-Peacock exclusive time as they are still in the WWE business, but just on a smaller scale. In the past they have released documentaries on WrestleMania IX, Bray Wyatt, Ric Flair, Kurt Angle, and Cody Rhodes. This time Shawn Michaels gets the treatment. I apologize this wasn’t done yesterday, but I thought this was being released next week just before the Hogan Netflix series.

-We start at an NXT show in Orlando and Shawn is in the epicenter where all the monitors are. He says this is the calm before the storm. He tells us he slams down suckers because they are full of sugar to kill time. He tells us NXT is all about feedback and coaching talent. They want to get these guys and girls ready for the main roster.

-Show opening to tease what is to come with this documentary. Anything I reviewed that is focused on, I will try to make sure I link a review if I have it. Nash: “I don’t think there is any difference between him and Jordan.” Bret: “He was an asshole. A first rate asshole.” That’s our Bret! Taker: “I’m not going to sugarcoat anything. I wouldn’t have pissed on Shawn Michaels if he was on fire.” That’s great! Let’s go!

-July 8, 2025: WWE Performance Center: It has evolved but always been a developmental system for WWE. We are at a NXT Taping as HHH says the idea was to find a better system to train talent. We meet Malissa Lappas who is the senior manager of talent development operations. She only knew Shawn as a friend of Hunter. She didn’t even let him in the building the first time she saw him. She was new and working the desk and asked Matt Bloom who this guy was. Bloom: “We can let him in.”

-We see Shawn working with the kids and teaching them psychology and dealing with all the personalities in a one on one basis. HHH says Shawn is like him and is the best candidate for the job as he can understand the talent on every level. Johnny Russo, NXT VP and Lead Writer, up next to talk about how Shawn can speak to the kids on a human level. Joe Hendry says Shawn has time for everyone and is accessible. He calls Shawn the greatest of all time. Bloom says when people tell Shawn they will do what they can to be the best, they need to realize who they are saying this to.

-Shawn goes back to when he saw wrestling for the first time at age twelve. He was an athlete and the only thing he thought about doing besides being a wrestler was a stuntman. He soon learned they were pretty similar.

-We have video of Shawn’s debut for Mid-South in December of 1984. Terry Taylor talks about people being green and inexperienced, but Shawn looked comfortable and relaxed like he had been doing it for a long time. Hearing a young JR call Shawn’s matches in Mid-South is pretty surreal.

-We jump to AWA where Shawn is paired with Marty Jannetty and they clicked instantly. They hit as a team and Shawn was hopeful it would lead to bigger things.

-We jump to June 18, 1988 where The Rockers make their WWF TV debut. Bret says he was excited as they needed new, fresh teams. We see highlights of Rockers/Hart Foundation matches. Bruce Prichard is always in these and talks about The Rockers and how they were for a new fan. Taker calls them a white meat babyface team.

-Dec 16, 1991: Shawn has a match against Ric Flair. Flair is here and says Shawn was full of himself and he knew he was good. Bret notes The Rockers were good, but Shawn always wanted to have his own career. Shawn says he doesn’t know of anyone who gets into the business to just be a tag guy. Vince called him and told him there was a chance for a single’s run.

-That leads to The Barbershop and it’s still glorious to watch! Shawn superkicks Marty as Heenan knew he was going to do it and then he throws Marty throw the plate glass window. That was so hardcore for the time and has been etched in the memories of everyone watching. Rosenberg calls it the greatest tag team split of all time. The horrified faces of the women in the crowd as Marty is bleeding is great. Sadly, they leave out Heenan calling Marty out for being a coward and trying to escape through the window.

-July 15, 2025: Shawn is at The PC again and we meet Andrea Concepcion, a writer and producer for NXT. She grew up a huge fan and was nervous her first day. She calls Shawn a GOAT and how he can see creative things they don’t. He asks Vic Joseph if the talent go to him and explain their stories. Vic notes they often go to the talent and you can tell that annoyed Shawn a bit. He talks about storytelling and how that is more important than the physical aspects.

