More Details on Why AJ Styles Recently Filed New Trademarks Amid Retirement Rumors

AJ Styles sparked further retirement rumors this week after filing trademarks for “Phenomenal AJ Styles” and “P1,” sparking rumors that Styles might plan to continue to wrestle elsewhere after leaving WWE. However, the Wrestling Observer Newsletter notes that the trademarks likely serve a practical purpose.
According to Dave Meltzer, the trademarks could simply be filed to give him control over his branding for appearances, merchandise, or media projects outside the ring. WWE contracts typically cover ring names for wrestling, but performers can still use them for outside ventures with prior legal approval.
Meltzer also notes that there is no “serious talk” toward Styles going to AEW or NJPW. Styles has expressed his desire for a TNA match, so it remains to be seen if that is something WWE would allow, as so far they have only approved him to make appearances for TNA. Meltzer also noted that he had the impression that Styles was with WWE for the long haul and would continue to have a job there after his in-ring retirement.
At 48, AJ Styles has been open about the clock ticking on his career. He has previously said that 2026 will mark the end of his in-ring wrestling career. He is putting his career on the line against Gunther at the WWE Royal Rumble today.
