Hello everyone and welcome to 411mania’s LIVE coverage of UFC 315, I’m Robert Winfree and I’ll be your host for the event. The UFC is back in Montreal for the first time in a decade and they’ve brought mostly OK PPV card, the prelims leave a fair bit to be desired though. In the main event newly crowned welterweight champion Belal Muhammad goes for his first title defense against Jack Della Maddalena. Della Maddalena got this shot because Shavkat Rakhmonov is dealing with a knee injury but while Muhammad has a reputation for being a less than exciting fighter there’s a chance we get some interesting stuff in parts for that fight. The co-main event is for the women’s flyweight title, Valentina Shevchenko regained the belt by blanking Alexa Grasso in their third fight after a truly awful scorecard in their second fight resulted in a draw, but she’s trying to keep a hold of the belt against surging contender Manon Fiorot who has looked kind of inevitable on her rise up through the ranks. We’ve also got Jose Aldo and Aiemann Zahabi fighting, they were supposed to be at bantamweight but Aldo weighed in at 143 pounds so they moved it to bantamweight and Zahabi came in officially at 142. Alexa Grasso and Natalia Silva battle for position around the title and Benoir Saint Denis tries to halt a recent skid against late replacement opponent Kyle Prepolec. The prelims are a little weak but we’ve got an acceptable main card so let’s hope the action delivers.

UFC 315 comes to the world from the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. We’ve got Jon Anik, Daniel Cormier, and Dominick Cruz on commentary. Hopefully we get an official rules update for this one, I’m not sure if all the new ones are in play in Quebec but I hope so. I also continue to hope fighters figure out how to weaponize the downed fighter definition because there have been quite a few opportunities that haven’t been capitalized on.

OK, per some reporting, the unified rules will be in effect but you still can’t foot stomp. Man Quebec is just a weird place.

Brad Katona has gone 2-2 in his return to the UFC, most recently he lost to Jean Matsumoto and now he’s looking to rebound and avoid his first losing streak since 2019 when he got cut from the UFC last time. Bekzat Almakhan dropped his UFC debut when he stepped in on moderately short notice to fight Umar Nurmagomedov, that loss broke an eight fight winning streak. Now Almakhan is trying to showcase more of his skills against a more skill appropriate opponent. The odds are with Almakhan at -155 to +130 on Katona.

Bantamweight Bout: Bekzat Almakhan (11-2, 136 lbs.) vs. Brad Katona (14-4, 136 lbs.)

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Almakhan for his work. Mic time for Almakhan and the translator, he opens with some broken English to say that was the surprise he’d been planning. He switches to his native language to talk about preparing hard for this and thanks God. Asked about the future he wants to fight soon and thinks he can be a champion, then gives glory to God again. To close he thanks his team and Kazakhstan.

Daniel Santos has gone 2-1 in the UFC and is on a two fight winning streak, he’s been out of action for almost two years with three fights falling out during that time but now he’s finally back and looking to remind everyone that he’s a notable prospect. He is moving up to featherweight for the first time in the UFC though. Jeong Yeong Lee has gone 2-1 in the UFC but he’s coming off of a loss and now tries to avoid his first losing streak. OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Daniel Santos via unanimous decision (30-27 x3)

I’m a little surprised Lee didn’t get the first on any card but it was close enough for me not to be up in arms. Mic time for Santos and the translator, he opens with some English and then goes to Portuguese as he thanks the crowd then moves to talking about finally getting back to action after a long layoff.

Marc-Andre Barriault is on a three fight losing streak with the last two being finish losses in the first round, he really needs to get back on the winning side of things to get a little job security. Bruno Silva is in a similar position as he’s on a four fight losing streak and a fifth in a row could easily end his time with the UFC. The odds are with Barriault at -175 to +145 for Silva.

Middleweight Bout: Marc-Andre Barriault (16-9 1 NC, 185 lbs.) vs. Bruno Silva (23-12, 187 lbs.)*

They trade power hand punches. Knee from Silva in close. Ankle pick from Silva but Barriault wrestles up into a clinch. Elbow from Barriault then a knee as he’s got Silva on the fence. An elbow from Barriault floors Silva and that’ll do it.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Marc-Andre Barriault via KO, elbows, at 1:27 of Round 1

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Barriault for his work. Silva was down for a while after the knockout and the medics had get him on stretcher so he’s hospital bound. Mic time for Barriault, he hopes Silva is OK but tonight was his time and after all the recent struggles and losses he feels he showed he’s still a UFC caliber fighter. He knew what was on the line tonight and he had to win, then he talks us through the finish to close.

Navajo Stirling is undefeated including his UFC in December of last year, he’s looking to prove himself a prospect to watch in a division that remains desperately in need of them. Ivan Erslan dropped a split decision to Ion Cutelaba for his UFC debut last year and now he’s looking for that all important first UFC win. Stirling is a notable favorite at -305 to a +245 comeback on Erslan.

Mic time for Stirling after the fight, he knew he needed to show up for this fight and he got back into the fight after a tough first round. He thought he might have gotten a finish in the final round but couldn’t quite find it.

