CHRIS JERICHO & BIG SHOW vs. MVP & MARK HENRY: This match was joined in progress due to the commercial break between the opening segment and this, which I never like. However, the in-ring work made up for that, as Montel and Jericho started the match off pretty strongly. They needed something good to start off this match and that was the right way to go. But what was especially good to see was that Mizark and Show really carried their weight as well. Normally when you see Henry and Show in the ring together, it’s time to put on the fast forward so it looks like a match at normal speed, but they actually did quite well against each other and their respective smaller men. Jericho used his speed against Henry and MVP showed a couple good moments against Show; while both big men where in the ring, they were booked to their strengths, and we had a fun moment where Henry actually caught Show off an Avalanche attempt. These guys were super-motivated, and even though the winner was never really in doubt they did everything they could to lift the crowd and the show after a terrible opening segment. The ending did some really cool work, and even though we saw the same finish that Jericho and Show seem to do every single time with Show nailing the punch on the outside into a Jericho finish, I was happy with this match which got an amazing amount of time.
LEGACY & DX PROMO TIME: Priceless made their way down to the ring mid-show in matching T-Shirts after we saw the cell hanging over the ring; I swear that Ted is looking more and more like Orton every day. And I don’t mean in stature, I mean he physically looks like Orton, without exaggeration. It’s kind of creepy. They cut a pretty decent promo between the two of them about how no one expects them to win, but they will. We got a video package reminding us of all the ways Priceless has punked D-X out over the last several weeks, which I think pretty much assures Priceless is losing (which, honestly, I’m okay with because they have been elevated in this feud and still will be after a loss). Cody once again beat Ted on the mic and did a good job of putting themselves and D-X over. You have to love the line Cody had about ‘H retiring and sitting in Titan Towers with his all his relatives. Of course, then HBK showed up and made fun of Ted and Cody. Honestly, I wasn’t digging the Hunter humor this week, it just didn’t work right. It worked as a promo, just not as humor. They came down to the ring and Priceless bailed, letting the old guys get their moment in the ring for the crowd to cheer. This worked well for what it needed to do, and I certainly have no complaints about it.
JACK SWAGGER vs. EVAN BOURNE: Swagger came down to the ring all sorts of happy as he had the stolen US Title around his waist. We got a reminder of how Swagger got it before Bourne came out to a more toned-down crowd reaction than usual. He got cheered certainly, but there’s no doubt the constant losses to people not named Chavo are hurting his credibility. This was another one of those losses, and again Bourne did a phenomenal job here as did Swagger. They made this match as good as a three minute match can be, and Bourne got just enough offense to pop the crowd before he fell prey to a Swagger Bomb for the loss. This match was supposed to put Swagger over and give him momentum, and it certainly did that. The match was shorter than I wanted to see, because they needed to have the angle that played after with Swagger getting promo time and Miz refuting his comments while talking himself up. Miz and Swagger started to fight and Kofi got his belt back, and this pushed the US Title match nicely. It just seemed to be lacking something that I can’t put my finger on–not bad, just not great.
RACIAL UNITY AND TAG TEAM TITLE SHOTS: Raw began with new best friends MVP and Mizark hanging in the MVP Lounge. Montel did his usual opening shtick before they tried to welcome the guest host. Hilarity ensued at how quickly the crowd started booing, but it wasn’t Al Sharpton, it was Jericho and Show. Jericho was all “shame on you” and tried to talk up Sharpton, calling him the most prominent civil rights leader of our time. Wow. Yeah, THAT got the crowd booing. Jericho and Montel went back and forth about Sharpton’s accolades–running for president, hosting SNL and so on–to the point you almost thought that the two were going to start hugging in the ring. That didn’t happen though–instead, they introduced Al, who came down to the ring in what looked like a set of black PJ’s. Wow, the crowd HATED him. He talked up his education tour, but the crowd just wasn’t having any of it. This turned into MVP asking for some Tag Team Title reform, and that caused Jericho to launch into his hypocrite/parasite/pharisee/gelatinous thing. He wasn’t even on his game here, briefly tripping over his words. Sharpton then asked the crowd if they wanted the match and for the first time they cheered.
