411 Roundtable Preview: WWE Hell in a Cell 2014
Introduction
This year’s edition of WWE Hell in a Cell, is highlighted by two Hell in a Cell matches that have two entirely different levels of expectations. One match seems to be what the entire wrestling world is ready to see with Dean Ambrose taking on Seth Rollins. The other match is something many wrestling fans would rather forget existed in a WWE Championship # 1 Contender’s Match between John Cena and Randy Orton. Emanating from my hometown of Dallas, Texas this year’s Hell in Cell is very rematch heavy, but at least with the absence of the WWE Champion all the other WWE titles are being defended on this PPV. AJ Lee once again takes on Paige for the Divas Championship, The Usos meet Goldust and Stardust for another shot at the Tag Team Titles, and we even the two singles midcard champions switching opponents too, including what looks to be a stellar 2 out of 3 Falls Intercontinental Championship Match between Dolph Ziggler and Cesaro. This PPV has the potential to either really deliver or perhaps only be a one match show, but at least we should get one hell of a contest with that one match. So, I think that’s enough rambling from me, let’s get to what the entire staff think of this PPV.

Rusev w/ Lana vs. Big Show
Singles Match
Justin Watry: Rusev has no reason to lose. Big Show has no reason to win. The Mark Henry heel turn on Sunday may seem predictable, but as I have covered 287,498 times already, predictability is NOT a bad thing! It just means you are following a logical path and not having RIkishi run down Stone Cold…because SWERVE!!! We fooled you!!!! The long payoff for Rusev is either a money showdown at WrestleMania 31 with John Cena or some kind of Olympic Gold Medalist returning to defend the USA. Either way. None of that includes losing to Big Show at the Heck on a Deck pay-per-view. Clean or not, Mark Henry interference or not, Rusev will crush. Lana too. She always wins.
Winner: Rusev
Paul Leazar: I got pretty interested in this after their match they had RAW two weeks ago. These two put on a heck of a match, and if this one is even half as good as that match, we’ll be just fine. I also think Mark Henry turns here to cost Big Show the match. I’m still holding out hope that The New Nation of Domination is still in the cards, and I think Mark feeling that the whole country turned on him for the next thing, Big Show, would be the perfect excuse to create his own Nation to back him. Mark beats Big Show around, Rusev tosses Show into the Accolade, and gets the tap out.
Winner: Rusev
Wyatt Beougher: I still feel like this is just Rusev continuing his Umaga build for the eventual burial at the hands of Cena (which will probably happen at either Survivor Series or TLC, to make number one contender Cena look like a threat to Lesnar), so look for Rusev to take some damage in this one before locking in the Accolade for the win.
Winner: Rusev via Accolade
Gary Vaughan: A lot of folks are expecting Mark Henry to turn heel and cause Big Show to lose this match. I can see that scenario, but it doesn’t matter either way cause Big Show is gonna lose. It’s well thought that Rusev is headed for a bigger matchup and he will not be defeated until that time comes. Let’s just say Lana will be leaving Dallas with a smile on her face.
Winner: Rusev via Accolade
Daniel Anderson: If Mark Henry couldn’t beat Rusev, I do not see Big Show beating him either, at least not here. I honestly see them throwing Rusev against Cena after Cena gets his third match with Brock so Show will come close, but Rusev ends up the winner.
Winner: Rusev
Michael Weyer: They’re obviously continuing the monster build for Rusev before it inevitably ends badly so it should be a good battle but rather obvious who get the win in the end.
Winner: RUSEV SMASH!
Mike Hammerlock: I really wish the WWE had the balls to let Rusev tear down the American flag. That would have been stupendous. The whole bit with the fake soldier jumping into the ring and getting kicked in the head was a little too contrived. First off, I’m highly in favor of wrestlers dismembering any maniac from the crowd who storms the ring. I don’t care if the maniac’s chest is covered in distinguished service medals or if it’s a priest or if it’s someone’s grandma. That motherfucker deserved to get dropped. Second, Big Show did tear down the Russian flag a few weeks back. I’ve got no problem with that, but, despite Show’s phenomenal selling of his anger over the soldier kicking incident, it bugs me when the face/heel line involves a glaring double standard. The good news is Rusev and Show have dynamite ring chemistry. Their first two encounters were some of the best stuff the WWE has done in recent months (minus Show and Mark Henry ganging up on Rusev after the second match, which was another case of faces acting like heels). Ultimately Show isn’t going to be the guy who beats Rusev, but so far this has been an entertaining stop on Rusev’s monster build. Side note: too bad Rusev is being pretend Russian instead of Bulgarian at the moment. I’d love to see him parading around in a Ludogorets Razgrad jersey.
Winner: Rusev
Alex Crowder: My only hope for this match is that Henry does not interfere. Rusev deserves a clean victory over Big Show. This would be probably the biggest victory of Rusev’s career. If WWE is smart they have Rusev win in a hard fought contest. I know not everyone loves Rusev, but I can’t fault a man that sells a leg injury beyond what is expected (seriously, how many other wrestlers ruined a match by not selling a leg injury at all!). Rusev sells awesomely for a big powerful dude and he has impressive athleticism. I think Rusev is a little different from the usual hosses pushed, and they should do the right thing with a clean Rusev victory. Henry if he must turn heel can do so after Rusev’s moment in the sun.
