During a recent appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, former WWE Superstar and reigning MLW World Heavyweight Champion Killer Kross spoke about an incident in WWE where he was listening in on headset in the Gorilla Position during a show. However, Kross revealed that one week later, no one was allowed to listen in on headset anymore. Kross is unsure why that was the case, but he speculated that he may have heard things that he “shouldn’t have heard.”
Kross also discussed how he dealt with the “stuck in catering” mindset and working in WWE and not being given anything to do. Below are some highlights
Killer Kross on Being Stuck Backstage With Nothing To Do in WWE
“Oh, dude. It was insane. That’s why I would always try to like sit in the truck and watch stuff, like I would always try to be doing something, like to sit backstage and have literally nothing to do. That was the worst for me. I had to be learning something. I had to be picking something up. Even if I could sit next to an agent or a producer and listen to them on the headset, there was one time I was on the headset, and then after that nobody was allowed in the headset, but we can’t talk about that yet.”
On WWE Not Allowing Wrestlers To Sit In on Headset After That
“Yeah. I was sitting, I just wanted to make the most out of the day. We didn’t have anything for that particular day, and I sat down in Gorilla on the headset, and it wasn’t the first time I’d ever done that, and I was on the headset in the truck anyways, and I think it was like the next week. I didn’t say a word, dude. It didn’t cause a problem, you know. The next week, no one was allowed to do that anymore. [Helwani asks him why he thinks that is the case.] I don’t know. Maybe I heard things I shouldn’t have heard.”
On Doing Things to the Best of His Ability
“I feel like I’m doing it to the best of my ability, and that’s what’s most important to me. You know, I think you can get trapped in chasing the title of being the best at anything because it’s so subjective. Like I watch people all the time, they need every single person in the building to say that they are the best. and they’re willing to like chop themselves apart to the point where even if they did get that for one brief moment of everybody saying that you’re the best. It’s like, what does it even mean if like you’re less than you were afterwards, you know, is chasing these stunts and this crazy stuff? Like, I get concerned with stuff like that. I don’t think about things like that. I think about doing my best to make sure that people had a good night on that night and taking one day at a time and then looking back at the body of work and saying, ‘We hit a series of home runs. That’s not bad. These people went home, and they remembered something special, creating a moment for them that night.’
“And I feel like I’ve been doing that every single performance since August. That’s what I’ve been focusing on. What can I do differently tonight that’s going to be memorable from the rest of the people on the card that they can go home with? A father can look at his son or his daughter or his wife or just two friends that are enjoying a show or even some guy that’s just there by himself who’s grieving or whatever. He just needs to forget about it. He can remember that one thing that I did. He can remember that. I could see him 10 years later at a meet and greet, and go that night I was there, and I won’t even know what he’s talking about. That’s been my thing that I try to do everywhere. That’s what I kind of aim towards.”
On How He Dealt With Being ‘Stuck in Catering’ in WWE
“Yeah, it’s I’ll tell you how I processed it at the time. I said, ‘You know what? I made a commitment, and I signed a contract, and I knew that there was a potential that something like this could happen. So, I’m not going to complain about it. I’m not going to make a fuss. I’m going to be here. I’m going to be ready and willing to run to play even if there is no play to run.’ But when that happens for years, dude, you start looking at things a lot differently. You’re like, man, I don’t want my entire life to pass me by for the comfort and the clout of saying, I work here. hat’s not that’s not it for me. I would rather I’d rather sell out the dive bar, being the most well-known and liked outlaw punk rock band around the corner from your house, than playing in a stadium like your worst hits cuz you’re not allowed to play your best stuff.
“That’s how I look at it. That’s just what that’s what makes me happy. That’s what’s fulfilling to me. If I was allowed to play my best stuff on, you know, the biggest and grandest stages of them all, this is a totally different story. This is a different conversation, but that’s what’s important to me is finding a purpose, like a personal purpose, not just a professional, but a personal purpose in what it is that I’m doing, allowing it to be my purpose that I can kind of collaborate and integrate into whatever the promoter needs that night. Knowing the audience that you’re working in front of and knowing what they’re looking for out of you and knowing what they’re looking for out of that segment of the night, that’s very important to me.”
Scarlett also chimed in during the exchange about the headset issue, noting that the incident is documented in Killer Kross’ new documentary, Blurring the Lines, which is available now on his YouTube channel.
