attached to write the new adaptation. The new series is planned to have an “adult sensibility” in the vein of Kirkman’s mega-hit adult animated series, Invincible, based on the comic series Kirkman co-created, which is currently awaiting its fourth season on Prime Video and has already been renewed for Season 5.

Kirkman previously won the comic book publishing rights for the signature Hasbro brands in 2021. He later launched the Energon Universe, which features the G.I. Joe characters existing alongside the Autobots and Decepticons, as well as the new Skybound IP, Void Rivals. Kirkman co-created the latter series with Lorenzo De Felici. The Energon Universe has since become one of Hasbro’s bestselling comic lines ever, selling more than seven million combined units worldwide.

This wouldn’t be the first time the G.I. Joe franchise dabbled in adult animation before. Hasbro and Titmouse, Inc. previously produced the adult animated web series, G.I. Joe Resolute, for Adult Swim Video back in 2009. It featured a series of anime-influenced animated shorts. Although the project was well-received, it never garnered any follow-ups.

Hasbro Entertainment is currently seeking to launch its brands across various media platforms, including scripted and unscripted versions of Clue at Sony Entertainment, a new live-action Dungeons & Dragons-themed Forgotten Realms series at Netflix, a Monopoly film with LuckyChap and Lionsgate, and Magic: The Gathering live-action film and TV universe in partnership with Legendary, along with an animated series at Netflix, a live-action TV reboot of the Power Rangers franchise at 20th Century TV and Disney+, and more.

With the Energon Universe only now being taken out to buyers soon, the show could still be a long time away. Meanwhile, Robert Kirkman and Skybound’s Invincible animated series returns in March 2026 on Prime Video.