-We go back to Jan of 92 and Bret says Shawn had been waiting for the chance to step out on his own. Shawn says he was told by Piper to never stop being who he was. We get video from his Mania VIII win over Tito and from SummerSlam 92 against Martel. We see the promo where he calls himself the Heartbreak Kid for the first time and they ran with it.

-Bret says Shawn was a great performer and didn’t need anyone’s advice on how to be a star. HHH isn’t sure how the long hair, earrings, and zebra stripes worked. Nash references The Kentucky Waterfall Mullet and says it is one of the greatest mullets of all time. I love when they can bust on each other.

-Sexy Boy: Of course Jimmy Hart is here to talk about the theme sing. It is a BANGER! He talks about recording the song and puts over how it has over 24 million streams on Spotify.

-Shawn continues to rise up the card and wins The IC Title from Bulldog on Saturday Night’s Main Event. Taker says you could tell how driven Shawn was and how he was going to show the world how good he was. We get video from the Mania IX documentary and the match with Tatanka. Shawn felt he had to be different and entertaining on another level.

-Kevin Nash gets brought in as Shawn’s bodyguard and they are together for the next three years or so. Razor Ramon is also around and soon Sean Waltman joins the group. HHH joins last and The Kliq is born. Hall says the group was about them all succeeding together. They would work against each other and talk wrestling all the time trying to get better.

-Shawn notes they were friends and would also feed each other’s demons. Shawn says he lived a conservative life growing up and that changed when he was on his own. Bruce says the group lived the rock n roll live when they could, but they would steal the show in the ring. HHH says the business was changing and Shawn was IT. Nash calls Shawn a perfectionist as we get up to WrestleMania XI. Bruce says Vince always saw Shawn as a heel until the Mania XI match where Shawn was cheered and Diesel was booed. Yeah, Shawn was kind of a dick there and stole the show away from his best friend. I mean, cutthroat business and do what you have to do.

-Shawn is now the top pushed face in the company and we get to Mania XII against Bret for the WWF Title. Bruce says this is not a team sport and you need to push the guy who will draw the most money. They wanted Shawn to be the face of the company and the pressure was going to be on him.

-July 30, 2025: Bloom says nothing gives him more job that busting Shawn’s balls. We see Shawn at a photo shoot and filming promo videos. He is wearing a suit up top, but shorts on the bottom.

-Back to March of 1996 as Shawn films vignettes in San Antonio to hype the match with Bret. We get to Mania XII with Shawn making his famous zip-line entrance. Rosenberg says that entrance was enough to tell you that this was the guy the WWF wanted. Bret says Shawn was in incredible condition and Bruce says the match was a classic. It was very good match, but I wouldn’t call it a great Iron Man Match. Going 0-0 for an hour defeats the psychology around an Iron Man Match. HHH/Rock or Rude/Steamboat are perfect examples.

-Shawn gets the win and is WWF Champion. Shawn says he didn’t have the ability to enjoy it. He mentions Earl struggling to put the belt on him, so he pushed him away. Shawn says he did not have a good attitude and was a gloomy gus. Taker talks about the pressures of being World Champion including all the media, personal appearances, signings, etc.

-Shawn says he goes back to “be careful what you wish for.” He felt a lot of pressure and did not handle it well. We see him on Baywatch and doing various talk shows. He admits he did not embrace the moments and enjoy them. He knows he could have handled things better.

-Bret brings up the story where Shawn told him he wanted to be Champion and work with Hall and Nash and his friends. Not saying it didn’t happen, but by the time he was Champion, Hall and Nash were on their way out. Shawn probably had those plans, but money talks.

-Bruce talks about WCW and how they aggressively came after their talent: like Hogan and Savage. Remember, Vince didn’t do that and just offered opportunities. Hall says he was talking to WCW as he felt he hit a glass ceiling in WWF. Nash also left and Shawn was pissed at both of them for leaving. HHH says Shawn was bitter and wanted his friends to stay. Shawn says it took his comfort level away and it was a scary time for him.

