Rick Grimes’ first spinoff Walking Dead feature film will take some unexpected swerves, according to Scott Gimple. Gimple, who oversees the whole of the zombie universe franchise for AMC, spoke with EW for a new interview and discussed the upcoming film, which will follow Andrew Lincoln’s character after he was taken away by helicopters in his final episode of the series in November of 2018.

Gimple said that the film will be quite different from the series, noting, “The scale is bigger and the budget is bigger, and it’s The Walking Dead, but heightened, both in the narrative themes, but also in just what we see onscreen. I say heightened, but I should also say it’s also very different. It’s not going to be the exact same thing we saw on television, just larger. We are going in some wild new directions.”

He added, “We really want to deliver [the fans] something special, something worth their trip to the movies. We’re trying to be very deliberate and deliver something new.”

Gimple noted that the script is still being tweaked and that as of now, no director is in place. The film will be released in theaters, though a release date isn’t yet set.
