Godzilla vs. Kong is off to a good day at the box office, setting a record for the pandemic in its opening day. The MonsterVerse movie grossed $9.6 million domestically on its opening day on Thursday, the highest first day since the pandemic forced the theater industry to shut down in March of 2020. The previous record was Wonder Woman 1984, which had a first day of $7.5 million on Christmas Day. Like that film, Godzilla vs. Kong opened day and date in theaters and on HBO Max.

The Warner Bros. action film opened in 2,409 theaters on Wednesday, and will expand to 3,064 as of tomorrow. The film is currently riding high critically with a 79% current consensus positive on aggragate site Rotten Tomatoes. Fan reaction has also been very positive with an A CinemaScore, better than the traditional MonsterVerse CinemaScore of a B+.

The film is expected to gross between $20 million to $30 million over the weekend domestically, and has already grossed $121.9 million overseas for a $131.5 million worldwide gross thus far. You can see our own Jeffrey Harris’ review of the film here.