-HHH says business was okay but not great. Bret is a little more blunt: “Shawn took the title and ratings dropped. WCW Nitro started beating RAW.” Shawn was not happy as everyone was looking at him and blaming him because he was the champion. Shawn says it sucked to hear that and he took it personally.

-Aug. 4, 2025: Shawn talks about wrestling getting to you and how he doesn’t see that as a weakness. Ethan Page and Je’Von Evans talk about how Shawn will always listen to them if they have any issues. Shawn will always be an outlet because he cares.

-We are up to early 1997 now and Shawn is starting to fall apart and collapse under the pressure. Bruce thinks Shawn lashed out and Taker calls him abrasive. “I don’t care about what’s going on in your life. It doesn’t give you the right to abuse people.” We get the Taker and Bret quotes from the top of the show. Bret thinks it was due to Shawn’s drug problems. Shawn admits it was pills, blow, and marijuana. It started out fun and became something more serious. He had a point where he didn’t care if he lived past 35.

-He says being liked is way better than being hated and people hated him. He was running away and trying to escape from the dude he became. Shawn says he was a functional drug addict. He says he was always well on TV, but it was a different story outside those 20 minutes. HHH says those 20 minutes in the ring were the moment were Shawn existed. He would kill it and then as soon it was done, go back to the drugs. Shawn knew the stuff he was doing was wrong but he didn’t care. He didn’t see it spiraling out of control like it did.

-He tore his ACL for the first time and then it meant you were out for a year. I remember that being the case for football players and then Jerry Rice blew that out of the water. Now it seems the Achilles tear is the one athletes are terrified of. Shawn loses his smile and surrenders the WWF Title because he honestly believed his career might be finished.

-Dec. 17, 2024: NXT has a show in the building where Shawn lost his smile. NXT has Ethan Page shoot an angle where he lost his smile, but then decks Je’Von Evans. The spot was for Ethan to Pillmanize Je’Von’s head. Ethan was nervous, so Shawn took the move and Ethan is stunned. Shawn: “If they can do that with me, they can do it with each other.” Shawn even quotes Vince’s long term belief of never asking talent to do something you wouldn’t do.

-Back to 1997 as Shawn says nobody told him at first that you didn’t need an ACL. That is when he went to Dr. Andrews in Birmingham. He was told he could rehab and put a brace on it. HHH says business was bad as they were getting killed by WCW and the nWo. They knew they had to do something different. Shawn becomes a polarizing figure and says he poked the bear at every opportunity because he thought it would help.

-Bruce says Shawn being a jerk was easier to portray because that’s who he was at the time. That leads to DX and Shawn says they had a good idea where the business was going and needed to go. Crotch Chops and Suck Its for everyone! Strip Poker! Shawn showing his ass off all the time. Taker says it was fun and cool and the ratings were getting better. Well, not yet but we are getting there.

-Bret: “Can’t say I liked it.” No kidding! He says there was real tension between the two of them. Again, no kidding. Bret says Shawn crossed the line that nobody should every cross but we don’t hear the infamous Sunny Days line. Instead it’s a softer line about Bret not being a role model on the road.

Survivor Series 97: Bruce tells his own version and of course it’s one where everyone should be happy because it was Bret’s last day (it wasn’t really) and he was going to drop the title. Bret wasn’t doing that. HHH talks about how Bret couldn’t take the WWF Title with him to WCW (he wouldn’t anyway as WCW was scared after the Alundra Blayze ordeal). Bret says he was determined not to lose to Shawn no matter what they did in the ring.

-We get the infamous screw job and Bret says he could hear Vince yelling at the timekeeper. HHH calls it high level espionage and not an easy thing. Their understanding was there was no other option. Bret calls out Shawn’s bad acting job of pretending not to know. Shawn says he was always the bad guy and on that night he made it even worse. He just had to pick himself up and move forward.