Winner: Rusev
Sean Garmer: WWE has done a masterful job of making this feud way more interesting than it ever should have been. That being said, WWE should take that and promptly end the feud here with a Rusev victory that sees him barely escape, but without interference from Lana or Mark Henry. I think you can tell the same story after the match with Henry and Big Show getting into it because Big Show couldn’t beat Rusev either. Big Show then gets upset and they start going at it leading to whatever that is going to be. This will be Rusev’s biggest win to date and it doesn’t need to be in a cheap manner. It seems like he could be heading towards a match with Sheamus next, I hope so at least.
Winner: Rusev (via Accolade)
Nikki Bella vs. Brie Bella
Singles Match- Loser Becomes the other’s servant for one month
Justin Watry: *sigh* Truthfully, I did not want Nikki Bella to turn heel at Summerslam. I did not want to see the Bellas feud. The fact that this is guaranteed to last another 30 days is not a good thought. Lucky for us, WWE has pulled back in recent weeks with these two, so it is not wasting THAT much time on television anymore. For a positive, Nikki and Brie Bella have improved big time over the years, so if they want to prove me wrong, please do so. Nikki win to make life for Brie a living heck until Survivor Series.
Winner: Nikki Bella
Paul Leazar: This match is geared for Nikki to win so this feud can keep going, but I think we’ve all seen enough of this because the WWE killed this feud with the booking pretty soon after it all got started. Nikki wins with her Torture Rack backbreaker thing.
Winner: Nikki Bella
Wyatt Beougher: I was really hoping that this gimmick died with the Attitude Era, because there’s never really been a truly good story told as a result of it, and it always brings back memories of Brian Pillman, who died in the midst of one of these “servant for a month” angles. And honestly, how quickly has this angle fallen? From being billed/promoted as a co-main event at Summerslam where we saw Nikki’s “shocking” turn to getting one of the least interesting gimmicks the WWE could opt to go with. At any rate, Nikki has gotten shockingly competent in the ring (with the right opponents anyway), but I don’t expect this match to be particularly good, and if you’ve seen Total Divas, you’ll know that Brie basically does whatever Nikki wants anyway, as it’s the only way to shut her up. Look for that to happen in an official capacity for the next month, and my prediction is that one or both sisters is going to throw “bitch” at the other one quite often during that time.
Winner: Nikki Bella via Rack Attack
Gary Vaughan: Unlike the AJ Lee vs Paige match, there is a great reason for Nikki to be victorious in this match. This storyline is weak, but at least we have a solid direction coming out of this match. I think Stephanie McMahon will get involved, leading to Nikki getting the win. This should pish Nikki into a better place as a heel if this happens.
Winner: Nikki Bella
Daniel Anderson: Nikki wins, probably with some type of interference to cost Brie right after she gets the upper hand in the match. Yawn.
Winner: Nikki Bella
Michael Weyer: Sigh. Do I have to care about this? Ah, well, pick Nikki as we’re sure to have “fun” for weeks of videos of them in whacky antics to continue this ugly feud.
Winner: Nikki Bella
Mike Hammerlock: Does the face ever win this kind of match? The whole point of this stip is to have the evil one in the feud humiliate the good one, setting up the good one’s righteous revenge later on. Brie Bella has no chance in this match. She’s probably losing thanks to copious amounts of cheating or via screwjob. Side question: does the stip only count if you win via pinfall or submission or does it apply to countout and DQ situations as well? I really don’t know. They might have explained it, but I’ve taken to flipping the channel when they air the segments for this feud (or breezing past it on my DVR).
Winner: Nikki Bella
Alex Crowder: I don’t wish to be mean, and I’ll give credit where it is due. The Bella Twins have improved a lot since they first came to WWE. However, that doesn’t mean much. These two don’t have much chemistry as opponents and I’m just not that interested. I’ll say Nikki wins to keep the feud going.
Winner: Nikki Bella
Sean Garmer: Everyone has pretty much summed up this match. Nikki should win setting up a reason for Brie to get pissed at her throughout the 30 days of this servitude. I have a feeling we will see Stephanie get involved here to rub it in even more to the fans.
Winner: Nikki Bella (interference from Stephanie, which leads to Rack Attack for the pin)
(Champion) Sheamus vs. The Miz
United States Championship Match
Justin Watry: Sheamus is solid as usual in his role on the show. I think some fans are just waiting for him to turn heel and revamp his character, and that is understandable. For how, he just goes in the ring and kicks some serious butt. From bell to bell, he never disappoints. For The Miz, he is the latest wrestler to flip/flop from feuding over the United States Championship to the Intercontinental Championship. As if the belts actually matter, right? Since The Celtic Warrior has done so well during 2014 (no sarcasm), I will predict he is victorious here. His long awaited heel turn may have to wait until 2015. Even if you are not too invested in the outcome here, Damien Mizdow should provide some entertainment outside the ring.