Let’s face it, folks: this opening was terrible. I would have frankly loved this is Sharpton had let himself be played off as a heel. We knew the crowd was going to hate him. He’d have at least earned their respect within a wrestling context if he’d let himself be a bad guy here. Instead he just repeated “It’s a tough crowd” over and over again and played the good guy. Jericho’s mic work was subpar here and MVP looked absolutely sparkling by comparison. This isn’t to say that he was great, just that he didn’t noticeably suck. Sadly, the same can’t be said for this segment.
CHAVO GUERRERO & CHRIS MASTERS vs. HORNSWAGGLE & SANTINO MARELLA: You know, I was happy when Chavo seemed to say he done with Horny. I hoped that it was going to be the case. Then we saw this whole silly segment where they all ran into Sharpton’s office, and we learned that Chavo and Masters were facing Santino and Hornswaggle. Then Santino went off on some comedy routine about how Masters and Chavo were a Geico commercial. Honestly, I have no idea what that was about, but the segment sucked the life out of the crowd in a matter of seconds, and deservedly so.
Then we got the match, which was frankly a piss-break match. Two minutes of comedy between Chavo, Masters, Santino and Hornswaggle. Whee. Santino played things up nicely early on but the crowd was completely bored with this about five seconds in. Santino played this like a handicap match and even got some good moves in including a splits to dodge a clothesline guess he’s been working on his flexibility since trying Melina’s entrance all those months ago? Masters then locked in the Masterlock for the submission and pulled Masters into the ring to hit the Masterlock. Obviously, the point here is to turn Chavo face so he can team with Horny. Whoever called that when this whole thing started, take a cookie, ya done good. This whole thing was pretty bad though, and I didn’t enjoy it.
RANDY ORTON, BIG SHOW & CHRIS JERICHO vs. JOHN CENA: Backstage, Josh Matthews interviewed Randy Orton mid-show and made the mistake of saying Cena would compete in the Gauntlet match. Orton said that Cena wouldn’t compete, he’d be slaughtered, then turned onto Hell in a Cell and how he knew what was coming and Cena didn’t. It wasn’t a bad promo, even if it was a little slow even for Randy.
By the time the main event came, I will admit that I was a little bit skeptical. There were about eighteen minutes left and I didn’t see this as enough time for them to carry off three good matches. Sure enough, we didn’t even get one particularly good match. The match between Cena and Jericho wasn’t too bad; it wasn’t all that good though, either. Cena and Jericho just seemed a little off, and I maintain that it probably was NOT a good idea to have your main event competitors wrestle an eighteen-minute match to start the show. Y’know, just a thought…call me crazy. They were a bit sloppy and just not together, but when they ended with a DQ I was happy with that. I figured Show would pound on Cena a bit, get beaten, and then Orton would come down and Cena would get demolished.
Silly me.
Show and Cena were battling when we came back from break, and it was, to be frank, rather boring. It was slow, almost plodding, likely again from the fact that Show had already wrestled nearly twenty minutes tonight. In a very odd sort of booking, Show/Cena went longer than Jericho/Cena, which doesn’t make sense since Jericho is more conditioned and could go longer. That brought out Orton, and things got silly. Cena just got assaulted by the tag champs? No big deal, he’s SUPAMAN! I don’t often rag on the Super-Cena gimmick because well, it IS his gimmick. But the no-selling of the beat down and then the Cena dominance that followed was supremely silly. I know that a lot of people think it makes Orton more likely to win on Sunday, but I really don’t see Cena only holding the title for a month so that Orton can win it back. Then again, who else could they put Cena up against? Yeah, I can’t think of anyone either, since DX is all face, Show has the Tag belts and no one else is a heel at the main event level on Raw. That’s kind of sad when you think about it. Just like this “match.”
