Disney Reportedly Developing X-Files Return With Ryan Coogler

Black Panther’s Ryan Coogler is reportedly producing a return of The X-Files with Disney. Bloomberg reports that Coogler is attached to produce a new version of the iconic 1990s FOX sci-fi series with Disney.

Details on the new version are scarce, though franchise creator Chris Carter said back in March that Coogler was going to “remount” a take on the series. Carter said at the time, “I just spoke to a young man…Ryan Coogler…who is going to remount The X-Files with a diverse cast. So he’s got his work cut out for him, because we covered so much territory.”

Coogler has experience reviving franchises; he wrote and directed Creed, which spun the Rocky franchise in a new direction. He also served as executive producer on Creed II and co-developed the story for Creed III.

The X-Files last aired back in 2018 with a 10-episode eleventh season that followed in the steps of the tenth season two years earlier, itself a revival of the original franchise. It’s not clear if the new series would start afresh or be set in the universe of the previous show and films.