Winner: Sheamus
B>Paul Leazar: The only really interesting part of this match will be what Damien Mizdow is doing on the outside, and if he tries to step in for the Miz or interfere on his part and loses the match for him. Other than that, Sheamus (as much I really like the guy) has been pretty bland due to nothing happening for him story wise. Either way, Sheamus retains via Brogue Kick and he can move on to his feud with Rusev.
Winner and STILL WWE United States Champion: Sheamus
Wyatt Beougher: It’s a shameful thing…that it’s not Mizdow challenging for the title in this match, as he’s been consistently more entertaining than the Miz since the gimmick first started. On the bright side, he’ll at least be at ringside to add another level of entertainment to this match. If I were booking this thing, I’d put Miz over and then turn that into a breakup and feud with Sandow when he won’t give the US title back to the Miz after a title defense, while moving Sheamus into a short program with Rusev to give the Bulgarian Brute another win over a former champion before he loses to Cena (well, if I were booking it, that wouldn’t be the only end result for Rusev, but I digress…). Since this is the WWE, though, I see this going one of two ways – either Sheamus Brogue Kicks Miz for the win, or Sheamus Brogue Kicks Mizdow off of the apron in an attempt to kick the Miz, which allows the Miz to roll him up and steal the win. Since I picked Cesaro to win the Intercontinental title, I’ll go with the first scenario (though it’s entirely possible that Sheamus kicks Miz AND Mizdow to get the win).
Winner and STILL WWE UNITED STATES CHAMPION: Sheamus via Brogue Kick.
Gary Vaughan: Sheamus has been on a hot streak as of late and I believe it will not end here. The Miz will have tricks up his sleeve, but I think Damien Mizdow will cause it all to blow up in his face. Whether it be by accident pr by crook, I think The Miz will be the one more upset at Mizdow rather than the guy that just beat him down by the end of this one.
Winner: Sheamus
Daniel Anderson: Is anyone really excited about this match? Anyway, WWE is hell bent on pushing Miz, and Mizdow is actually funny, so look for some unseen by the ref Mizdow interference for Miz to take the belt.
Winner and NEW United States Champion: The Miz
Michael Weyer: Pity about Sheamus, the guy’s been stuck for a while and unlikely that’ll change anytime soon. Damien’s presence gives the match more interest, seeing what side he falls on and that can add a dimension to things. Still, I see his interference, one way or another, to work against Miz, allow Sheamus to hit a Brogue Kick and get the pin and hopefully some better challenges to come.
Winner and STILL US Champion: Sheamus
Mike Hammerlock: Unlike most of the rest of the card, this match actually has gotten a respectable build. The Mizdow factor has helped this feud stand out with some comedy that actually works. Miz’s reaction to Mizdow’s pin of Sheamus on Monday was priceless. We’re surely going to get some shenanigans in this match and that’s perfectly acceptable because shenanigans make sense in this feud. Sheamus has been an entertaining kickass champion. He’s been like the Good Wrestling Seal of Approval for all of 2014. If you see Sheamus in the ring, then a quality match is about to go off. Logically, you don’t want to flush that away by having him drop to someone who overwhelms him in the ring. He’s one of the strong hands on the roster and you want to keep him that way. Far better for him to drop the belt to sneaky tricks or in a surprise. I’m guessing it will be the latter, which means Mizdow takes the belt farther down the road and perhaps Miz tries to apply the Freebird transitive property in claiming a Mizdow win makes him the champ. That would open up all kinds of fun possibilities, including a three-way dance at Survivor Series.
Winner: Sheamus
Alex Crowder: Sheamus has been on fire as of late. Sheamus isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, yet he gets the job done. Sheamus is a forgotten model of consistency to quote Stephen A. Smith. Sheamus might not be the flashiest wrestler. Still, he consistently has decent outings. Sheamus won’t have the match of the night, but he’ll try his damndest to make us care about the match. I’m not sure if he’ll succeed because of the black hole that is Miz…but we have Damien Mizdow to entertain us. This should be a decent and un-spectacular match. I just hope that Damien Mizdow is on the outside, because it’ll be worthwhile.
Winner: Sheamus
Sean Garmer: WWE has obviously been having Sheamus lose a lot to Miz or Mizdow so that it seems like Miz has a shot against Sheamus. The fact is, it is merely the power of illusion because we all know Miz has no shot here. I see Mizdow trying to interfere on Miz’s behalf, but somehow he screws up and it leads to a Brogue Kick and a win for Sheamus.
Winner AND STILL UNITED STATES CHAMPION: Sheamus (Mizdow interference backfires, which leads to Brogue Kick)
(Champions) Gold & Stardust vs. The Usos
Tag Team Championship Match
Justin Watry: Stardust is still the worst thing on all of WWE TV. I will care again when CODY RHODES is back and not a moment sooner. Yet another match with The Usos is also not helping things here. NXT sure could supply the main roster with a new diva and a new tag team. That would be wonderful right now. I give the nod to the heels here, sadly. However, I refuse to pick Stardust.
Winner: The Usos
Paul Leazar: I’m hesitant to pick Double Dust here because the WWE has let them win a whole two matches since they won the belts. We know these guys work well together, so the match should still be good. Hopefully these guys get more time to build a feud after this because just sticking them in the midcard feud six man match every week just won’t cut it anymore. Stardust gets the fall with Dark Matter.
