Warner Bros.’ big reveal that its 2021 film slate is arriving in theaters and on HBO Max has Legendary, the company behind Godzilla vs. Kong and Dune, upset. As reported last week, the studio made the unprecedented announcement that its full film schedule for the year will be day-and-date on theaters and on the service, and Deadline has revealed that Legendary was upset that its expensive films are being included in that.

You may recall that a little over a week ago, it was reported that Legendary had been offered over $200 million to put Godzilla vs. Kong on that service, but that Warner Bros. shot that deal down. Legendary financed 75% of the two films’ spendy budgets and were reportedly had no advance notice about Warner Bros.’ announcement. The site reports that Legendary either has or will send legal letters to Warner Bros. challenging the decision to put Dune and possibly Godzilla vs Kong on the service.

The site adds that “no one is happy” about the Warner Bros. deal in terms of people who are involved in the distribution processes such as the production studios, theater chains and the like. While they understand Warner Bros. is in a tough position right now, they look to the idea that a vaccine for COVID-19 is coming. Of course, that vaccine may take a good while to distribute and moviegoers may still be hesitant to go to theaters for a while.

egendary had no comment on the reports of their disatisfaction with the matter. Godzilla vs. Kong is set for release on May 21st, with Dune set to arrive on October 1st.
