Randy Orton will face Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship at WrestleMania 42, and a new report notes the original pitch for the title match. As noted, Orton is set to challenge Rhodes for the championship at April’s two-night PLE. Orton earned the match by way of his Elimination Chamber win, while Rhodes defeated McIntyre on last week’s SmackDown to capture the title.
According to PWInsider (via F4W Online), the original pitch for the match would have seen Rhodes challenge McIntyre for the championship. The match between the two, who have battled multiple times in the last few months, would have taken place inside Hell in a Cell.
The two battled in a steel cage on the January 9th episode of WWE SmackDown as the final stage of their Three Stages of Hell match. McIntyre defeated Rhodes in that match to win the championship after Jacob Fatu returned to TV and got involved, inadvertently giving McIntyre the win. Rhodes then won the title back on last week’s show.
F4W Online notes that, as of right now, the plan is for Rhodes vs. Orton to remain a singles match. (As always, remember the mantra: “Plans Can Change.”)
WrestleMania 42 is set to take place on April 18th and 19th at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. The show will air live on ESPN Unlimited in the US and on Netflix internationally.
