-It’s 3:42 AM in Western PA, and I can’t sleep because of a lingering cough. While I wait for the Mucinex to kick in to give me some relief, I figured, let’s start tackling the new WWE Unreal Season 2 episodes, following all the recent trailers. I enjoyed the last season for what it was, and this time the focus is on the storylines, angles, and build to SummerSlam. A cool inside look for fans. Away we go as Unreal returns! Chris Weaver directs while Erik Powers is the showrunner. Skydance Media’s sports division, Skydance Sports, Omaha Productions, and NFL Films are co-producers of the show, with Peyton Manning, Lee Fitting, Ross Ketover, Jamie Horowitz, and more all listed as producers.
-We start the premiere with Seth Rollins, who tells us his birth name is Colby Daniel Lopez. He has wrestled as God, Gixx, Tyler Black, Taj The Destroyer, and now Seth Rollins. We get some Seth highlights set to his WWE theme. He says his name was chosen by the late, great Dusty Rhodes, and we get a piece of a Dusty Rhodes promo. Seth goes over how his name was chosen and does his best Dusty impression. Seth says coming out of Mania, he is at the tip, tip top of the business. Everyone wants to be there, but only a few can stay there.
-Becky Lynch talks about her hot husband. Seth loves having her on the road with him. Michael Hayes remembers when he found out they were an item. It was the last time they were at MetLife Stadium (Mania XXXV), and he saw them making out. Seth calls Becky a unicorn, and we get video of their small wedding in Hawaii, with only 20 people. Their first dance was Seth putting his phone in a bowl, playing music.
-One of the executive producers, Triple H, is up next and talks about how they are 365 days a year and there are no days off. The cycle starts over the day after Mania, and the next long-term destination is SummerSlam. He goes over what the goals are and how there will be a lot of focus on Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch.
-We start properly on April 15, which is days before WrestleMania, and Seth and Becky are working out in a ring. Becky says it is timed to get calloused as she is coming back at Mania. Her real name is Rebecca Quin, and she has gone by The Lass Kicker, The Man, Big Time Becks, Becky Two Belts, and now just Becky Lynch. HHH says she is top of the Women’s Locker Room, but started a notch below others like Bayley and Charlotte. She says she has been on the chopping block since day one. He calls her an underdog, and we go back to 2018 when she famously got her nose broken by Nia Jaxx, and it helped turn her into the biggest star in the business. That helped turn her into The Man.
-She mentions she was burned out in 2024 as she was all go since coming back after having her daughter, and needed a pause. We see Seth and Becky at home with their daughter. Oh, I remember those days. Seth says Becky puts so much pressure on herself to do everything well. He talks about how incredible she is as a mother and how caring and loving. Becky loves WWE and was away from home, and was worried her daughter would be mad at her. She talks about the great feeling of seeing her daughter do a half-decent cartwheel. She mentions her contract was up in May 2024, and she told HHH she wanted a break. He told her that it was fine and they would come back to it.
-Becky started training with Seth in early 2025. She was always fit, but ring shape is completely different. She talks about how you feel like you were in a car crash, and her back starts seizing up on her during a workout.
-We head to WWE Headquarters as HHH, and the staff discuss Becky’s role at Mania. The idea is for her to be the surprise partner of Lyra Valkyria. That leads us to Aoife Cusack, who has wrestled as Valkyrie, Aoife Valkyrie, and now Lyra Valkyria. She is from Dublin, Ireland, and what made her want to wrestle is Becky Lynch. The first match she saw was Becky in NXT doing an Irish Dance. Becky came to the gym to train in 2018, and it made Lyra cry seeing her. She says Becky was lovely to her, and we see the photo they took together. We see video of Lyra becoming the first WWE Women’s Intercontinental Champion.
-HHH talks about the emotional connection Lyra and Becky have together. He talks to the team about how Becky being the partner is okay for Becky to be obvious because the crowd is going to pop no matter what.