-We jump to The Royal Rumble and the casket match with Taker. Shawn takes an innocent enough bump on the casket and it didn’t seem like anything at the time, but he WRECKED his back. Bruce says the injury was career ending, but Shawn really wanted to be there at Mania. He knew that was going to be his last match and it sent him off the rails with the prescription pills. He was sober for the two hours on TV, but a mess the rest of the time. He was throwing a pity party for himself. Shawn says it should have killed him, but he credits HHH for taking care of him and keeping him as responsible as he could.

WrestleMania XIV: Shawn says he was checked out and for the first time he didn’t care about his performance and just wanted to get through it. He can look back and see he was a tough son of a gun, but in his mind his life and career were over. That match is better than both think, but it wasn’t the all time classic they could and should have delivered.

-Aug. 22, 2025: Shawn meets up with Ilja as he is working to come back from injury. He gives Ilja some advice and calls him an animal all the time. He feels sorry for the guys when Ilja gets back and gets going.

-Back to 97 as Shawn has neck fusion surgery. All they knew was people don’t get back in the ring following this type of surgery. He needed something to do and put his name on a wrestling school. He also too a job doing high school football spots on the local news in San Antonio and we have footage. Fantastic! He was still doing drugs and screwed up that gig because he didn’t have a love or passion for it.

-Nitro: June 29, 1998: Whisper, one of the Nitro girls, does a solo dance and Shawn is watching at home. She is the most beautiful woman he has ever seen and finds a way to call her. They talk for three hours on the phone each night for two weeks. They meet in Jan and are married by the end of March. She is a beautiful woman!

-Shawn talks about the drug use and how she didn’t do them, but could have fun with Shawn. She soon realized he did the drugs all the time and eight weeks after the marriage she is pregnant. His son is born the next year and she is trapped with a dude that is on drugs all the time. Shawn says he was full of love and joy, but couldn’t get his act together. Nash told him to get things together because he didn’t want his friend to die.

-His son, at two, saying daddy is always tired was the wake up call Shawn needed. He had to get to a raw place with himself and through his wife became a born again Christian. Terry Taylor says Shawn was saved a few months before him. HHH would tell people that Shawn found religion and people would laugh. HHH: “I never knew anyone that died from an OD on religion.” For HHH as long as Shawn was off drugs he doesn’t care how he did it.

-Shawn takes us to church a bit as he quotes scripture and how it made him feel invincible. Shawn had the idea of doing one match so his son could see him. He wanted HHH as his opponent because he trusted him to get him through the match if he couldn’t do it.

-SummerSlam 2002: HHH says he would call it in the ring and within a few minutes he realized Shawn was fine and hadn’t missed a step. Taker says everything was spot on and calls it magic. HHH is blown away that Shawn was this good after four years away from the ring and felt like he was trying to catch up to Shawn. Yeah, they killed it! Shawn says it gave him chills and he got his confidence back.

-Shawn wins the World Title at Survivor Series in the first Elimination Chamber. That was the only World Title Shawn would win during his comeback and I believe that was by his choice. He didn’t want the burden and pressure. We see a highlight reel of the comeback including the spectacular superkick to Shelton Benjamin. They touch briefly on the Mania matches with Jericho and Angle. That Angle one is one of my favorite matches of all time and deserves every bit of a 5 star rating. They note Shawn making the young guys in the ring foreshadowed what he would do later with NXT.

-Taker says there was an easiness about Shawn and you could tell he was a changed man. “Those are the kinds of people I like to be around.” We know he was changed, but the the old Shawn (minus the drugs) would pop up from time to time.

WrestleMania 23: Shawn’s wife and son are in the crowd watching him Main Event against John Cena. He calls it Heaven on Earth having his two worlds combine and be in sync.

-We meet Cheyenne Hickenbottom, Shawn’s daughter. Wow, first time I can recall them having her talk on camera. She says he was just her dad and was always like that. He only cared about his wife, kids and getting home after a good show to spend time with them. She has been working in NXT since she was nineteen. She was on her way to graduation and HHH asked what she wanted to do. Shawn told him that she was into hair and makeup and they gave her a chance. She was told to show up and if she makes it great, and if not oh well. She has been there ever since.

