Viewer beware, you’re in for a scare…again. Variety reports that Disney+ has given a 10-episode order to a brand new live-action Goosebumps TV series. The news of a new series first broke in April 2020.
Unlike the beloved 90s show, this series appears to not be an episodic anthology. Instead it will be one continuous story. According to the synopsis, the series “follows a group of five high schoolers who unleash supernatural forces upon their town and must all work together – thanks to and in spite of their friendships, rivalries, and pasts with each other – in order to save it, learning much about their own parents’ teenage secrets in the process.”
It will be written and executive produced by Nick Stoller (via Stoller Global Solutions) and Rob Letterman. Letterman will also direct the first episode. Other executive producers include Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty of Original Film, Conor Welch of Stoller Global Solutions, and Iole Lucchese and Caitlin Friedman of Scholastic Entertainment. Sony Pictures Television Studios will produce. Moritz previously produced the two Goosebumps feature films in 2015 and 2018, which earned a combined $250 million. Letterman directed the first film.
Goosebumps written by R.L. Stine, is one of the best-selling book series of all time. There are over 400 million English-language copies in print, plus international versions in 32 languages. There are now over 200 books total, including the main series and spinoffs. The series was originally adapted in the 90s for FOX Kids, with 74 episodes running between 1995 and 1998.
Disney+ previously worked with R.L. Stine by adapting his Just Beyond graphic novels, which debuted with eight episodes back in October 2021.
