– During a recent appearance on Cafe de Rene with Rene Dupree, former WWE writer and ROH wrestler Jimmy Jacobs recalled the scary Top Rope Powerbomb spot that took place at ROH Dragon Gate Challenge 2006. Below are some highlights (via Fightful):
Jimmy Jacobs on the Powerbomb spot: “B.J. (Whitmer) and I, we had a tag team in Ring of Honor and had a good feud and we were doing a spot where we’re both on the top rope. It was an old EZ Money/Kid Kash spot. Top rope, powerbomb, flip it into the ‘rana and we’re up there and he slips backwards. It’s like the craziest f*cking bump. He slips backwards and basically powerbombs me. My head hits the top rope, middle rope, bottom rope, apron. It looked like we f*cking died. It’s a crazy one… It wasn’t intentional. It looked like we both f*cking died.”
On coming out of the match fine: “I was fine. Once I saw the tape — and it was tapes back in those days — once I saw the tape, I was like, ‘Oh my God, I almost died there. That was really close.’ To follow that up, the next match we did, it was in New York. We were both on the top rope, facing the crowd and he powerbombed me over the guardrail. He jumps with me and we both f*cking go over the guardrail into the f*cking people and then we had plants there to catch us. It was risky if we f*cked it up. But it was super safe but it looks awesome because it’s like powerbomb off the top rope, over the guardrail into just a sea of people and just we disappear. So which is to say, look, I did some stuff that wasn’t necessarily smart. But, I tried not to be flippant about it. They were calculated risks…”
Whitmer defeated Jacobs in the singles bout at Dragon Gate Challenge. Jacobs and Whitmer later attempted a variation of the spot once again at ROH In your Face 2006. However, for that instance, there were plants in the crowd who were ready to catch them for the move.
