River Horse is delving into the world of RPGs with another 1980s fantasy icon in The Dark Crystal. The company has announced that they are developing the Dark Crystal Adventure Game, their second such RPG after they gave Labyrinth a similar treatment.

The company noted in the announcement that the adventure is being written by Janet Forbes of World Anvil as well as Jack Cesaar, who worked on both the Labyrinth Adventure Game amd Tales of Equestria for River Horse. It goes on to note that the book will include illustrations by Brian Froud, Johnny Frazer-Allen, Chris Caesar and others, with the book described as follows:

“Like the Labyrinth Adventure Game, it will include a simple rules system and GM toolkit and a 100-scenes adventure, which can be played either with our rules, or any other rule-set you like. “

The Dark Crystal was directed by Jim Henson and Frank Oz and released in 1982, becoming a hallmark of 1980s fantasy filmmaking. Featuring the voices of Stephen Garlick, Lisa Maxwell, Billie Whitelaw, and Percy Edwards, the film is set on the planet Thra and centers on Jen, a Gelfling on a quest to restore balance to Thra and overthrow the ruling Skeksis by restoring a powerful broken Crystal. A prequel series, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, bowed on Netflix in August of 2019.

The book will be available in 2021.
