Eric Bischoff Says Throwing WWE Women’s Title In Trash Was Madusa’s Best Idea

On the latest episode of 83 Weeks, Eric Bischoff talked about the 30th anniversary of one of the most infamous moments in the Monday Night Wars when Madusa threw the WWF Women’s Championship into the trash on WCW Monday Nitro.
The moment came on the December 18th, 1995 episode of WCW. Madusa had just jumped to WCW after she was released from WWE. The incident resulted in Madusa being persona non grata in WWE for years. You can check out some highlights below:
On the Idea:
“I want to go on record as saying — you know, I go back and forth with Madusa sometimes on social media because she’s pretty quick. But that was the best idea Madusa has ever had. She really hit her creative peak when she came to me with that idea. Because you know, I wouldn’t have nor thought of that. It hadn’t occurred to me. I would have never put her in that position.
“But man she — I guess, according to her sitting on a toilet, looking at that belt in the corner of the bathroom. And light bulb must have went off in her head, and she threw it out there. And I was like, ‘Hell yeah, I’ll do that.’ So hats off to you, Madusa. Best idea you’ve ever had.”
On It Being One of the First Direct Shots From WCW At WWE:
“Well, [the first shot] was going head-to-head. I mean, when you walk up to somebody and take their lunch money, that’s pretty much it, right? And you know, Monday night was Vince’s lunch money. And we walked in and took it, and that was the first shot. I think Lex Luger was the second shot. Giving away their finishes was the third shot. I think Madusa dropping the belt — now I’m going to say it was the fourth shot. That doesn’t mean it wasn’t one of the more significant shots in that list, but we’re talking about chronologically. Because each of these happened in a relatively short period of time, you know what I mean?
“So it was just one big thing. I mean, it’s going head-to-head, was pretty big, right? Arguably, the very first shot, but just the way we approached it once, we went head-to-head. Like I said, giving away their finishes. Lex Luger, Madusa throwing that belt.
On the Impact of the Madusa Moment:
“You know, people forget. A lot of people that I do business with forget sometimes. People sometimes forget talking about something on television and seeing something on television are two different things. They’re similar in some respects. And when you combine the seeing and the hearing and experiencing, it can be magic.
“But one of the things that I think made the Madusa moment so big in comparison to some of the others was that it was the first time we had that tangible — we took their trophy. We stole their horse, whatever. Took their bike, whatever metaphor you kind of want to come up with for it, and dismissed it as garbage. That was a pretty big statement, pretty big statement. I’m sure Madusa feels like it was the first shot, but it was probably number four or five. But no less significant compared to the others.”