Winner and STILL WWE World Tag Team Champions: Double Dust
Wyatt Beougher: Can we please call up the Ascension already? They can’t hang with either of these teams in the ring, but at least it wouldn’t be a match that we’ve seen at what feels like the last forty-six shows in a row (or at least the last forty-six shows where the WWE actually remembered that they have a tag team division). This match is the in-ring equivalent of the seemingly endless Dust Brothers “trapped in a dark room” promos – they were fun and unique at first, but the repetition ad nauseum has killed any initial excitement that I had for them. They should’ve just put the straps on Rowan and Harper in the 2 of 3 Falls match when they had the chance.
Winner and STILL WWE TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS: Gold and Stardust via Dark Matter
Gary Vaughan: I’m not sure if we are going to get a better match than we’ve seen from these two teams in the past, but I do expect a quality match for certain. The Dust brothers should retain their tag titles. The only way I see the belts moving back to the Usos, is if WWE wants to be like a politician and flip flop title holders.
Winner: Goldust & Stardust
Daniel Anderson: Remember back when we were optimistic about the Tag Belts starting to mean something again? For me at least that feeling is gone. They just feel like afterthoughts again. I am going to say The Usos lose here, just because I feel that Goldust & Stardust still have more in their run before it is over.
Winner and STILL WWE World Tag Team Champions: Goldust & Stardust
Michael Weyer: I still get the feeling WWE has more planned in singles for Cody but they did just win the belts so hard to see them dropping again so fast. The Usos are a great pair and these guys can work together so expect a fair enough match before the champs retain. Just makes me wish they’d get the Acension up from NXT already to really make the belts catch fire.
Winners and STILL WWE Tag Team Champions: Goldust and Stardust
Mike Hammerlock: These are two of the best tag teams the WWE has had in ages and Creative refuses to give either one a storyline. The Usos are all-action faces and the Dust Brothers are batshit crazy, and that’s as far as it goes. They’re fighting because … well, because there isn’t another serious contending tag team in the WWE. We’re not seeing any progression in this feud. The stakes aren’t getting raised. They started off fighting standard matches for the belts and they’re still fighting standard matches for the belts. I keep hoping this whole thing is leading to a TLC match that blows our minds, but right now these two teams seem to be marking time. From a wrestling perspective, I’m happy that they’re facing each other because I love what all four of these guys do in the ring. I think most everyone is going to enjoy this match, but this hasn’t been built or presented as the big deal it could be. That’s a shame, because these teams really should be having a feud which sets a new bar for the division.
Winner: The Dust Brothers
Alex Crowder: These two have decent chemistry and make for a good match up. My only gripe is that we’ve seen this match a number of times, so I expect a good but forgettable match. I’ll enjoy the hell out of it when I see it, but I probably won’t remember any of the spots in the match…a year from now. Nevertheless, these two will put on an entertaining match. For now, I’ll say that The Dust Brothers keep the momentum and live another day as champions. Regardless, I still see the Ascension dominating whoever the champions are in the near future.
Winner: Goldust and Stardust
Sean Garmer: If we hadn’t seen these two teams together in SO MANY DAMN MATCHES lately, I would be more excited for this. The match should be good to very good and I’m hoping Dust Brothers retain and this leads to a stipulation match for them at TLC or something. If there is something the tag division needs right now is SOMETHING to spice it up because the six man tag replays are getting old.
Winners AND STILL TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS: Dust Brothers (via Stardust finisher)
(Champion) AJ Lee vs. Paige
Divas Championship Match
Justin Watry: AJ Lee vs. Paige again? Fine by me. I have said for months now that I will happily take a year long feud with these two. Need I remind you all of the AJ Lee vs. Total Divas story line last year? Give me AJ/Paige rematches every month over that any day of the week. This could go either way on Sunday. The rumor surrounding the Divas Championship and Total Divas is bogus, so that does not play into the decision whatsoever. The reason the cast has never been champ is because…well, look at the cast. There is your reason! Yet, grab that spoon and scoop it up. What really matters is when the next diva from NXT is getting called up. Charlotte feuding with AJ Lee come WrestleMania 31 season seems fair enough. Paige can be ‘besties’ with Ms. Alicia Fox, while plotting her next move to take down champ AJ.
Winner: AJ Lee
Paul Leazar: With the way this feud has been booked, and as much as these two have traded the belt back and forth, I haven’t a clue what to expect here. Paige could walk out with the belt here after some Alicia Fox shenanigans, AJ could finally find a friend that she approves of who butts into the match. Either way, I’m going with AJ Lee to retain via Shining Wizard.
Winner and STILL WWE Diva’s Champion: AJ Lee
Wyatt Beougher: Since Nikki/Brie will likely fulfill the story portion of the Divas action this month, let’s hope that the match for the Divas title actually fulfills the wrestling portion. On paper, this looked like the best possible feud that the WWE could have booked upon AJ’s return, but it is my personal feeling that she and Paige just haven’t clicked. Don’t get me wrong – it’s still light years better than what we were getting prior to AJ’s departure, but I guess my expectations were just unrealistically high for this feud. I feel like this could go one of two ways – either it’s going to a straightforward match, which will be good, or we’ll get all sorts of outside nonsense involving Alicia Fox or whoever that will drag the whole thing down. I’m hoping for the former, but I’m prepared for the latter. And, since this is Paige’s month to hold the belt, look for her to pick up the win (which will also prove Stephanie McMahon Helmsley’s claim earlier this week that there isn’t a “no Total Divas” rule for the Divas championship).