Modestas Bukauskas has gone 4-1 since returning to the UFC in 2023, he’s currently on a two fight winning streak and is looking to make a move towards fighting bigger names with another win here. Ion Cutelaba is on a two fight winning streak and has shown a slightly more sophisticated game recently, he’s likewise trying to earn a shot at bigger names by growing his winning streak. Very close one here, -120 on Cutelaba to an even +100 for Bukauskas.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Bukauskas, 29-28 Bukauskas overall

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Modestas Bukauskas via split decision (27-30, 30-27, 29-28)

Well 30-27 each way was way off as Bukauskas shouldn’t take the second and Cutelaba shouldn’t have the third. Daniel Cormier is bitter about being very wrong with his scoring. No interview for the winner.

Jessica Andrade is a former strawweight champion, fought for the flyweight title, and has more than a few wins at bantamweight during her tenure with the UFC which dates back to 2013. Andrade has gone just 2-4 in her last six fights though and really needs to avoid another losing streak here if she wants to be taken seriously as a player in the title scene. Jasmine Jasudavicius brings a four fight winning streak into this fight, it’s the highest profile bout of her career but a win over a former champion like Andrade would easily be the biggest of her career. Jasudavicius is the solid favorite at -270 while a +220 comeback on Andrade might tempt a few bettors out there.

Women’s Flyweight Bout: #7 Jessica Andrade (26-13, 126 lbs.) vs. #9 Jasmine Jasudavicius (13-3, 124 lbs.)

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Jasmine Jasudavicius via Submission, rear naked choke, at 2:40 of Round 1

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mrs. Jasudavicius for her work. Mic time for Jasudavicius, she feels amazing after this win then talks about knowing her skills relative to Andrade’s and knowing she could get it done. She talks about her hard work, then when asked about the future she wants anyone ranked above her and is still aiming at the getting to the title.

Mike Malott had a pretty epic collapse in his fight with Neil Magny but he bounced back with a win over Trevin Giles and now he’s trying to build another winning streak and prove he’s still a bright spot for Canadian MMA. Charles Radtke has gone 3-1 in the UFC, only losing to Carlos Prates and most recently stopping Matthew Semelsberger in less than a minute. Radtke is trying to build another winning streak and remind everyone he’s still a rising prospect. The odds like Malott at -220 to Radtke’s +180.

Mic time for Malott after that, he thanks the crowd for their support and gets emotional talking about how proud he is to represent the people of Canada. He talks us through the finish to close.

Well that’s it for the prelims, onto PPV for the main card.

Benoit Saint-Denis has gone 5-3 in the UFC but he’s on a two fight losing streak right now, that’s slightly mitigated by those losses coming to Dustin Poirier and Renato Moicano but still his ranking is in peril here. He was supposed to fight Joel Alvarez here but Alvarez pulled out and now he’s defending that ranking against a returning UFC fighter. Kyle Prepolec went 0-2 in the UFC back in 2019, he’s taking this shot back in the promotion on short notice but could score a huge upset win in the process. All things considered it’s not surprising Saint-Denis is the biggest favorite on the card at a whopping -1350 to Prepolec’s +800.

Lightweight Bout: Kyle Prepolec (18-8, 156 lbs.) vs. #13 Benoit Saint Denis (13-3 1 NC, 156 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Saint Denis is an inch taller with three inches of reach advantage. Both men fighting southpaw. They both show leg kicks then Saint Denis hits a takedown near the fence into half guard. Prepolec looks for a kimura, he’s got the double wrist lock but he wont be able to do much with it as Saint Denis moves towards the ride position. Saint Denis gets his arm free and starts working to free his arms to fire punches. Prepolec is still fighting for wrist control but he’s losing height to try and wall walk. Saint Denis is able to land a couple of punches and elbows then grabs at the choke but he can’t find the angle for it. Another choke attempt but Prepolec is able to stand into the clinch and Saint Denis hits another takedown into the ride position. Saint Denis gets both hooks in and starts fishing for the choke. Body triangle now for Saint Denis and he’s really after the choke but Prepolec is defending fairly well thus far. Saint Denis transitions to the ride as Prepolec goes to his knees, Saint Denis fires punches then keeps the back as they stand before jumping to the backpack position. Choke attempt from Saint Denis again but Prepolec will survive the round.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Saint Denis, borderline 10-8 given Prepolec’s lack of offense

ROUND TWO: Prepolec lands a left hand to start the round. Saint Denis pushes forward and both men land some punches. Saint Denis keeps up with left hands but takes an eye poke so we’ve got a time out. On the restart Saint Denis lands a left hand that bothers Prepolec. Both men miss lefts then Saint Denis lands a body kick and Prepolec lands a counter punch before they clinch up. Saint Denis with knees then an elbow. Another knee from Saint Denis then an elbow as he’s got Prepolec on the fence. Saint Denis with more elbows before Prepolec is able to pull free. They trade punches then Saint Denis gets another clinch and unloads with elbows and knees. Saint Denis slips to the back standing and drives Prepolec down into half guard. Arm triangle attack from Saint Denis, he passes to side control and that’ll do it as Prepolec has to tap.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Benoit Saint Denis via Submission, arm triangle choke, at 2:35 of Round 2

Mic time for Saint Denis, he goes with some French then does his own translation to thank the fans again and admits he had to work through the first round and then got to show himself more in the second. He calls out anyone ranked like Gamrot, Hooker, or Gaethje as he wants to enter into the halls of violence. He talks through the finish to close.

