Golden Globes Winners

The 77th annual Golden Globes saw Once Upon a Time in Hollywood come out the big winner, while 1917, Chernobyl, and Joker had big victories as well. Quentin Tarantino’s ninth film took home the most awards of the night with three, claiming wins for Best Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical), Best Supporting Actor (Brad Pitt), and Best Screenplay. Once Upon a Time topped out a competitive field in its Best Motion Picture category that included Dolemite Is My Name, Jojo Rabbit, Knives Out, and Rocketman.

Among dramas, 1917 took home the big wins for Best Motion Picture (Drama) and Best Director for Sam Mendes. The film, which goes wide this coming weekend, gets a real boost among oddsmakers for the Oscars at this point. The Best Actor awards went to Joaquin Phoenix for Joker — which also won Best Original Score — and Taron Egerton for Rocketman. Rocketman also won Best Original Song for its subjects Elton John and Bernie Taupin’s “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again.”

The biggest news though among the film categories were what didn’t win. The Irishman found itself shut out despite having five nominations, while Netflix’s Marriage Story only won one award, for Laura Dern. That film led the pack of nominees with six. The films will still almost certainly earn a host of Oscar nominations, but their lack of wins here is notable (even with the Globes being known for their divergence with the Oscars over the years).

The television categories were dominated by the winners from the Emmys, with Chernobyl and Fleabag picking up two wins each. Succession won Best Drama Series in the key change from the Emmys; Game of Thrones, which won the Emmy, wasn’t nominated.