Winner and NEW WWE DIVAS CHAMPION: Paige via RamPaige
Gary Vaughan: Who knows what we will get out of this match , but I do know we will get some humor out of this match for sure. I hope that humor is from intended jokes and not the match being the laughable part. We all hope this match lives up to its potential. Saying that, AJ should retain because there really is no good reason for Paige to be champion after such a weak storyline.
Winner: AJ Lee
Daniel Anderson: This feud has been back and forth month after month. That makes me think that once someone wins twice in a row, the feud will be over. I do not see WWE ending the feud at this point so I see Paige somehow winning here.
Winner and NEW WWE Diva’s Champion: Paige
Michael Weyer: These two are really clicking well, giving the Divas title more heat than it’s had in a while. Tricky to pick given how they’ve bounced the belt around but both women are great workers with Paige blossoming more and AJ of course fantastic. I think they’ll keep it on AJ this time out and move on to newer challenges with the other Divas but either way, this feud is a great thing by WWE lately and nice to see the ladies get their due.
Winner and STILL Divas Champion: AJ Lee
Mike Hammerlock: I don’t get what’s going on with this feud. Theoretically these are two women who could deliver an actual good match. They may have one on Sunday, though we’ve been given no indication that such a match is forthcoming. For the most part we’ve been treated to the standard 90-second divas garbage. I went on record a few weeks ago with my opinion that AJ and Paige should have fought inside a cell. Had they gone in that direction, I think it would have earned the divas division much-needed respect. Instead we’re here and I’m barely even sure of where here is. In the end, I think, AJ wins this feud because she seems the surer bet to be involved with a higher profile WrestleMania match in less than six months time. If so, then my guess is Paige won’t be getting the title back until she undergoes some serious repackaging.
Winner: AJ Lee
Alex Crowder: This one is difficult for me to speak objectively because I love me some Paige. I was disappointed when Paige lost the Championship last time. I’m hoping that WWE puts the title back on Paige where it belongs. In all seriousness, this match will probably be better than last month. These two are developing better chemistry with every match. In addition, it is Paige and AJ, and at their worst the match is decent. I’ll take that any day of the week. This should be fun to watch and this feud could continue for the rest of the year like Ambrose and Rollins…I would never complain.
Winner: Paige
Sean Garmer: This feud has been going on for a while and even though it is seriously in need of more development aside from “hey let’s cost someone a match this week, or let’s attack them after the match.” WWE knew this feud would be going on for a long while and I don’t understand why they couldn’t have planned for things to escalate long term into something. Hopefully the Divas are given time to put on a good match here, but whatever happens here doesn’t really matter because this feud will continue on to Survivor Series regardless because we already know Brie vs. Nikki is getting a Total Divas Survivor Series Elimination Match. It seems WWE has something going more with AJ than Paige at the moment, so I’d say AJ retains here.
Winner AND STILL DIVAS CHAMPION: AJ Lee (Via Shining Wizard)
(Champion) Dolph Ziggler vs. Cesaro
2 out of 3 Falls Intercontinental Championship Match
Justin Watry: Here is your monthly “Cesaro challenges for a mid-card title and loses” pay-per-view match. We have been seeing those for months now, and I refuse to fall for it. If WWE wanted him to hold a title, he would have won a title the week after his alliance with Paul Heyman. Remember being a Paul Heyman Guy? That nonsense? Yet, he lost, then lost some more, and this Sunday – I expect one more loss for a mid-card title match. I do not read Smackdown spoilers, so writing this on Wednesday and seeing it is two out of three falls surely is a welcome surprise. Certainly better than a normal bout. Dolph Ziggler will surely deliver in the squared circle at Heck on a Deck, and if this thing gets time due to stipulation, it could be great. Champ retains.
Winner: Dolph Ziggler
Paul Leazar: This match could really steal the show if this gets enough time. These two guys know how to work, and if there was going to be a title change on this show, it would be this one. With the way the card sits right now, pushing Cesaro would be a terrific idea and this could be a good start to that, but Ziggler with the championship just seems to fit how lazy the WWE is booking right now. Either way, we all win with this match up. Ziggler gets the win with a Zig Zag.
Winner and STILL WWE Intercontinental Champion: Dolph Ziggler
Wyatt Beougher: Cesaro was one-half of the best two out of three falls matches we saw last year, and while this lacks some of the build up that his match with Sami Zayn had, as Ziggler isn’t an “up and comer” trying to prove himself to Cesaro, Cesaro has been on-point in interviews about bringing the Intercontinental Title to Europe, so at least there’s that. Well, that, and the fact that this match should be insanely good. Dolph is at his best when he’s got a bigger opponent who he can pinball off of, and Cesaro should be more than happy to toss him around, European uppercut him to death, and make Dolph’s offense (which should mostly be hope spots) seem compelling. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if this one plays out just like Cesaro/Zayn did, with Dolph taking the first fall with a ZigZag FROM OUTTA NOWHERE!, followed by Cesaro taking two straight to win the match and the IC title.
