When Steve Rogers passed on the shield at the end of Avengers: Endgame, it went to Sam Wilson. And Bucky himself thinks that was the better call than he would have been. Sebastian Stan spoke with Yahoo! Movies in an interview with Anthony Mackie (Sam) and talked about why he thinks Bucky Barnes wouldn’t have been the right choice to become the new Captain America.

“I don’t know about that,” Stand said when the interview suggested it could have gone to either of them. “Actually not really, if you think about it. It makes no sense for him to — why would you give it to the guy that’s been like, trying to have a whole new history outside of the thing he’s been trapped by? You know? I mean, I remember I found out the day we were shooting, I was like, ‘Oh, this is the scene we’re having. Like, this is the deal.’ But it makes sense. He’s [Sam] actually been his right-hand for a long time at this point, if you think about the movies and the time.”

Mackie added, “And, we’re only one movie away from him trying to kill everyone,” referencing Captain America: Civil War.” It was technically two movies when you consider both Infinity War and Endgame, but it’s all one story and since the actors shot the films back-to-back, it’s an understandable point.

We’ll be seeing Sam and Bucky together again in Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which will arrive on Disney+ in August of 2020, with connections to the larger MCU.
