Paramount Pictures Announces GI Joe/Transformers Movie Crossover at CinemaCon
It looks like the crossover teased at the end of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will finally come to fruition. During Thursday’s (April 11) studio presentation for Paramount Pictures, company president and CEO Brian Robbins announced an ambitious slate of planned features, including a planned new installment that will bring the fan-favorite franchises of GI Joe and Transformers together on the big screen for the first time. 411Mania was on hand for Thursday’s presentation.
No story details are available for the project yet, other than that this will be a crossover movie for the two iconic Hasbro toy franchises. G.I. Joe has not been on the big screen since Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, released in July 2021. The film was a box office flop, making only $40 million worldwide. The last live-action Transformers movie was Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, which made $438 million worldwide and $157 million domestically. A new animated feature based on the franchise, Transformers One, is due to arrive in theaters on September 13. Paramount released two other live-action GI Joe movies: The Rise of Cobra in 2009 and The Rise of Cobra in 2013.
A mid-credits scene in Rise of the Beasts teased the appearance of G.I. Joe, who are now aware of the Autobots and Maximals’ existence. It’s unknown if the plan is to continue off of the thread teased by that film and continue on in the 1990s era or bring the film into more contemporary times. The upcoming feature will will be produced by Transformers franchise veterans Steven Spielberg, Michael Bay, Mark Vahradian, Tom DeSanto, and Don Murphy.
The characters of both franchises have crossed over multiple times before in comic book form, most recently in Skybound Entertainment’s Energon Universe of comics. A Season 3 episode of the classic 1980s G1 animated series, The Transformers, also featured an appearance by a character named Old Snake, who was all but said to be the same Cobra Commander from the neighboring Sunbow GI Joe 1980s animated series.
The crossover feature is not yet titled, the film has an expected release window of 2025-2026.