Winner and NEW WWE INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPION: Cesaro (Fall 1 – Ziggler via ZigZag, Fall 2 – Cesaro via Swiss Death, Fall 3 – Cesaro via Neutralizer)
Gary Vaughan: I fully expect this match to be a contender for match of the night. There will be false pinfalls, great highspots, and of course some superb athleticism in this 2 out of 3 bout. Ziggler never is allowed to hold a title very long; si sadly I think Cesaro walks out IC champion. Don’t get me wrong I love Cesaro, but Ziggler is up there in my book as well.
Winner: Cesaro
Daniel Anderson: This is my candidate for best match of the night. If WWE gives this match enough time, we could see a possible MOTYC. I think this is Cesaro’s chance to finally get a title after the Paul Heyman disaster.
Winner and NEW WWE Intercontinental Champion: Cesaro
Michael Weyer: Tricky to pick a winner here given how they’ve been trading the belt back and forth and really could go either way. Cesaro has a bit more heat to him but Ziggler seems capable as champion so a win by him can move on to new challenges. Still, I think WWE will finally blow this feud off with Cesaro winning in a third fall and maybe give the belt some stability in the future while paying off on his promise.
Winner and NEW IC Champion: Cesaro
Mike Hammerlock: All right, this quite possibly steals the show. These two guys in this match is a dream come true for wrestling fans. How they got here is completely fucked up. After Night of Champions, Ziggler won back the Intercontinental title and went on a short winning streak that had crowds popping like crazy for him. It seemed like finally the WWE was going to give us an IC champ we could believe in. Then it turned on a dime and Ziggler apparently is back on the J.O.B. Squad. Meanwhile Cesaro shifted from being the #1 contender for the U.S. belt to the #1 contender for the IC belt, with Miz going in the other direction. This really is starting to feel like a key party. So we find ourselves on the brink of a match that should be something special, but it hasn’t been built like something special. Winning this match might be the worst thing for either of these guys as it likely means they spend the next month jobbing to the rest of the roster. It all adds up to absolute quality wrapped inside a big ball of nonsense. Who wins? Could be either guy, there’s no wrong choice. I’m picking Cesaro because he’s gone a long time without a belt.
Winner: Cesaro
Alex Crowder: No matter what happens in this match, I’m alright with it taking place. Can any of us really complain about Cesaro throwing Ziggler around? These two have decent chemistry and their styles fit each other perfectly. Cesaro is an awesome powerful hitter and Ziggler bumps like no other. This will be good even if they sleepwalk through the match. Also, this has the potential to be great if they both put their all into it. I expect this to entertain me and that’s enough for me. I see Ziggler retaining in this instance.
Winner: Dolph Ziggler
Sean Garmer: Now this is something I am really looking forward to here. Dolph and Cesaro have the ability to produce magic in this 2 out of 3 Falls match that could quite possibly steal the show. I love Dolph, but as we’ve seen with his recent losses, WWE seems to be losing interest in him and with the roster as thin as it is, it might be time to begin elevating Cesaro. I don’t think there is a better way to do it than by him winning the IC belt after an epic match. The match is between two guys that some in WWE like and some in WWE seem to have no clue what to do with when it comes to character development. Regardless, this should be awesome. If there is one belt that will change hands on this PPV, I feel like this will be the one for some reason.
WINNER AND NEW INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPION: Cesaro (Cesaro wins first fall with Very European Uppercut, Dolph wins second fall with Zig Zag, Cesaro wins final fall with Neutralizer)
John Cena vs. Randy Orton
WWE Championship # 1 Contender’s Hell in a Cell Match
Justin Watry: Thanks to the #1 contenders announcement on Monday night, there is some actual intrigue here. A thrown together John Cena vs. Randy Orton match inside the cell? No thanks. A thrown together John Cena vs. Randy Orton match inside the cell for a future WWE World Championship match against Brock Lesnar? Now we have something to care about. As cool and hip it is to suddenly care about Mr. RKO (not me, I always have cared about his on screen character and praised him), he is in the middle of a face turn. Would a match (and loss) versus Brock Lesnar really help that along? My guess is no. Let Cena win on Sunday before falling to Brock in the blowoff to that feud. Still some unfinished business from Night of Champions. I am tempted to pick Orton just because he has never faced Brock since they became big stars, but logic says Cena is the favorite at Heck on a Deck. So tempted to go with Orton though. So tempted.
Winner: John Cena
Paul Leazar: #101TimesInALifetime. Randy Ortons wins via RKO, the crowd goes mild. Moving on.
