Hello there everyone and welcome to 411mania’s LIVE coverage of UFC on ESPN 34. I’m Robert Winfree and I’ll be your host for the duration. On the heels of UFC 273 the the UFC is back on ESPN with a card headlined by a very relevant welterweight rematch. Vicente Luque and Belal Muhammad met back in 2016 at UFC 205 when Luque became the only man to stop Muhammad, now both men are trying to take an important step closer to the welterweight title picture. Going down a little further we find top prospect Miguel Baeza trying to halt a two fight losing streak against Andre Fialho, and the surging Pat Sabatini looks to extend his winning ways against TJ Laramie. It’s not the deepest card on paper but there’s some potential hidden away if you don’t mind looking for it.

UFC on ESPN 34 comes to us from the UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. We’ve got Brendan Fitzgerald, Daniel Cormier, and Dominick Cruz. Nevada uses most of the newer rules but you still only need one hand on the mat to be considered downed. We do have the use of instant replay including the option to restart the fight after it’s used if that’s applicable to the situation. Lastly keep in mind that we’re in the smaller 25 diameter Octagon.

Heili Alateng has gone 2-1-1 in the UFC and he’s coming off of a draw with Gustavo Lopez, now he’s looking for his first win since 2019 which could get him back on track as a legitimate bantamweight prospect. Kevin Croom has gone 0-2 with 1 No Contest in the UFC, he’s looking for that all important first official win inside the Octagon. The odds are with Alateng at -180 while the +155 comeback on Croom is a tempting value bet.

Bantamweight Bout: Heili Alateng (14-8-2, 135.5) vs. Kevin Croom (21-14 1 NC, 136)

ROUND ONE: Croom is six inches taller with seven inches of reach advantage. They touch gloves to get us going. Croom probes with some front kicks early. Both men land punches in close, then Croom lands a body kick. Calf kick from Croom. Alateng lands a right hand then a left and Croom is hurt. Alateng keeps unloading with punches and Croom melts causing the ref to stop the fight.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Heili Alateng via TKO, punches, at :47 of Round 1

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Alateng for his work this evening. Mic time for Alateng, he’s happy with the result and thanks everyone who’s helped him out. He talks us through the finish and notes this felt like a day at the gym. Asked what he’d like next he says he’s ready any time then thanks his team and coaches again.

Here’s the finish. There’s a nice little level change fake that is usually used to set up the overhand right, here it works like a charm. The follow up from Alateng is really nice as well, compact accurate punches that never give Croom a chance to regain his bearings.

Istela Nunes dropped her UFC debut in October of last year, now she’s back in action and hoping a more active schedule will result in her first UFC win. Sam Hughes has gone 0-3 in the UFC and badly needs a win here as a four fight losing streak could easily end her time in the promotion. Nunes is the favorite at -220 to a +180 payout on Hughes.

Hughes lands a right hand when Nunes goes southpaw, she’s finally punishing the switch. Nunes lands an inside leg kick. We get another timeout for an eye poke to Hughes. Replay shows the poke and the ref takes a point from Nunes, he’d warned her constantly about the fingers since the first foul so I’m not opposed to it. After about 30 seconds we’re back to fighting and Hughes lands a left. They tie up and hit the fence. Some knees from Hughes then she gets a body lock takedown into full mount. Hughes lands punches as Nunes hip escapes to half guard. Some short punches from Hughes and she starts looking to pass. Hughes lands some short elbows as well. Hughes postures up and looks to flurry as the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-8 Hughes after the point deduction, 29-27 Hughes overall

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Sam Hughes via majority decision (28-28, 29-27 x2)

Mic time for Hughes after the win, she talks about all the changes she’s made over the last couple of years and she’s happy to see the payoff for all of her hard work. The fight played out like she expected and puts over Nunes as a tough opponent but the game plan prevailed.

Jordan Leavitt has gone 2-1 in the UFC and he’s coming off of a win, now he’s trying to get his first UFC winning streak up and running. Trey Ogden brings a three fight winning streak into his UFC debut and he’s looking to make the most of his only chance to make a first impression. The odds are close but lean towards Ogden at -140 against a +120 for Leavitt.

29-28 for either man is acceptable, the whole thing hinges on the second round for me and that was a very close round. No interview for Leavitt.

Chris Barnett has gone 1-1 in the UFC but he scored a memorable wheel kick knockout in his last fight and is trying to build his first UFC winning streak tonight. Martin Buday brings an eight fight winning streak into his UFC debut, now he looks to make a good first impression on the wider audience. Buday is a surprisingly heavy -260 favorite to a +210 payout for Barnett.

Heavyweight Bout: Chris Barnett (22-7, 263.5 lbs.) vs. Martin Buday (9-1, 264.5 lbs.)

Buday lands a knee to the body and Barnett crumples, Buday lands some punches but Barnett fights back to his feet. Some elbows from Buday now, but he lands one to the back of the head and Barnett drops and the ref pauses things. I wont blame Barnett one iota if he can’t continue with a busted rib and a foul on top of it. The doctor comes in to check on Barnett. Something about how Barnett looks makes the doctor uncomfortable and he calls it off. We’ll be going to a technical decision.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Buday, 30-27 Buday overall
