The Scream franchise won’t need to moving forward without its intrepid reporter, as Courteney Cox is signed on for the fifth film. Spyglass Media Group and Paramount Pictures announced on Friday that Cox will reprise her role as Gale weathers in the upcoming Scream relaunch, joining David Arquette who will return as Dewey Riley. More casting updates have been promised to follow.

Production on the film will take place in Wilmington, North Carolina with Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of Radio Silence directing from a script by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett had a critical hit with last year’s Ready or Not. Kevin Williamson, who created the franchise, will executive produce along with Radio Silence’s Chad Villella. Project X Entertainment’s Vanderbilt, Paul Neinstein and William Sherak serving as producers.

That only leaves among the Scream originals Neve Campbell to be announced. Campbell is reportedly in talks to return as Sidney Prescott. No word on whether Hayden Panettiere may return as Kirby Reed from Scream 4; while her character was stabbed and left for dead in the film, there has been a lot of fan speculation that she could have survived the events of that film as no one saw her actually die.

Radio Silence said, “We can’t imagine Scream without the iconic Gale Weathers and are so incredibly thrilled and humbled to have the opportunity to work with Courteney. We’re absolute mega fans of her work and we’re so excited to join her in the next chapter of the Scream saga!”
