MMAjunkie Radio recently spoke to UFC welterweight fighter Stephen Thompson. Thompson is going to now face former UFC champion Johny Hendricks at UFC 196. Below are some highlights.

Thompson on how he had to turn down a late notice fight as Jorge Masvidal’s replacement at UFC’s South Korea card: “I was like, listen, this is two weeks’ notice. I don’t feel comfortable flying all the way out there.”

Thompson on his match-up with Hendricks: “This is the fight I’ve been looking for – someone in the top-five. I was very nervous and super-excited, because I know Hendricks is a tough guy. But this is why I’m in the game. I’m going for the belt, and this is the guy in my way now.”

Thompson on Hendricks’ wrestling: “He’s one of the best wrestlers in the division, with the best credentials. But I don’t think he’s faced a striker quite like me, and I haven’t faced a wrestler quite like him.”

Thompson on how he’s training to fight Hendricks: “You can never fully emulate your opponent, but you have what you have. I know it’s going to be a tough fight. I’m looking to go three five-minute rounds. He’s a wrestler, but he likes to stand and bang. Hopefully, he does that Feb. 6.”