Winner and NEW #1 Contender to the WWE World Heavyweight Champion: Randy Orton
Wyatt Beougher: Here’s hoping that the fans crap all over this match like we did the iteration of it that we saw at the Royal Rumble earlier this year. When your number one contender to your Intercontinental Title is calling you out publicly for booking the same match for the 500th time (and I personally think Cesaro’s estimate might have been a little conservative), maybe it’s time to actually throw out that whiteboard with Cena vs Orton in Sharpie at the top of it and try something new. Not only did I not like the explanation given for why this was a number one contender’s match [from Rollins’ perspective, it actually makes sense, as he’s Loki and knows he can’t take out the Hulk (Lesnar), so he wants Cap (Cena) or Ronan (Orton) to do it – and yes, Big Dave is still Drax in this analogy somehow, but Cena still JUST lost to Ambrose, dammit], but the Ambrose/Rollins match has more heat going into it and could benefit more from being the main event. Nice job building your future stars, WWE. At any rate, this is Orton vs Cena – if you don’t know what you’re getting by this point, you haven’t been watching the WWE for literally the last decade. Since Orton won at Royal Rumble (and TLC for that matter), Cena gets his win back here so that he can, in turn, get his win back on Brock. Hooray.
Winner: John Cena via Attitude Adjustment
Gary Vaughan: Most would or will pick John Cena to win this match but I can’t do it. Not just cause I have no interest in Brock/Cena 3 but because I think we will get that match later on down the road. Orton will find a way to win and Cena will be forced to find another way to the title.
Winner: Randy Orton
Daniel Anderson: Do we really need another Cena vs Orton match? This just feels like lazy booking, but we are stuck with it so whatever. I see Cena winning this just because he still needs his third match with Brock to end the feud (although where they go with Brock afterwards I have no idea).
Winner #1 Contender to the WWE World Heavyweight Champion: John Cena
Michael Weyer: I know, there’s grousing over how many times we’ve seen this before but it’s still in a Cell and that adds a bit more to it. Whatever else, Orton and Cena bring it for big battles and that promises something pretty fun here. Expect plenty of hard hit and Orton to pull out yet another cool new way to hit the RKO as sounds like a face turn might be coming for him. We might even see some blood with the heat and the Cell and at least one crazy spot to get folks talking. Sure, Cena wins but at least makes it a battle as, while familiar, these guys are still capable of pulling out some good stuff to win you over.
Winner: John Cena
Mike Hammerlock: All right, it’s the match no one wanted. Lots to cover on this one. Let me start with baseball politics, because it encompasses why Cena’s such a shitty face. Yes, St. Louis’ Randy Orton came out and razzed Royals fans on Monday night. Kansas City does not exactly have a glorious sports history. This trip to the World Series is a rarity and Orton’s surely a Cardinals fan. Seeing that the Royals’ only World Series win involved the Cardinals getting screwed by a terrible umpiring call (which might be one of Randy Orton’s earliest memories), it makes sense that he’s no fan of the cross-state rivals. Meanwhile, John Cena’s pimping for the Royals. You gotta believe. Isn’t that just so cute and cuddly of him? Except that there’s this other team from San Francisco in the World Series too and its fans probably aren’t overly happy about Cena suddenly becoming a Royals fan for a cheap pop. Good luck winning over the crowd when WrestleMania 31 takes place in Santa Clara’s Levi’s Stadium home of … wait for it … the San Francisco 49ers. Survivor Series also takes place next month in St. Louis. John Cena, you sir are a genius. Even worse, where is Cena from? The Boston area, and he’s supposedly a Red Sox fan. Yet the dumbass has spent his entire career sucking up to the local sports teams in every city (including the Yankees), which is one of the primary reasons he gets showered with boos in his hometown. Forget about Seth Rollins being a kayfabe sellout. John Cena’s an actual pro sports fan sellout. That’s practically a mortal sin in modern America.
As for the match itself, Randy Orton still technically owns a WWE title rematch clause. He has yet to get a 1v1 rematch for the title that he never lost (Daniel Bryan pinned Batista at WrestleMania XXX). Does this mean Orton gets two title shots if he wins? Don’t hold your breath. We’re never going to get that answer. Clearly, if you’re a WWE fan and you’re paying attention, you’re doing it wrong. The whole thing stinks of a contrived way to get us to Cena-Lesnar IV, which I personally don’t need to see any time soon. It will only feel like reruns because it is and it’s not like we’re going to get a more conclusive finish if they have another match. I suppose it might keep Cena out of the Royal Rumble, which he otherwise never could possibly lose. Speaking of reruns, did the WWE forget about the reaction fans gave to Orton-Cena at the Royal Rumble? With the sound off it was a really good match, but fans wanted no part of it. I don’t see how anyone could expect a positive reaction to this thrown-together meeting. Meanwhile, Orton vs. Lesnar could be a hot affair. They haven’t fought since Orton was a rookie and Orton’s got the offensive firepower to give Lesnar a serious contest. Add in potential Orton-Rollins tensions and the popularity of the finest meme on the Internet (Randy Orton RKOing everyone on the planet) and that’s a really interesting direction for the WWE to take.
