Harley Quinn will be Joker-less in the upcoming Birds of Prey, and Margot Robbie discussed where that puts Harley emotionally in the film. Robbie spoke with Empire about Harley’s mindset in the film following her split with Mister J and how the character is still feeling vulnerable in the wake of the breakup.

“She’s trying to own it,” Robbie said in the interview. “That felt like a real way to deal with a break-up. It’s not clean and easy to be a strong woman. It’s so hard. She’s a bit more Courtney Love than Debbie Harry this time. She says, ‘I’m single, I don’t need him, f**k that guy.’ But if the Joker were to text her, ‘You up?’ she’d run. She’d fall to pieces.”

Robbie also spoke with Total Film about being able to forge a new direction with the character, which she debuted as in Suicide Squad. “Once I started getting to know her, and prepping for [Suicide Squad], I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, there is so much more to be done with this character,'” the actress said. “Obviously, you can only do so much in a film like Suicide Squad where there are so many other characters, and you’ve got to be introduced to everyone, and you’ve got a huge plot thing to contend with. So I was just like, ‘There is so much more to do with her.'”

Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) also stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain, and Ewan McGregor as Black Mask. The film centers on Harley, Huntress, and Canary teaming up in order to protect Cassandra Cain when she comes across a diamond belonging to Black Mask. It’s set for release on Febuary 7th, 2020.