DID YOU KNOW?: Nope. And, as always, I don’t care.
MICKIE JAMES vs. ROSA MENDEZ: As Mickie came to the ring, we learned that she was taking on Alicia Fox at HiaC for the Butterfly Title. And that’s who accompanied Rosa to the ring, of course, for this match. Now let’s face it, we weren’t expecting anything great from this. Mickie can only do so much, and Rosa is a walking negative-star match. Frankly, this was bad on SO many levels. Rosa is trying really hard, bless her heart, but she just doesn’t have it and her ambition to be good is only making the matches worse. We had more than one botch or near-botch in this match; they even botched the Thesz press and Rosa crotching herself on the ropes. How the HELL do you botch those? This was short and it sucked, and Rosa needs to be back in developmental or just stay managing Carlito. That’s all you need to know.

Well, Sharpton made an inoffensively bad GM with almost no impact here, and that’s probably the way it should have been. We got a rare quality opening match in the form of the tag championship match, and the DX/Priceless promo was pretty good. Otherwise, this was a completely skippable show, and that’s a problem. We’re practically in PPV every three weeks mode, and they need to make the most of those weeks to really sell the PPV’s. This just felt like they were treading water, not doing a hard sell, and that sucked. SHOW RATING: 5.0 |

Anyway, I’m very glad to see Batista challenge for tag team gold, becuase it keeps him away from the main event, and it means he is working with Jericho and Rey, which may reduce his suck quotient…as long as this isn’t just postponing his inevitable title win until Wrestlemania.
Also it strikes me that whilst DX were eye bleedingly cringeworthy in 2006/2007, since they started making Legacy look good they have been…gasp…entertaining.
It has been entertaining, hasn’t it? I’ve actually dug the DX/Legacy feud so far, and it’s nice to see. You bring up a good point about Batista and the tag titles, I just don’t see why they bait and switched us on Mizark and MVP other than “Oh hell, Batista’s back and we don’t have a PPV Match for him! Sorry, Raw guys…
And as for Big Show better than Jericho…well, every dog has its day, I guess!

Oh come on. Punk has given the same Promo for about 8 weeks now!!!! Cena, HHH, Orton, or anyone else wouldn’t be able to this without the IWC jumping up and down having a fit. TAKE THE BLINKERS OFF
What blinkers would those be? The ones where I alluded to that very fact that his promo was the same promo he’s been giving? The point is that he’s delivering on the mic in his charisma, voice tone and expressions, even if the words are getting awfully repetitive. Is he as good now as when he started? No, but he’s still good.
Also, it’s blinders, not blinkers. Blinkers are what people should use but don’t when they’re changing lanes. Thanks for reading!

* Shelton Benjamin defeats Paul Burchill by pin at 11:00 [**1/4]
* Goldust, Tommy Dreamer, Yoshi Tatsu, and Christian defeat William Regal, Vladimir Kozlov, Ezekiel Jackson, and Zack Ryder with Tatsu pinning Regal at 16:00 [**3/4]
TEAM CHRISTIAN GETS PUMPED AND FACES TEAM REGAL – I’ll get into anything involving Regal not in the ring later on. I’ll start with Christian rallying the troops backstage. I use those words, because he prepping for a war. At least that is what Josh and Matt would have you believe. His words were perfect with Dreamer, great with Tatsu, and with Goldust… well… I wasn’t sure where he was going with that. The match itself was pretty good, as they limited the weaker link on Team Christian (Goldust) and for the most part kept Kozlov and Big Zeke out during the hot spots. Tatsu getting the hot tag for the end of the match was a curious choice, but nobody made more sense than him in the end. Likewise, you would wonder why Regal would eat the pinfall, but who else could on his team? Big Zeke and Kozlov aren’t losing anytime soon to a kick to the head. And Ryder’s momentum can’t be killed in this type of match. Overall, it worked well.
