Responding to a question on social media, indie wrestler Billy Dixon was asked about the worst piece of advice he was ever given. Billy Dixon later shared that it came from a current writer for WWE NXT, who allegedly advised Nixon to portray a wrestler who “happened to be gay” instead of “being a gay wrestler.”

He wrote, “A current NXT writer told me to be a wrestler than so happened to be gay vs being a gay wrestler and it may not be the worst but definitely the most baffling lol” He later added, “And then on NXT they had Jake Atlas walk around pulse without actually saying what happened there and talk around his sexuality just really weird republican stuff lol”

Billy Dixon is referring to a vignette that aired on WWE NXT, featuring the openly gay wrestler, Jake Atlas, walking around the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando. In 2019, there was a mass shooting at the venue, where Omar Mateen shot and killed 49 people and wounded 58 others.

Last year, Jake Atlas spoke to Developmentally Speaking about pitching the vignettes of himself at Pulse Nightclub. He indicated that he wanted to honor the victims of the tragedy, stating, “I thought it’d be special to kind of honor that and put that on TV. I wanted to carry a lot of weight for being the only openly gay wrestler on TV at NXT at the time.”

Atlas was later released by WWE in August 2021. Dixon is also an openly gay wrestler and supporter of LGBTQ+ representation in pro wrestling.