-WrestleMania 41: We see Becky talking to Michael Cole and Wade Barrett in the arena. She mentions how sore her back has been. We see her hugging her daughter backstage, who is crying. Aw! You can see that it is making Becky emotional. She says the time off may have been forever, and says this is the final contract, and she is going to enjoy it the best she can. She won’t be surprised if she gets booed tonight. Yeah, right!
-She is in Gorilla, a ball of energy, and gets a pep talk from Tyson Kidd. Lyra is also rather nervous, and Becky tries to calm her a bit. The match is for the Tag Titles with Liv and Raquel against Lyra and Becky. As expected, Becky gets a big pop for making her return, and we see a woman in the crowd crying, which pops Tyson Kidd. “Yeah, they hate Becky.” Lyra is nearly in tears, and I am sure that was a surreal moment for her. We see Seth in Gorilla, and he wipes away a few tears. Relationship goals!
-We get highlights from the match, cut with reactions from Gorilla. Becky pins Liv with the Man Handle Slam and wins the Tag Titles with Lyra. Becky is looking forward to working with Lyra and giving her a story. She told Lyra she is her biggest hope for the future, as they need people like her. The new Champs pose with HHH and Stephanie McMahon backstage, and Steph notes, “three Irish girls.” HHH says the goal is for Becky to help Lyra get to the next level, and that’s where the magic is.
-Becky shows her daughter the Championship Belt and lets her hold it. Becky is just beaming, and it makes me smile.
-The Next Day: HHH says it is a way to start a different path for Becky and Lyra on the road to SummerSlam. We get highlights from the rematch where Liv and Raquel regain the Tag Titles. Becky then turns on Lyra after the match and gets a big pop. HHH says betrayal is always a great way for someone to become heel. Lyra says they didn’t even discuss what it would look like, but what it ended up being man handle slam after manhandle slam while the crowd cheered. Lyra laughs, and Becky says it wasn’t ideal for the crowd to chant, “one more time.” She talks about how the crowd knows her more than Lyra. Lyra says he wasn’t surprised, as she still has to build that connection with the crowd, and Becky always has that connection. Becky says she realized she has achieved everything, and now it is the long game, and she wants to give back. She says she knows she will get Lyra over.
-Bruce Prichard talks about the pressure of coming up with Backlash after WrestleMania and how it was a pain in the ass. They knew they could use new characters, and that brings us to Pat McAfee. He tells us his name is Pat McAfee, and he has wrestled under the name Pat McAfee. As I have mentioned, Pat is a Western PA boy (Plum High School) and went to college at WVU (which is 30 minutes from my house). HHH says Pat is the face of WWE to a lot of people. We get highlights of McAfee playing for the Colts and his work on ESPN. Pat isn’t for everyone, but the man has worked his ass off for everything he has.
-Michael Cole notes Pat is a massive wrestling fan and they brought him in to work NXT pre-shows. He then got to work Mania pre-shows, and they asked him to be part of the announce team. That brings us to now and how they had the idea of Pat wrestling GUNTHER and the story being Pat defending Michael Cole. They planted the seed the night after Mania, where Cole took a shot at commentary on Cole and played up Cole and McAfee “YEETING” with Jey Uso during his World Title celebration. Pat: “GUNTHER? Can we have someone else, maybe? I am older and have a daughter.” That’s kind of funny.
-We see GUNTHER bully Cole on commentary and then put him in a sleeper. Pat comes in to saf,e and the crowd pops. GUNTHER then puts Pat in a sleeper and chokes him out. HHH in Gorilla: “Tell GUNTHER to not let that fucking thing go.” Pat says he naturally runs red, and GUNTHER had that thing clamped. HHH finally gives the okay for GUNTHER to let go. They relay to Pat that he has to keep working all the way back to Gorilla. Pat jokes he isn’t sure if he is that good of an actor, so he just keeps going with it and spits up and coughs. Pearce tells Cole to take the night off, but he won’t let a bully do that, and that is the emotional hook.
