411’s Buy or Sell 01.21.11: El Generico Heads to CHIKARA, The Briscoes Aim for Singles Gold, ROH Finishes with HDNet Tapings, and More!!!

January 21, 2011 | Posted by Michael Bauer

Welcome everyone to Week 190 of BUY or SELL. For those of you who haven’t been with us since the beginning, here’s the Reader’s Digest version of what this column is all about. BUY or SELL is very much like 411’s long-running Fact or Fiction column. The main difference is that BUY or SELL focuses on topics like the U.S. Independent scene, Lucha Libre, Japanese Wrestling and pretty much anything else that isn’t mainstream wrestling, WWE and or TNA. This allows for these areas to get a bit more press and for you, our loyal readers, to learn even more about the sport of professional wrestling.

Questions are sent out on Tuesday Night.

  • The joining of Naruki Doi’s stable with Warriors in Dragon Gate will dissolve before the end of 2011.

Michael Ornelas: BUY. DGUSA is probably the promotion I keep up with the least. I watch the matches on all their shows, but don’t really pay attention to the alignments of wrestlers there. However, I know professional wrestling, and it seems pretty safe to say that when two stables conjoin into one, it will not be there with all the same members in a year’s time. There is just too much room for conflict. It may not completely dissolve before the end of 2011, but it won’t be the same. I feel like I can say that with confidence.

Kevin Ford : SELL. This seems too big to dissolve altogether. Certainly the line-up of the Blood Warriors will change, but rarely does a Dragon Gate faction go six months without some change to it. Dissolve? No, the Blood Warriors will still be around by the end of 2011. Change? Absolutely.

  • CHIKARA needs to have more appearances by non-regular wrestlers such as Madison Eagles and El Generico to remain successful.

Kevin Ford : BUY. Ready for a confusing answer? CHIKARA has enough non-regulars as it is. In fact, from King of Trios to the end of the year, all but one show had at least one non-regular on the card. The quality ranged from excellent (Bryan Danielson, the Dragon Gate guys, Manami Toyota) to subpar (Homicide, Tommy Dreamer) to atrocious (Dragon Yuki, some of the Young Lions Cup guys, etc.). My answer to the question is based more in the QUALITY of the wrestler CHIKARA brings in. They have enough guests, but they need to consistently bring in guests of excellent quality.

Michael Ornelas: SELL. I don’t know about the need in order to remain successful, but I know it makes me more eager to watch the show. Generico is a great fit for CHIKARA and would love to see him become a semi-regular. But what’s a Madison Eagles? (Heh, not really, but it was one of my favorite WOTW comments ever from when she won the SHIMMER championship) I’m not familiar with Madison Eagles as I don’t have the time to follow SHIMMER on top of everything else I watch, but I’ve heard pretty good things. Usually CHIKARA is pretty good at bringing in outsiders for their King of Trios and Young Lion’s Cup tournaments. They also had Manami Toyota last year, so they’re doing well with this as is. But there are so many more Indy talents to tap into. Supposedly Roderick Strong has never even seen a CHIKARA show. I’m surprised and think he could be a good attraction to bring in to battle the BDK (or as a member of it). Chris Hero could go back since he’s a King of Wrestling with Claudio and has even held the Campeonatos de Parejas. There are so many people that CHIKARA could reach out to, but I don’t know if they NEED them. It’s a great product on its own.

  • The Bruderschaft will rebound from the Season Nine finale and not lose a match this weekend.

Michael Ornelas: SELL. I’m not going to say what match I think they’ll lose because that doesn’t really matter. I just don’t see a clean sweep because cracks have been shown in the Bruderschaft, and I could see them getting rid of a member or two and adding some people to freshen it up. I can’t say I know where they’re going with the storyline, but simply waiting a few weeks between matches isn’t going to all of the sudden strengthen the group’s weaknesses. Having said that, it’s still a great storyline and I wouldn’t be surprised if it doesn’t wrap up for quite some time still. Regardless of the wins or losses this weekend, all I ask for is some good wrestling and/or some good stories.

Kevin Ford : SELL. I just don’t see it. Daizee beating Madison Eagles will surely happen. They other two matches are tough calls, but I don’t see both the Soul Touchaz and Quack/Jig/Colony losing, especially after Quack’s recent blog on the CHIKARA website regarding busting out another secret submission (CHIKARA Special Beta anyone?) Maybe they will, and I wouldn’t be surprised, but I think the BDK goes 2 and 1 this weekend.

  • The Cutler Brothers would be a solid overall addition to Ring of Honor’s Tag Team Division.

Kevin Ford : BUY . These guys are awesome, no doubt about it. If they were to come into ROH, they would have almost one hundred percent fresh match-ups. Cutlers vs Kings of Wrestling, Cutlers vs Cole & O’Reilly, and Cutlers vs. The All Night Express are all matches I’d love to see. I think the Cutlers would be great for the tag division.

Michael Ornelas: BUY. There are better options out there. I’d love it if Paul London returned to Ring of Honor and wrestled as Peligro Abejas there with El Generico. The Osirian Portal would be a fun addition to the roster as well. But the Cutlers have improved greatly in the past year and I think they’re ready. They probably wouldn’t come in very strong and would have to pay their dues, but they could put on some good matches with Cole & O’Reilly, the ANX, and maybe the Briscoes. They wouldn’t be ready to face the Kings or the WGTT, but we’ll see. I’d debut them against the Bravados to establish dominance and go from there.

    2 for 4.

  • Neither Mark or Jay Briscoe will ever hold a singles title in Ring of Honor.

Michael Ornelas: SELL. But it depends. If they keep the TV title after they go off TV, then there’s a chance, but I don’t see either man holding the World championship because in all honesty, the World championship scene looks booked through 2012 (I think Richards, Daniels, and Edwards will all have a chance with the belt, with an outside chance of a few other main eventers and leaving room for some other breakout stars). Unless one of the Briscoes all of a sudden stops wrestling, I don’t see it happening because I wouldn’t be surprised if they get picked up by WWE or TNA by the end of 2012.

Kevin Ford : BUY. I don’t see the point. I am far more interested in these guys as a team. No offense to either guy, but I see them as a package deal as opposed to two singles guys forming a team. There best performances are as a team and I much prefer they stay that way. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind them wrestling in singles matches, but at the end of the die I want them to stay a unit. A singles title would distance them from one another.

    2 for 5.

  • The final match(es) on HDNet for Ring of Honor should involve the RoH World or World Tag Titles being defended, not the scheduled six man tag match.

Kevin Ford : SELL. It just doesn’t seem appropriate. No one would believably expect a title change on the final episode of TV, so why do it? I think the draw for ROH television has always been quality matches as opposed to title matches. I think going out with an excellent match as opposed to a big title bout is the right way to go.

Michael Ornelas: BUY. Not only that, but I think it should involve a title CHANGE. When I saw the news bit, I totally expected to click and find it to say “Roderick Strong vs. Davey Richards II for the RoH World championship. I’m not saying the match they chose will disappoint, but it doesn’t exactly have a big feel to it. It should have been Roderick defending against Richards, Edwards, or even El Generico. (Richards should have been the only title change though, if there was to be one). The main thing that hurts this is that it tapes before, but airs after the 9th Anniversary Show iPPV, so they can’t have any championships change hands. If circumstances were slightly different, I wouldn’t be surprised if they went ahead and did that. What we got was good, but I’m a little disappointed that there won’t be any World or Tag Team championship title changes in RoH on HDNet history.
