Pound For Pound

1) “The Lioness” Amanda Nunes (17-4)

Birthday: May 30, 1988

Height: 5’8

Weight (lbs.): 135

Currently fighting with: UFC

Last 5 fights:

– vs. Cris Cyborg – Win via KO (punches) – UFC 232 – December 29, 2018

– vs. Raquel Pennington – Win via TKO (strikes) – UFC 224 – May 12, 2018

– vs. Valentina Shevchenko – Win via decision (split) – UFC 215 – September 9, 2017

– vs. Ronda Rousey – Win via TKO (strikes) – UFC 207 – December 30, 2016

– vs. Miesha Tate – Win via submission (rear naked choke) – UFC 200: Tate vs. Nunes – July 9, 2016

Next scheduled appearance:

– vs. Holly Holm – UFC 239 – July 6, 2019

Comment: Nunes has signed for her first fight since becoming the latest UFC champ champ in December, a bantamweight title defense at UFC 239 against former champion Holly Holm. It will be Nunes’ fourth title defense at 135-pounds as she tries to make her way to Ronda Rousey’s record of six successful defenses.

2) Cris “Cyborg” Justino (20-2, 1 NC)

Height: 5’8

Weight (lbs.): 145

Birthday: July 9, 1985

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

– vs. Amanda Nunes – Loss via KO (punches) – UFC 232 – December 29, 2018

– vs. Yana Kunitskaya – Win via TKO (strikes) – UFC 222 – March 3, 2018

– vs. Holly Holm – Win via decision (unanimous) – UFC 219 – December 30, 2017

– vs. Tonya Evinger – Win via TKO (strikes) – UFC 214 – July 29, 2017

– vs. Lina Lansberg – Win via TKO (strikes) – UFC Fight Night – September 24, 2016

Next scheduled appearance:

– vs. Felicia Spencer – UFC 230 – July 27, 2019

Comment: Cyborg will return to action following her first knockout loss this summer against undefeated prospect/school teacher and former Invicta champion Felicia Spencer. A black belt in BJJ and Taekwondo, Spencer debuted in the UFC last month and choked out Megan Anderson. Cyborg will be a massive betting favorite going into this fight with the only question centered around how she does in her comeback from the knockout in December.

3) Valentina Shevchenko (16-3)

Height: 5’5

Weight (lbs.): 125

Birthday: March 7, 1988

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

– vs. Joanna Jedrzejczyk – Win via decision (unanimous) – UFC 231 – December 8, 2018

– vs. Priscila Cachoeira – Win via submission (rear naked choke) – UFC Fight Night – February 3, 2018

– vs. Amanda Nunes – Loss via decision (split) – UFC 215 – September 9, 2017

– vs. Julianna Pena – Win via submission (armbar) – UFC on Fox – January 28, 2017

vs. Holly Holm – Win via decision (unanimous) – UFC on Fox – July 23, 2016

Next scheduled appearance:

– vs. Jessica Eye – UFC 238 – June 8, 2019

Comment: Shevchenko will make her first title defense at flyweight this weekend against Jessica Eye. After a stretch at bantamweight which saw Eye go 1-5 with one no contest due to marijuana, she returned to flyweight last year and reeled off three wins. Shevchenko is a big favorite for this fight, anywhere from -1200 to as large as a -2000 favorite.

4) Jessica Andrade (20-6)

Height: 5’2

Weight (lbs.): 115

Birthday: September 25, 1991

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

– vs. Rose Namajunas – Win via KO (slam) – UFC 237 – May 11, 2019

– vs. Karolina Kowalkiewicz – Win via KO (punch) UFC 228 – September 8, 2018

– vs. Tecia Torres – Win via decision (unanimous) – UFC on Fox – February 24, 2018

– vs. Claudia Gadelha – Win via decision (unanimous) – UFC Fight Night – September 22, 2017

– vs. Joanna Jedrzejczyk – Loss via decision (unanimous) – UFC 211 – May 13, 2017

Next scheduled appearance:

– Unknown

Comment: Prior to signing with the UFC, Andrade was one of the top Brazilian prospects. She was finished by Liz Carmouche in her first UFC fight (and her first U.S. fight), but she reeled off a three-fight win streak afterwards. Still, she went 3-2 in her next five fights leading to her first title fight against Joanna Jedrzejczyk. Although she lost the fight, having gone five rounds with the champion did not do any damage to her confidence. Since that loss in 2017, she won three consecutive fights leading up to her knockout win over Rose Namajunas at UFC 237. While currently there are no male Brazilian champions in the UFC, Amanda Nunes and Andrade represent their country well.

5) Rose “Thug” Namajunas (8-4)

Height: 5’5

Weight (lbs.): 115

Birthday: June 29, 1992

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

– vs. Jessica Andrade – Loss via KO (slam) – UFC 237 – May 11, 2019

– vs. Joanna Jedrzejczyk – Win via decision (unanimous) – UFC 223 – April 7, 2018

– vs. Joanna Jedrzejczyk – Win via TKO (strikes) – UFC 217 – November 4, 2017

– vs. Michelle Waterson – Win via submission (rear naked choke) – UFC on Fox – April 15, 2017

– vs. Karolina Kowalkiewicz – Loss via decision (split) – UFC 201 – July 30, 2016

Next scheduled appearance:

– Unknown

Comment: Rose dropped the strawweight championship last month courtesy of a second round slam from Jessica Andrade. It was a competitive fight until that slam. Namajunas was unable to tuck her chin, leading to her taking the full force of the slam on her head, because she was working for a Kimura-lock. It marked the first knockout loss of her career. After the loss, Namajunas was talking about potentially retiring although it’s okay to chalk that up to the emotions of having just fought and loss plus doing so by knockout. If she does return to action, she should be able to walk right back into a title fight with Andrade.