Alexa Grasso is a former flyweight champion but has been fighting Valentina Shevchenko since 2023 going 1-1-1 with her in the process, but her last win was that upset win to claim the title in 2023. Grasso’s skills seemed to diminish in each of those fights and if she wants a shot at reclaiming the title she needs to get back on the winning side of things here. Natalia Silva is riding a large 12 fight winning streak including six wins in the UFC against an increasing level of opposition, now she’s taking on her second former champion and a win could very easily secure a title shot next. The odds like Silva at -250 while a +205 payout on Grasso might tempt a few bettors out there.

Women’s Flyweight Bout: #1 Alexa Grasso (16-4-1, 126 lbs.) vs. #5 Natalia Silva (18-5-1, 126 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Grasso has an inch of height and reach advantage. A bit of early feinting from Silva as she looks to establish distance with kicks. Calf kick from Silva. Grasso lands a jab. SCORECARD: 10-9 Silva

ROUND TWO: Grasso tries to get moving forward to start the round and resumes showing her jab. They trade calf kicks. Leg kick from Silva. Silva with a head kick and a bit of a follow up left hand. Silva with a jab then a counter left hook again, Grasso just can’t find the distance and is getting punished for overthrowing her offense. Another jab from Silva. Grasso lunges and eats a couple of counter punches. Head kick then a right hand from Silva both partially land. Silva has started playing with southpaw in places now to throw a more powerful left high kick. Right hand from Silva. Grasso gets close and they both swing punches but Silva gets the better of things as the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Silva, 20-18 Silva overall

ROUND THREE: Silva shows more high kicks as the round starts. Grasso is trying to get close and force more brawling but Silva is angling and countering. They trade punches one last time to close the round.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Silva, 30-27 Silva overall

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Natalia Silva via unanimous decision (30-27 x3)

Silva gets an interview with the translator, she plays with the crowd then gives glory to God. She knew her style would give Grasso problems and then when asked about the future she wants to watch the title fight but thinks the title will look good on her.

We get our next Hall of Fame inductee announcement. This time around it’s Vitor Belfort. Given the longevity, time in UFC, PRIDE, UFC again, costing Michael Bisping an eye, I mean TRT Belfort is still kind of a iconic beast along with sea level Cain. Jokes aside, no issues with Belfort going into the Hall of Fame.

Jose Aldo is one of the greats of the sport, a former WEC and UFC featherweight champion and previously fought for the bantamweight title as well. Now Aldo is trying to avoid a losing streak and he’ll be looking to move back to featherweight full time going forward after his weight issues forced a last might weight class switch for this fight. Aiemann Zahabi is on a five fight winning streak and if he can add a legend like Aldo to his resume he might be in line for an even bigger opponent his next time out. Despite the weight issues the odds like Aldo at -190 to a +160 comeback for Zahabi.

Featherweight Bout: Jose Aldo (32-9, 143 lbs.) vs. Aiemann Zahabi (12-2, 142 lbs.)

Can’t argue with that too much but I thought Aldo should have gotten that. Mic time for Zahabi, he gives glory to God then talks about taking the fight up a weight class and showing up for Montreal. He admits to being rocked in the third but he was prepared for bad moments and focused on recovering then winning the next exchange. Asked about the future he wants to fight Marlon Vera, seems reasonable.

Aldo gets an interview with the translator as well, he’s taken off his gloves and thanks the UFC brass for everything but thinks he doesn’t have it anymore. This was just a tough week and his body has started giving up on him so he’s pretty sure he’s walking away. Utter shame he’s leaving on a loss that he probably should have won.

Manon Fiorot hasn’t lost since he professional debut in 2018 and has gone 7-0 in the UFC, she’s now coming into her first title opportunity and could become the first full UFC champion that France has produced. The closest the country has been was Ciryl Gane’s interim heavyweight title, but Fiorot is after the full title tonight. Valentina Shevchenko is the flyweight champion and just started her second title reign when she defeated Alexa Grasso last year to reclaim the belt, if she’s able to turn this second title reign into something significant it will further her legacy as one of the best female fighters the sport has seen. The odds like the challenger Fiorot at -130 while any plus money on Shevchenko, +110 in this case, has to be a tempting value bet.

Well that was a ton more fun that any of us expected. Mic time for Della Maddalena, he says it feels good to be champion. He expected a tough fight from a pressure based opponent but does feel he could have been sharper with his punching. He puts over Muhammad again but mentions he couldn’t spend too much time on his back and when he did get there he got his breath then got back up. Asked about the end of the fight he talks us through the end of the last round and notes he wanted a late finish but Muhammad is a tough dude. Asked next about possibly fighting Islam Makhachev next he says it would be a great challenge and he’ll get him back for Volk.
