Godzilla Is Back in First Look at Apple TV+’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters
Apple TV+ today revealed the first-look and announced the title and cast of the upcoming live-action original series, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Based on Legendary’s Monsterverse franchise, the new series stars Kurt Russell, Wyatt Russell, Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Mari Yamamoto, Anders Holm, Joe Tippett, and Elisa Lasowski. Of course, the show will also feature the return of the Legendary version of the King of the Monsters, Godzilla.
The new series is set after the events of the 2014 Godzilla film after the climactic battle between Godzilla and the MUTOs that took place in San Francisco, the public is now aware that giant monsters are real. The series follows two siblings who are following in their father’s footsteps to uncover their family’s connection to the organization called Monarch.
Their clues lead them into the world of monsters and down a rabbit hole to Army officer Lee Shaw (Kurt Russell and son Wyatt Russell portraying the same character in different time periods), with the show being set in both the 1950s and half a century later when Monarch is threatened by what Shaw knows. The saga will span three generations, revealing buried secrets and how earth-shattering events can reverberate throughout our lives.
The series is co-developed by Chris Black (Severance, Outcast) and Matt Fraction (Hawkeye). WandaVision director Matt Shakman directs the first two episodes. Black and Fraction are executive producing the show alongside Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell. Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita are executive producing the series on behalf of Toho Co., Ltd., the owner of the Godzilla character and franchise.
The series will stream globally on Apple TV+ later on. The show does not et have an official release date.
