Sami Zayn has issued an apology for his referee work in the Undisputed WWE Championship match on last week’s WWE Smackdown. As noted, Zayn served as the guest referee for the Cody Rhodes vs. Gunther match on Friday’s show, and during the bout he got into it with Gunther on several occasions.

The finish to the match saw Zayn kick Gunther’s hands off the ropes and deliver a fast count to give Rhodes the win and title retention. When the match was restarted by Nick Aldis at Gunther and Rhodes’ request, Zayn hit Rhodes with a Helluva Kick for the DQ and then hit the referee and Rhodes.

There is now a triple threat match between Rhodes, Gunther and Zayn set for the championship at WWE Night of Champions. Zayn posted to Twitter on Monday to issue an apology, writing:

“I’d like to apologize. I did my best to fairly call the WWE Championship match between my friend, Goldenboy Cody Rhodes & Gunther. What transpired in the end was not reflective of who I am. I know my Ride or Die fans will have my back regardless, but I promise to do better.”

WWE Night of Champions takes place on Saturday from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and airs live on ESPN Unlimited in the US, and Netflix internationally. The first hour will also be simulcast on ESPN.
