Satanic Temple Settles Lawsuit With Netflix Over Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
The Satanic Temple has settled their lawsuit against Netflix over the use of a Baphomet statue in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. THR reports that the Temple announced their lawsuit against the streaming service has been dropped, noting that it has been “amicably settled.” Warner Bros. TV, who was also part of the lawsuit, confirmed the case has been settled.
The lawsuit was filed by the Massachusetts-based religious and political activist group (a separate group from the Anton LaVey-associated Church of Satan) after Netflix used the Baophoment statue in the show’s lobby of The School for Unseen Arts. While Baphomet is an ancient figure who first was mentioned as far back as the fourteenth century (and was associated with their anthropomorphic goat image since the nineteenth century), STS had a copyright on a monument that looked nearly identical to the one used in Sabrina. Monuments and other works of art are subject to copyright laws when applicable.
“The Satanic Temple is pleased to announce that the lawsuit it recently filed against Warner Bros. and Netflix has been amicably settled,” Satanic Temple attorney Stuart de Haan told the site. “The unique elements of the Satanic Temple’s Baphomet statue will be acknowledged in the credits of episodes which have already been filmed. The remaining terms of the settlement are subject to a confidentiality agreement.”
TST had sought $50 million in the lawsuit over their copyright infringement. As for Sabrina, she will return in a holiday special on Netflix next month.
