World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk recently reflected on his epic match against John Cena at Money in the Bank 2011, stating that it would likely be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame someday.
Punk bested The Cenation Leader in front of his home fans in Chicago on July 17, 2011, to win the WWE Championship. Speaking on WWE Break It Down, The Best in the World declared his victory over Cena that night as the moment he made it.
“That was the moment that I made it. This past WrestleMania, I had the honor to induct Bret Hart versus Stone Cold Steve Austin, WrestleMania 13, in that same building, into our Hall of Fame, and I can only imagine someday, somebody is going to be inducting Money in the Bank 2011, CM Punk versus John Cena, into the Hall of Fame as a big match moment,” Punk said. CM Punk’s contract was set to expire at the end of the night, and with him and Vince McMahon not coming to terms on the new deal, he decided to leave the company with the title. In his absence, John Cena was crowned the new WWE Champion. However, Punk returned with his title to set a match for the Undisputed Championship at SummerSlam, with Triple H being the special guest referee. He once again defeated Cena but couldn’t leave The Biggest Party of The Summer with the belt, as Kevin Nash’s post-match attack allowed Alberto Del Rio to cash in his MITB contract and win the title.