-We meet his son, Cameron, next, and he has several inches in height on his dad. Cameron is part of the creative department as his passion is art. Shawn says his kids get held to a different standard and he is so proud of who they are more than what they do. Good for Shawn and his kids!

-Sept. 3, 2025: Shawn is working out and talks about stretching his body and doing yoga. For him it is more about mobility. He shows off the watch he got for himself and Ric to commemorate their Mania XXIV match.

WrestleMania XXIV: Ric says Shawn told him he was leading the match and Ric says it took a load off his shoulders. He credits Shawn for giving more than anyone could in a match that night. Shawn grew up seeing Flair as an idol and had to be the one to end his career. “I’m sorry. I love you.” Shawn says the match restores his love and joy for the business. He jokes he got to do his version of Natching, meaning buying things you don’t need. We see Shawn and Ric talking about the watches backstage after the show.

WrestleMania XXV: I was there as it was my first Mania. The greatest match I have ever seen in person. I still don’t have the words to describe what it was like inside that stadium. People were hugging and crying when the match ended. Taker says all he had to do was being The Undertaker and Shawn just had to be Shawn. That kick out of the Tombstone is still epic. Ethan Page calls it magic and one of the greatest matches of all time. Taker says he thinks it is the best match he has ever been in and for the first time Shawn felt that was the best match to end his career. Basically, the match is 5 stars if any match is going to get that rating.

WrestleMania XXVI: I was there for this one as well and the rematch is the second best match I have ever seen live. It nearly matched the previous one, but the expectations were off the chart. They delivered another classic and Shawn’s career is over. We see his daughter backstage with her arms crossed and she tells us now that she hated The Undertaker. That’s tremendous! It’s still real to her you could say.

-Taker notes that Shawn left the way he should leave. He was at peace and fulfilled with his decision. Shawn was removed from the business and got involved in a hunting show on The Outdoor Channel. He was living on a ranch in West Texas and would show up every now and then as a special guest.

-HHH started to wind his career down and started up NXT as a way to show he could run a promotion. Shawn was into that was well, but never saw it as a path. Shawn was in Orlando for a few weeks visiting family and asked HHH to tour the PC. Shawn says he had that feeling he hadn’t had since retirement. Shawn decided to stay and his daughter notes they bought a house while on vacation and went back to Texas just to move to Florida.

-Bloom thinks Shawn becoming part of NXT was a long, sinister plan by HHH. HHH knew Shawn could help immensely as he wasn’t a new coach. He was one Shawn Michaels. Taker asks who else would you want teaching the next generation. Shawn asked to have his own class and he wanted them to watch matches and focus on what was important. They were focused on the moves, but he had them close their eyes and just listen. They thought he was crazy, but soon picked up on the sounds of the crowd and what Shawn was wanting them to learn.

-Shawn Spears tells a story of working with Eric Young for weeks and they couldn’t figure out a finish for their TakeOver Match. They went to Shawn and within 15 seconds he gave them one and they were stunned at how simple and perfect it was. We see the finish to the match as Spears talks about Shawn being a genius.

-Shawn becomes HHH’s right hand mind and they get as close as they can to the days of talking wrestling while in the van traveling from town to town. The talent talk about sitting and listening to HHH and Shawn talk wrestling. HHH knew if he had to take on a different role, Shawn could handle NXT and that’s what happened.

-Aug. 19, 2021: HHH is working hard and gets sick. He thought it was the flu, but a doctor told him to get in a car and go to Yale as he was in heart failure. Shawn says it was a blur as personally his best friend is in poor health. He didn’t want the pressure of doing everything HHH did. He just wanted to contribute but not have the anxiety and pressure. He also knew he couldn’t say no to stepping in for his friend when it was needed. In some way he could pay HHH back for what he did for him years ago. He jumped in with both feet and wanted to keep the ship moving at minimum. We see the video of his addressing the kids for the first time and there are some familiar faces in the crowd. Bruce says they all knew Shawn was ready to take over NXT and The PC.

