Bret Hart recently related the story of his interaction with Shawn Michaels backstage following the Montreal Screwjob. The WWE Hall of Famer discussed the legendary incident for its 28th anniversary on the Johnny I Pro Show. Toward the end of the show, he recalled his interaction with Michaels in the locker room after he had famously knocked Vince McMahon out.

Hart recounted the story, which was in his book, of seeing Michaels in the room after McMahon had been knocked out. You can see the highlights below:

On McMahon Being Knocked Out:

“I just want to project like, Vince lay on the ground like a starfish. He was like down out cold for maybe five minutes. And I remember I just sat down. Everybody just sat down and it was just — Vince, first he’s out cold.

“Then they sat him up, and then they dragged him by his arms and armpits. They picked him up and brought him over to a chair, and sat him on the bench. And he was like [blows out], trying to shake his — he was out cold. I broke my hand, and I knew it right then.”

On His Interaction With Michaels:

“And I remember sitting there and I thought — Shawn was like this. [Bends over with face in his hands]. Shawn was like this and he was crying. And I remember being kind of where you are and, I just knocked out Vince who was still out cold.

And I remember looking over at Shawn, and I remember his face, like he’s bent over. I remember I was like, ‘I should go for a 50-yard field goal right now.’ And I remember walking over to him and he was crying. And I think he knew, like he was scared s**tless. Shawn knew that he was in a room with a bunch of wolves, and he was the only lamb in there.

On What He Told Michaels:

“I remember walking over to him, and I remember thinking about it. I said, ‘I should just kick the s**t out of him right now.’ I knew he was in on it. He’s a piece of s**t. He was involved in this right from the start, and I knew it. And then I knew that the best thing to do.

“I just remember, I walked up to him. And I said, “Shawn,” I slapped him on the shoulder, and I remember he barely tilted his head to look at me. I looked at him, I said, ‘Thanks for the match.’ And he and he burst into tears and started crying.”
