97th Annual Oscar Nominations: Emilia Pérez, Wicked, The Brutalist Lead Way

The nominations for the 97th Annual Academy Awards are out with Emilia Pérez, Wicked, and The Brutalist topping the list. The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences announced the nominees for this year’s ceremony on Thursday morning, which saw the French-language musical take home the most nods with 13. It was followed by Wicked and The Brutalist (10 nominations each) as well as Conclave and A Complete Unknown (8 nods).
Those five films all earned Best Picture nominations alongside Sean Baker’s Anora, Dune: Part Two, Portuguese-language biographical drama I’m Still Here, historical drama Nickel Boys, and Coralie Fargeat’s satirical body horror film The Substance. Anora earned six nods while The Substance and Dune: Part Two earned five.
The biggest surprises came in the Best Actress race where Nicole Kidman (Babygirl) and Angelina Jolie (Maria) were left out in the cold. Instead the field includes four of five first-time nominees in expected nods for Mikey Madison (Anora), Demi Moore (The Substance) and Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez) and a minor surprise in Fernanda Torres for I’m Still Here. Cynthia Erivo is the sole previous nominee, earning a nod for her role in Wicked. She was previously nominated for Harriet in 2019.
Also snubbed were Selena Gomez, who was not nominated for Emilia Pérez although her co-star Zoe Saldana was and is a frontrunner for the win. Luca Guadagnino’s two acclaimed films from this year were left out in Challengers and Queer, neither of which scored any nods despite Daniel Craig earning awards buzz for the latter film and Challengers’ score taking home the Golden Globes win. And while Conclave earned a host of nominations, director Edward Berger was not nominated for the film and in a surprise, James Mangold earned a nod for A Complete Unknown.
Among the other relative surprises were Sebastian Stan earning a Best Actor nomination for The Apprentice and Monica Barbaro earning a Best Supporting Actress nomination for A Complete Unknown. And Better Man, despite being barely seen in the US, earned a Best Visual Effects nod.
You can see the full list below. Final voting for the Oscars begins on February 11nd, with the ceremony taking place on March 2nd on ABC and Hulu.
