Joe Schilling Facing Possible Battery Charge After Bar Altercation

Bellator fighter Joe Schilling is facing a possible misdemeanor charge for battery after allegedly punching another man in a bar. MMA Fighting reports that 31 year-old Justin Balboa has made contact with police over the incident in which he alleged Schilling “hit him for no reason.”
Video of the incident was posted online, in which Balboa backed up and bumped into Schilling who moved past him. Balboa appears to get Schilling’s attention, and the fighter turned around to face him. Moments later, Schilling knocked Balboa down and apparently out.
According to the report, Balboa told police that he “only wanted the incident documented in order to file a civil suit against the establishment.” Police noted that he was clearly intoxicated while in contact with them and a manager for the establishment said that Balboa “was extremely intoxicated and had possibly made an improper remark about the girlfriend/wife of the male who had struck him, which caused the fight to escalate.”
The manager also said that Balboa is a regular “who routinely causes problems at the establishment due to his intoxication level.” The police report states that several other patrons corroborated the manager’s story and said that Balboa actually started the fight. Balboa apparently contacted the police department and said that he had decided he changed his mind and wanted Schilling prosecuted. However, the Fort Lauderdale Police Department says that no charges have yet been filed by Balboa.