SHELTON BENJAMIN VS. PAUL BURCHILL – So, before the match begins, we get a brutal beatdown by Sheamus to further that feud along. No problems here, as I prefer that to the nonsense DQ. Shelton wouldn’t hear anything about not having the match and once he got to his feet, the ref rang the bell. Again, no problems here, especially with Shelton slowly getting the face turn. The match was exactly what I expected it to be after the attack. Burchill dominated and every time Shelton tried to mount offense, he got knocked down. The ending came out of the clear blue as Shelton pretty much gets to hit one move and get the win. I can understand Shelton being strong here, but that was borderline Hogan-esque winning there. Burchill gets made to look weak again as he can’t pin a beaten down Shelton for eleven minutes and then loses to one move. This is on the borderline of being wrong, as I just felt like Shelton winning wasn’t the right call, but the match was good enough to keep it up here.
THE ABRAHAM WASHINGTON SHOW – We kicked off this week with the critically acclaimed (or lambasted) Abraham Washington show. Now, I like how Washington wasted no time and got right to the special guest, John Morrison. Now, I’m not thrilled with using a show like this to hype a mid-card feud on Smackdown, but with the “title program” selling itself and Sheamus vs. Shelton happening last week, I was okay with it here. So Morrison comes out and they put over all of his accolades from when he was on ECW. The shots on The Miz were simply hysterical, but even I found the comparison between Miz and Tony Atlas to be in bad taste. But it did work to lead into Dolph Ziggler and the title match at Hell in a Cell. I liked Morrison putting over Ziggler without losing credibility and I liked his confidence. But who in the hell did Ziggler piss off as to not even get a word in on the show? Dolph looked like a freaking goof, being left on the couch like that, but at least he wasn’t buried by Morrison like his former partner was.

REGAL IS NAMED GM AND IS QUICKLY SHOT DOWN – Yeah, I gotta talk about this one. First, with Tiffany having a legit injury and needing to be off television, appointing William Regal as interim GM was probably the best move the WWE could make. However, outside of the good decision here, everything was pretty pathetic with regards to William Regal. First off, he announced that he was told that he can not make any matches involving the ECW Title. Ok, so he can’t name #1 contenders, make #1 contender matches, or have Christian defend his title? So what the hell is ECW going to do for the next month or so until Tiffany is back, go on auto-pilot? That’s pretty bad in itself, but it gets worse. Regal makes a 4 on a 1 handicap match with Christian taking on himself, his round table, and Zack Ryder. Now, it’s a perfect move as a heel GM to make such a match, even if it kills what could have been a great rematch between Christian and Ryder. But of course, Regal got made to look like a complete tool just fifteen minutes later when he is on the phone with the Board of Directors. So somehow, despite running the show, the Board can call you at 10 PM Eastern and just tell you that your match has been changed, with no chance of fighting back. Regal hated it, because he now had to deal with the three “jokes” of Tommy Dreamer, Yoshi Tatsu, and Goldust. The whole thing made Regal look like the joke here, because he is a General Manager with absolutely no power. He might as well just go back home and be named the King of England. Sure, you rule the land, but outside of your nobility and family heritage, you are a dime a dozen.

So ECW is now on Auto-Pilot for the near future. You won’t see any title matches. You won’t see any #1 contender matches. You will see Regal try to make Christian’s live a living hell and probably fail at it several times. You will the continuing saga between Shelton Benjamin and Sheamus, which is all fine and well. But with no real title program for a month, this week’s show just felt off, being the start of it. SHOW RATING: 6.0 |

The Matches:
ECW TITLE MATCH: The opening match (insert ECW joke here) was the EW Title match between Mark Henry and Matt Hardy. I have enjoyed how they have built the angle to the match because it was simple. Hardy won the title, but NEVER pinned or submitted Mark Henry. Henry constantly pointed this out, and it worked because it makes sense. Henry was dominating and Matt couldn’t beat him. Henry constantly bringing this up causes doubt in the mind of the fans, and while Matt was the ECW champion, did he DESERVER to be the ECW Champion? That is what this match did, prove that he belonged as the champion. They worked a simple match and told a simple story. Henry strong, Matt smart and fast. Matt was constantly working the legs of Henry, while Henry would always come back with power moves. But in the end, all of the legwork paid off as it allowed Matt to escape the World’s Strongest Slam, hit the twist of fate and EARN the title. A much better match than I expected, it worked and the crowd was into it. This was a fine way to kick off the show.
