Trolls World Tour Nears $100 Million In Digital Rental Fees
With theaters closed, Universal Pictures took a bit of a risk by releasing Trolls World Tour on video on demand, and based on a story in the Wall Street Journal, that decision looks to be paying off as they’ve announced that the film is closing in on 5 million rentals since April 10th, good for around $100 million in digital rental fees.
Universal says that Trolls World Tour already sits at $77 million in revenue, not bad for a movie that had a $90 million budget and hasn’t even been released in theaters yet. The film is also generating additional revenue from music sales related to the film’s popular soundtrack, as well as merchandise. By comparison, the 2016 Trolls film had a $125 million budget and went on to earn $153.7 million domestically and $346.9 million globally.
Studios are taking notice of the success of Trolls World Tour and Onward on VOD, as Warner Bros. is set to release their animated film, Scoob, on VOD as well.
