On the latest episode of Something To Wrestle With, Bruce Prichard talked about the reason for the World Heavyweight Title Match at WrestleMania 22 being a triple threat match. The match saw Kurt Angle defend against Rey Mysterio and Randy Orton. You can check out some highlights below:
On Why the Match Became a Triple Threat:
“Very simple, in that he wanted to make that attraction as strong as he possibly could. And in doing so, haing Rey overcome. First of all, Rey overcame in the Royal Rumble. For Rey to overcome two opponents the caliber of Kurt Angle and Randy Orton, that makes Rey even stronger. So the feeling was is, ‘How do you do it the best for Rey, but also to make sure that Randy comes out of it good, and Kurt comes out of it good on the other side?’ And I think that they that we accomplished that. But it was more than anything to make it as big as you possibly could. The single match would have been fine, and you still got them, ‘I’m going to do it for Eddie.’ But the triple threat with a personal issue with Randy made it that much more.”
On Paul Burchell’s Pirate Gimmick:
“Paul was a guy in developmental that did a Johnny Depp impersonation like Jack Sparrow in Pirates Of the Caribbean. And Vince saw it, liked it, and by god, wanted a pirate. ‘By God, we’re going to have a pirate.’ I just got elected to produce that first debacle with the little people… God, it was snakebit right off the bat. But no, that wasn’t me. I liked Paul, like Paul a lot. But you know, he needed a lot of work, still. Other than the Jack Sparrow impersonation, which Vince liked. That was that and that was good. But I don’t think anybody else saw much more for him beyond that.”