-We head to Pat’s Thunder Dome, where his ESPN Shot operates every day. They built a wrestling ring for Pat inside the place, and it helps him prepare for the match with GUNTHER. Pat mentions he has had seven matches in his life, and we see highlights of his matches against Austin Theory and Miz at WrestleMania. We also see him take a beautiful stunner from Austin at WrestleMania. Pat says the only thing you can’t prepare for is GUNTHER’S chops, and we get a montage and it’s great. Pat says he isn’t nervous as it’s going to happen one way or the other. He feels honored!
-The creative meets again to discuss GUNTHER/McAfee. They actually discuss the idea of McAfee beating GUNTHER. That’s wild, and thankfully, someone brings up how bad that would make GUNTHER look, losing to a commentator after saying he is more focused on getting his title back.
-Backlash: Lyra says she wanted to fit on The Backlash card and wanted to have the most amazing match. Pat says he is a pro athlete, but he was concerned about whether he could live up to having a good GUNTHER match. HHH tells him in Gorilla to take his time and breathe, and to let GUNTHER know, as he will work around him. Basically, GUNTHER can carry you if needed.
-HHH calls him WALTER in Gorilla, which is great. They discuss how GUNTHER will feel it out there and do something to put Pat over in the end. Adam Pearce is the agent for the match and is on the headset in Gorilla with HHH. We see Pat taking the chops. “That shit hurt, bro. I had welts all over me.” Cole gets involved and nearly takes a powerbomb in a fun spot, but Pat saves. The crowd was way into the match, and it did everything it needed. Pat is an athlete and knows the small things to do to make the match work, and obviously, GUNTHER can have a good match with a broomstick. GUNTHER puts McAfee to sleep in the end. HHH says that to win or lose didn’t matter for McAfee that night as he went toe-to-toe with a killer, and GUNTHER shakes his hand after the match.
-Pat notes he is “green as shit” in that business. He will never say he is good, but he will always say he is proud. He doesn’t know how many other matches he will have, so he tries to take a mental Polaroid. He got a little emotional and then was blown away when Cena complimented him after the match. HHH puts over McAfee backstage and says he never noticed him being blown up, and congratulates him.
-Back to Becky and Lyra! TJ Wilson is the producer and is on the headset. Seth is also watching backstage, and you can see his emotions as he watches. They work Lyra’s fiancé into the match as he is sitting in the front row and Becky heels on him. Becky talks about the art of being a heel and how you take shortcuts to success. Lyra gets the upset pin, and Becky immediately jumps on her after the match, which TJ apologizes for, as I guess it was a little too quick. The officials head out and pull Becky away. HHH tells Becky it’s all good, but she could have waited a beat to let the win pop and then attack. He puts over the match, though, and notes they have great chemistry. Lyra says they were told by many people that they had the match of the night. Becky again says that she believes Lyra is the future and they need people like her.
-HHH says the money is really with the long term, and we get a preview of what is to come. Jelly Roll, Penta, Chelsea Green, Rhea Ripley, Naomi, Cody Rhodes, John Cena, Seth, Lyra, Becky, CM Punk, Heyman, R-Truth, and the first two nights of SummerSlam.
-Credits!
-Again, I am a sucker for a show like this, but I can also see why people don’t want to see how well everything is. It is jarring and kind of takes some of the magic away hearing the producer call a spot, and then the wrestlers do it, but at this point, that doesn’t bother me. As always with this show, the WWE is only going to show you what they want, so even when pulling the curtain back, it’s still their show. I liked how this show focused on just two main stories, and the big things for me are the little moments where we see the real people behind the characters. Whether that’s Seth and Becky with their daughter, or Lyra getting emotional at her first Mania, or McAfee getting to live out a dream of being a wrestler. Those are the cool moments! Thanks for reading, and I am going to try to get some sleep before heading to work.
