AEW President Tony Khan recently appeared on the Battleground Podcast, where he discussed several things, including signing former WWE Superstar and newly crowned TNT Champion Tommaso Ciampa and Britt Baker’s ongoing hiatus from weekly programming.
Just a few days after announcing his departure from WWE, Tommaso Ciampa arrived in All Elite Wrestling last Wednesday on Dynamite, answering Mark Briscoe’s Open Challenge for the TNT Championship. On Collision, The Psycho Killer dethroned Briscoe as TNT Champion, becoming only the second wrestler, after Mercedes Mone, to capture championship gold in the Tony Khan-led company on debut.
Khan commented on Ciampa’s acquisition on Battleground, stating that as soon as the latter became a free agent, he thought it was an “exciting development.” Tony called Ciampa a “fantastic wrestler” and brought up his history with ROH. The AEW boss also enjoyed Ciampa’s debut match in the company, as he called it “fantastic.”
“When Ciampa became available, I thought that was such an exciting development. He is such a great wrestler; he has a great history in Ring of Honor, and he has never been in AEW. Talk about somebody who is a fantastic wrestler. AEW is where the best wrestle, so when the top free agents become available, I’ve always wanted to sign them, whether it’s somebody who has never wrestled in AEW before, like Tommaso Ciampa and the new TNT Champion after this fantastic match he had with Mark Briscoe. I thought that was just outstanding.”
Tony Khan on Britt Baker’s continued absence from AEW television
During the conversation, the host asked Khan about former AEW Women’s World Champion Britt Baker’s prolonged absence from weekly programming. Baker has not been featured on AEW TV since November 2024.
Khan said he likes Britt a lot and that he expects her to return to TV, given that there are now more opportunities in the women’s division. However, he steered clear of revealing when fans can expect the D.M.D. on their television screens.
“I really like Britt a lot, and I think there’s so many exciting things happening in the women’s division, so Britt’s somebody I really like and respect a lot and definitely think, as we’ve evolved with more tag teams and singles wrestling opportunities now across multiple shows, now that we have four hours of TV with Dynamite and Collision, I think there’s gonna be more and more opportunities. You’re seeing I’m signing a lot more young wrestlers, and Britt’s still somebody very highly regarded and respected here in AEW, so I would expect to see Britt back in AEW. I just don’t wanna say when.
“It’ll be a good thing for everybody when Britt returns, and I think it’s gonna be very, very good in terms of, for AEW right now, when you look at how the roster has evolved, there’s more and more fresh matches. Britt’s somebody I would absolutely love to have back in AEW soon.”