The Big Show defeated The Undertaker: Big Show vs. Undertaker was a match that had strong build from the last PPV to this PPV. The main thing I enjoyed was that there was no one else involved in this. Vickie was not seen, no Edge Guys, no Chavo, no Bam; just Show and Taker. They got the right amount of time, they both worked hard and they kept a good pace. Show is a different guy from his last run with the company and really got to show it here. Taker, while banged up brought his A-Game and what we ended up with was a good match. I dug the finish with Show removing the turnbuckle pad, using two KTFO shots, and then to be a super sized dick, punching Taker in the back if the head while he was already out for the stoppage. In the end I felt that this was a smartly worked big man vs. big man match. Big Show needed the win here for credibility because he has been in limbo as of late. He also got to return to dominating form here. I feel with Taker rarely losing on PPV, let alone being dominated in this fashion that this was a big win here. Of course the follow up will be key and I am not sure hw they proceed, but I liked the match and I also dug the finish, because I felt that it was not only executed well, but made Show out to be a PRICK and a beast.
WWE TITLE MATCH:I really, really liked this match. HHH played a great subtle heel here, not too much but just enough to get the right heat on him when he had control but not too much to make them hate him, because that isn’t the goal as of now. Also, as you would expect, when HHH is on he is on and he did that here by using a great mix of Ric Flair and Harley Race. This was his best singles performance in a while, since Night of Champions to be sure. I feel that this was fantastic match that doesn’t hurt Hardy in the loss, and it is also something that they can play off of as he continues his journey. You can lose, but it is HOW you lose that matters. Jeff lost because of a delay in pinning and because HHH is “The cerebral assassin.” He was “this close” one more time, but looked awesome. Again, this was fantastic stuff, on par with their last major one on one PPV match, which I also liked a lot. Jeff has matured and with the right person, HHH right now, he is working smart, main event matches. These guys have a great chemistry, and if Jeff ever gets the ball, we should look forward to more great matches between these guys.
WORLD TITLE MADDER MATCH: If there has been one feud I have thoroughly enjoyed it has been the Chris Jericho vs. HBK feud. They have had great promos and have delivered in the ring, and now they were taking the next step into a ladder match. Jericho, who has had much success in the match and HBK, the man that revolutionized the match on the big time stage. And if their past history together wasn’t enough, it was for the world title. When it was all said and done, I though this was an awesome main event, carried by two guys that have been doing some excellent work with just about anything they get involved with. They worked hard, and considering that HBK is still recovering from the torn triceps and is pretty much falling apart, he is simply amazing. They kept the crowd, the repeat spots were kept to a minimum and it worked. The suplex spot on the floor and CRAZY/STUPID bump Jericho took to the floor were very memorable, but I will say that the Cade-a-ferance took a bit away for me, even though I knew it was coming. This was just more goodness from these two, who had to deliver since a lot of the early stuff on the PPV didn’t. The back-to-back main events on this show are something I think people need to check out and as soon as possible.