-Sept. 30, 2005: Shawn says he likes a challenge, but has a fragile ego. He doesn’t want the responsibility, but when he has it, he doesn’t want people to know he didn’t want it. He tries to do his job well and tries to put on a good two hour TV show. He will keep doing it until someone tells him to stop.

-HHH notes when he was down, a lot of company upheaval was happening. Yep, this was when Vince took over NXT and killed the black and gold era for NXT 2.0. Some say it was fall-out of HHH losing the battle to AEW. The black and gold era was experienced talent (SUPER INDIE) and 2.0 was the young kids like Hayes, Breakker, and Trick. Shawn calls it a miracle as 80% of the people on the show were in the business for six months and notes he would have shit a brick wrestling on a show like that at six months in the business.

-Shawn talks about HHH passing on some knowledge that Dusty told him. We see Shawn working with the kids in NXT again. Jacy puts Shawn over for giving real and honest critiques. Sol says Shawn really does care about them. Trick says Shawn talks to him about being great at what you do. He felt he has earned Shawn’s respect.

-More of Shawn with the kids as he likes to joke with them and we get Grandpa Shawn learning the lingo of the kids today. Evans calls Shawn the greatest to ever do it.

-More fun with the kids as Shawn is doing Tik Tok videos in a Cyber Truck. Shawn says he likes to embarrass his kids. They have to walk him through the new trends.

-Oct. 7, 2025: Shawn talks about how in WWE it was always about WWE being the only and top brand. They had an opportunity to work with TNA for Showdown. Bloom says it was exciting to see Shawn embrace the TNA idea and mentions Shawn was part of the Monday Night Wars. Shawn: “Why can’t the whole business flourish? How bad would that be?” They focus on The Hardy Boyz winning the NXT Tag Titles and Jeff says it is an honor to be there with Shawn running the show. Matt thanks Shawn for giving back like he is right now.

-Shawn says he is still a wrestling fan and gets caught up in on the show. He will often grab Bloom’s hand and start praying. He says these are the nights he sleeps the best and nights like this are why he works so hard the other six days. Je’Von says he wants to see if he can hug and does so as he mugs to the camera, which Shawn picks up on.

-Shawn wants to praise this generation with the hope they will do the same with the next generation. He talks about all the unbelievable athletes and how they are training them to do things right. We wrap up with everyone talking about Shawn making a difference in people’s lives. Shawn says he has mended a lot of fences. Bret says Shawn has changed a lot and mature. Cheyenne says her dad deserves to be viewed as one of the greatest. HHH puts Shawn over as a guy that moved the business forward. Taker says Shawn leading the kids will be his biggest contribution to the business. Shawn carries about his life and children and if he can lead them better off, he will rest easy in eternity.

-We end with Shawn congratulating Je’Von for getting the call up to the main roster.

-Credits with outtakes and Shawn’s kids goofing on their dad. Some funny stuff here!

-So, what we got was good and I enjoyed it, but I was left a little disappointed. I have this right now as the weakest of the Peacock Specials. There devoted a lot of time on this to Shawn working in NXT. From the title, I should have guessed this was more about Shawn becoming what he is today than what he was as a wrestler. They just rushed through the in-ring career and that was disappointing. I wanted more of that and more of his issues with Bret. They didn’t touch (or it was edited out) on the Syracuse incident or the issues with Hogan heading into SummerSlam. I appreciate the honesty about the drug use, but they never got into the politics Shawn would play or specifics on how he was a dick in the 90s. I enjoyed this for what it was, but that last 20 minutes was all NXT stuff and it got kind of repetitive with Shawn teaching the kids. It is worth a watch just for some of the rare footage, but there isn’t much new here as far as Shawn’s in ring career. With that said, what he is doing with the kids in NXT is great and it’s just nice to see Shawn has conquered his demons and is still with us, when I bet many people in the 90s had me being one of the many tragic stories in wrestling.

-Thanks for reading!
