It took an endurance trial, but Mercedes Mone was able to defeat Maya World at AEW X NJPW Forbidden Door to win the Women’s Owen Hart Tournament again. Mone and World battled in the finals of the tournament on Sunday night’s PPV, a match that turned out to be much tougher than perhaps Mone intended.

World brought everything she had to the match, riding the wave of momentum from her win over Athena in the semifinals. She escaped the Statement Maker more than once and fought back, even applying her own Statement Maker on Mone late in the match. Mone was unable to put World away and nearly fell to her a few times before she finally hit a Backstabber into the Statement Maker, wrenching back deeply on it to make World finally tap.

This is Mercedes Mone’s second straight Women’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament win; she won the tournament last year by beating Jamie Hayer in the finals. She will now go on to challenge for the AEW Women’s World Championship currently held by Thekla at AEW All In: London. You can see clips from the AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door match below.