Rey Mysterio defeated Kane: I will say that overall the match was not “bad,” actually I felt that they were working the big vs. little formula pretty well, especially with such a size difference. I though both guys looked good worked hard and looked better than they had in some time. But I was completely turned off by the DQ finish, and that is WWE’s fault. The company forced themselves into this finish by announcing a mask stipulation 6-days before the PPV. That was a huge mistake. First of all they didn’t get to promote the stipulation at ALL. It was virtually blown off on Raw. Secondly, the feud is fresh, just beginning, WHY would you jump to the stipulation so soon? It made no sense, and felt like a TNA move, having a stipulation just to have one. This match should have been a pathway to the mask match, not the match itself. With that being said, I came away disappointed and not wanting to see another match in the feud.
WWE WOMEN’S TITLE MATCH: While I don’t think Candice is great by any means, she and Beth do have a certain chemistry that works pretty well. Unfortunately there were some things that didn’t work here tonight that hurt the match. First of all I felt Candice was off tonight. Nothing bad, but just a little and that hurt things. Secondly they seemed to want to make things more about Beth and Santino rather than the ladies and the title. And finally going into that, they just didn’t get enough time to work. I am sorry, but 4½ minutes on PPV for a title match just doesn’t do it for me. It was far from horrible, but I really didn’t see anything good from it either.
WORLD TITLE #1 Contender’s Match/After Match: After all the hype they put into this, there really wasn’t much of a match. They went out there, they did some stuff, Batista fired up and he won in 5-minutes, clean. On one hand I guess it was good that it was short, likely JBL’s back is still bothering him badly, and they didn’t want to do a long match due to the suck factor involved. This also makes Batista look dominant as he beat him so quickly. But if they were going to make it that short they should have just had Batista destroy JBL, I mean run through him like a bad taco. The way they did it wasn’t very effective because it was like they threw a 12-minute match in the dryer, resulting in what we saw. If you’re going to go short, have JBL come out cheat, get some heat, and then let Batista run through him “WARRIOR, WARRIOR” style for the win. So while I didn’t really dig that, I will give credit for JBL trying to save the segment. His “My heart wasn’t in it” promo was fantastic, and the whole deal about him loving life due to the bail out package worked well. The thing is if they just do that after the match I am rather satisfied, we’re in purgatory with a relatively strong segment. But they couldn’t resist themselves and had to go Monday Night Raw on us with the Cryme Tyme follow up. Why? To get all of these people on PPV! ARGH! Stop it. Less is more. It’s like they baked the cake, put icing on it, added the roses and “Happy Birthday JBL” and then they decided to add 134 more icing roses on it. CHILL.
KILLING TIME: MVP, Orton, Rhodes, Manu, DiBiase, Punk, Kofi: I really dislike when WWE treats a PPV like an edition of Raw. I don’t pay $40 for long interview segments, and this shit was the definition of killing time. Some people will defend this and say that it is such a great thing to get all of these guys on PPV. But these are the same people that will complain when TNA overloads a show to “get all of these guys on PPV.” You can’t have it both ways, I hate when TNA doe sit and I disliked this. The long interview segment that they had, while fine, was screaming “WE ARE KILLING TIME!” With the #1 Contender’s and Women’s Match going short, they decided to just throw shit out there. When I take a look at this segment, the ladies match and the #1 contender’s match, these were the things in the show that really pulled it down for me. Pulled it down to the “Raw/SD” level. It felt like something I could have tuned into see any Monday or Friday, and I don’t like that feeling when I am PAYING for the event. Ass into it that the crowd HATED it and were chanting boring during this and I am apparently not alone here. I really wish they would have added more match time or video packages instead of this shit, because I hate when a PPV begins to feel like a $40 Raw.
Overall I will go with a 7.5 out of 10 for the event and a recommendation to see the final two matches. While it had a slow start and some stuff I didn’t like, this PPV was similar in ways to the ROH New Horizons PPV as the ending half (Show vs. Taker, HHH vs. Jeff and HBK vs. Jericho) was outstanding. For those that criticize PPV for not delivering great wrestling on PPV, know your role and calm down because they did so here. It isn’t a perfect PPV, far from it, but I think it was worth the price; because of the two main events.
