411 Box Office Report: Project Hail Mary Holds Well To Reign For Second Week

Project Hail Mary topped the box office for a second week with a very strong hold, while They Will Kill You had a quiet start. Hail Mary led the weekend with ease, bringing in $54.5 million. That is a second-weekend drop of just 32%, a great number considering how strongly it overperformed last weekend.
Hail Mary is now a bonafide blockbuster, with a total of $164.3 million domestically and $300.8 million worldwide. That makes it the top US-released film to date, as well as Amazon MGM’s top grosser as it moved past Creed III’s $276.1 million from March of 2023. The Ryan Gosling starrer still has a hefty budget to overcome at a reported $190 million, but it seems likely to do so and the domestic total is still on track for somewhere around $250 million.
Pixar’s Hoppers is continuing to hold well, as it dropped just 31% in its third weekend to bring in $12.2 million. The animated film is well positioned to be the sizable hit Pixar has needed for a while, as it stands at $138.6 million stateside and $297.6 million worldwide against a $150 million production budget. Hoppers is now looking to end up the animation studio’s highest-grossing original film since 2017’s Coco and should be able to land at around $165 million to $170 million, perhaps higher. Count in the foreign grosses and this will be a hit for the studio.
Our big new release of the week came in at #3 with They Will Kill You. Warner Bros. action-horror comedy about a woman going up in against a cult in a New York City high rise took in $5 million to start, slightly below the $6 million to $7 million that was expected coming into the frame.
It’s too early to call the Zazie Beets-starring flick a failure, though it’s a soft opening by any measure. The number is barely more than half what Ready Or Not 2: Here I Come opened to last weekend. And therein lies the problem: neither 20th Century Studios nor Warner Bros. wanted to budge on their release dates, despite the films being conceptually similar in some ways and catering to the same crowd. They Will Kill You staked out the spot first, but Ready or Not was an established franchise and was always going to do better than it. It seems very likely that the two films opening within a week of each other hurt both.
They Will Kill You earned decent enough reviews, but the 66% critic aggregate score is not enough to make it seem must-see. Audiences liked it okay but not overwhelmingly, with a 79% RT audience score and a B- CinemaScore. Compare those to Ready Or Not 2’s 73% critic score, 90% RT audience score and B+ CinemaScore, and it was clear which film had better buzz.
They Will Kill You isn’t in the worst shape, but it will need to wait until digital for its shot at profit. It added $4 million overseas for a $9 million start against a $20 million budget. This film will likely drift off a bit quickly and will finish off with around $15 million stateside.
Dhurandhar: The Revenge had a strong hold for a Bollywood film in a domestic market, down just 53% in its second week to $4.7 million. That’s very good for a very targeted genre that typically falls hard after its initial week. The film now has a massive (for a Bollywood film) $22.8 million domestically and $155.9 million worldwide against a $32 million budget that it shared with its first film, making this a very successful release for Moviegoers Entertainment.
Reminders Of Him was down a solid 41% in its third weekend. The romantic drama took in $4.7 million, bringing its totals to $41.1 million in the US and $69.5 million worldwide against a budget of just $25 million. It’s going to top fellow Colleen Hoover adaptation Regretting You’s $48.9 million domestic total, with a likely $52 million endgame or so. That will make it profitable for Universal Pictures.
Ready Or Not 2: Here I Come had an okay hold, down 56% from its opening weekend to take in $4 million. That’s much heavier than the first film’s 26% drop in August of 2019, but that’s also a very different release time and again, Here I Come had They Will Kill You peeling audience members away. The sequel is now at $16.3 million domestically and $24.4 million worldwide against a $14 million budget. With several big markets left to open, the film is likely to be a success and will probably finish with around $25 million in the US, about on par with the first film’s $28.7 million.
Scream 7 eased 40% to $2.6 million as it passed a new milestone for the venerable slasher franchise, becoming the first entry to pass $200 million worldwide. The horror film now has $118.7 million stateside and $204.1 million worldwide, hugely profitable against its $45 million budget. It is now looking likely to close at about $118 million; it hits digital this week.
GOAT held up well once again is it was down just 36% in its seventh frame to pull in another $2.2 million. The Sony Pictures Animation family film brought its totals to $100.9 million domestically and $180.9 million worldwide against an $80 million budget, making it a likely profitable endeavor that will finish around $110 million in the US.
Undertone followed last week’s drop with an easier third weekend, off 45% to $1.7 million. A24 has made its money off this one with ease; it has grossed $18.5 million domestically against a $500,000 budget. (Again, A24 paid in the single digit millions for it). $20 million remains its endgame
.
As it the market didn’t have enough of them competing against each other, we had one more horror comedy open this weekend in IFC Films’ Forbidden Fruits the teen witchy film started about where it was expected to with $1.1 million. That’s neither great nor awful for a reportedly inexpensive film that was always designed to find its money on home viewing & streaming like most of IFC’s films. Forbidden Fruits is liked well enough (a 78% RT critic score, 70% RT audience score) and will vanish from the box office quickly, but IFC will make their money.
We will have a new #1 next weekend as The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is targeting the best opening weekend of 2026 with ease, at around $125 million to 140 million for three days (it opens on Wednesday). A24’s The Drama should launch in the low double-digit range.
