AJ Lee Reveals Why She Decided to Return to WWE

As AJ Lee gets ready to compete in her first singles match in over a decade at WWE Elimination Chamber, the former Divas Champion has revealed why she opted to return to the company last year. Lee returned to the company after a decade-long absence in September 2025 to confront Becky Lynch after The Man joined Seth Rollins in his fight against CM Punk.

AJ and Punk subsequently defeated Lynch and Rollins in a Mixed Tag Team at Wrestlepalooza. Tonight, at the Elimination Chamber PLE, Lee will challenge Becky for the Women’s Intercontinental Championship.

During the WWE Elimination Chamber Countdown pre-show, AJ Lee gave an interview to Michael Cole and revealed that she decided to return to WWE because of Becky Lynch, whom she considers her “Mount Everest.” Lee said she wanted to prove she could dominate two generations of women’s wrestlers in WWE. She stated the following

“I feel like Becky chose me. She went after my husband, and I think there was a chance she knew that would maybe get me out of retirement. But I’ve got to say, if it had been almost anyone else, I don’t know if I would have taken that challenge. It’s the fact that Becky is this Mount Everest to me. She’ll say it, too. She’s one of the best there is right now, and I want to prove that I can exist and dominate in two generations.

“The option kept coming up, and the question was if this would be something I would be interested in, and the answer was always, ‘No, she’s done!’ There was a day when I woke up and the answer was maybe, and once it was maybe, I knew it was a yes.”
