Tom Cruise & Paramount Considering Days of Thunder Sequel
Tom Cruise and Paramount Pictures are eyeing a sequel to the 1990 racing film Days Of Thunder. THR reports that Cruise is speaking with Paramount about a follow-up to the film, with an insider at the studio noting that the two are talking about both Top Gun and Days Of Thunder and that it “depends on the idea and, ultimately, the script.”
The Top Gun threequel had already been reported in January and was largely expected considering the blockbuster success of Top Gun: Maverick. Days of Thunder, on the other hand, was not a major hit and received middling responses from critics. The report notes that Cruise believes he can give Thunder the Top Gun treatment in terms of a successful follow-up. He previously shot down the notion of a reboot of the film as a TV series for Paramount+.
The original film was directed by Tony Scott and starred Cruise as Cole Trickle, a young race car driver brought into the world of NASCAR. The film was successful with $157.9 million against a $60 million budget but was considered a disappointment against the success of Top Gun.
The report notes that the studio is out to potential writers and whether the film moves forward depends on the script and Cruise’s schedule. Cruise has been a reliably bankable star for Paramount between Top Gun: Maverick and the Mission: Impossible films.
