As previously reported, Dragon Lee has signed with WWE and will be part of the NXT roster. In the latest Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer offered more details on the situation. It was noted that the deal with Lee was made several weeks ago but it was kept quiet until last night’s AAA Noche de Campeones. That was also part of the deal.

AEW CEO Tony Khan was aware the deal was made and was also aware that Lee and Dralistico would win the AAA tag team titles from FTR with Lee getting the pin. Lee and Dralistico gave up the belts after Lee’s announcement.

It’s believed that Lee felt it was time for him to sign with a major company. He couldn’t go back to NJPW, where he wanted to go, due to their partnership with CMLL, which has an issue with AAA wrestlers. Because New Japan is loyal to CMLL, his contract wasn’t renewed even though they liked him.

Both AEW and WWE were interested in him, and when he asked people, they suggested that WWE would be a better fit. WWE became interested after finding out he appeared on Dynamite this past August without a contract. A similar situation happened with Bandido earlier this year, although Bandido ultimately chose AEW.

It was said that while Lee’s contract is more money than he’d be making in Mexico, he’s not earning main roster money. He will be on an NXT deal.