However, I can’t convince myself the WWE will pick the interesting direction over the John-Cena-sells-t-shirts direction. I don’t even know who to blame for that. Is it WWE Creative? Is it Vince McMahon? Is it the board of directors making demands because they think this will bolster shareholder value and appease Wall Street analysts? I can’t say. Some people are responsible for John Cena being shamelessly shoved down our throats and fuck those people. It certainly seems like Cena pays close attention to who has gotten the better of him in the past and it would seem this is a perfect chance to get back his HIAC 2009 loss to Orton, plus the recent TLC and Royal Rumble losses to Orton, and claim that he has now “won” their rivalry. Interesting how quickly Cena’s forgotten about his burning desire to get revenge upon Seth Rollins now that another title shot’s being dangled in front of him. It is possible Rollins could intervene for Orton and then Cena could botch an intervention for Ambrose. That would make some sense, but picking against Cena is usually a fool’s errand.
Winner: John Cena
Alex Crowder: The number 1 contender stipulation doesn’t add much for me since both are losers in a sense of their recent matches. I expect a John Cena win, and I think that is a horrendous idea. John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar V or VI does not interest me in the slightest. That’s just the honest truth, and a heel versus heel Orton vs. Lesnar match does intrigue me a lot more. Randy Orton has a bit of fire thanks to an online meme and he always tries his best. I think Orton is underrated like Sheamus. However, it will be hard to make the crowd care about a match that is happening for the hundredth time. I think regardless the fans would get into Lesnar and Orton because it’s fresh unlike Orton and Cena or Cena and Lesnar. Nonetheless, I expect them to pull the predictable move and move towards Lesnar and Cena V or VI whichever.
Winner: John Cena
Sean Garmer: Well, at least there is a little bit of intrigue here with the # 1 contender’s stipulation being added. However, it doesn’t mean I want to see this match again for the 101st time in history. I am not going to hold out any hopes that this will be anything but good, but who knows they might surprise us. Speaking of surprise, I hope WWE gives us a surprise and decides to let Randy Orton win here so that we can maybe get a face Orton against Brock at Survivor Series. I think there is more money in making us wait for a Brock vs. Cena 3 at Royal Rumble instead. Not to mention, with so many rematches happening lately, it would be nice to see something new in the main title scene for once.
Winner: Randy Orton (Via RKO)
Dean Ambrose vs. Seth Rollins
Hell in a Cell Match
Justin Watry: Here we go! For months, I have said a Dean Ambrose vs. Seth Rollins battle inside the cell would be a match of the year candidate. Well, the wait is over. I do not ask for much from WWE programming. Just have good matches and quality story lines, with special memorable moments mixed in from time to time – that is all I really ask for. Nothing specific or ‘fantasy booking’ wise with every little detail worked out. I could NOT care less about that stuff. All of that being said, I want Ambrose/Rollins to get 30 minutes on Sunday, with the deserved (final slot) main event spotlight, AND the chance to have a classic. Anything less than a match of the year bout from them will be considered a disappointment from me. No joke, I want THE 2014 match of the year from them on Sunday night and a classic bout to be remembered forever. The outcome is not even a real concern; I will predict Dean Ambrose but like I said, it does not even matter to me. Match of the year or bust…
Winner: Dean Ambrose
Paul Leazar: Fun fact! The very second Dean Ambrose pulled down that contract in his match against Cena, I was on ticketmaster to buy my tickets for this show. I don’t know if I posses the words to write how hyped up I am for this match, but I can tell you this much. This match will be a Match of the Year Candidate. Dean is going to go nuts inside the Cell to do whatever he can to put Seth down, and Seth is going to bump like crazy. The feud ends here though I think, and Dean needs to win this one, so I’m going with Dean after Dirty Deeds onto the base of the steel steps because WWE loves to use that finish for Cell matches.
Winner: Dean Ambrose
Wyatt Beougher: If for some reason the WWE decides not to let Cesaro and Ziggler cut loose, look for this match to be the show stealer, although I’m ultimately not fond of the Dean Ambrose that we saw on Monday Night. For whatever reason, his promo with the mannequin felt forced, like he wanted to do something different and the WWE said, “Nope, here’s a dummy, go be a WILD AND CRAAAZZZYYY GUY”. Still, though, the in-ring chemistry between Rollins and Ambrose is palpable, and this match, for however long it lasts before THE DEMON CORPORATE KANE interferes and earns Rollins the win, should be extremely good. I predict a bunch of old school stalling and running away from Rollins, with Ambrose getting increasingly angry. When he finally gets his hands on Rollins, he’s going to do his best to murder him, but, like I said, Corporate Kane is going to interfere and Rollins is going to escape by the skin of his teeth. I think it would be a fun callback to Kane’s debut if he ripped the door of the Cell off to help Rollins get the win, but this is 2014 WWE and I just don’t see that happening (plus, it’s not the main event, and Orton/Cena still need the cage door intact for their match). Other things I don’t see happening in this match, no matter how much the internet wants them to: one or both guys getting out of the Cell and climbing to the top of it, anyone taking a massive bump off of the top of the Cell, anyone bleeding from having their face rubbed on the Cell like a grater, and yeah, pretty much everything every wrestling fan on the internet thinks is going to happen. But that’s not a bad thing – I think a match like I described could be really, really good. Rollins running away and basically doing everything in his power to avoid Ambrose and then repeatedly sneak attacking him would build tension, Ambrose beating the holy hell out of Rollins for a sustained period near the end of the match would give the fans a measure of satisfaction, and the Kaneterference keeps this feud going by denying Ambrose (and, by proxy, the fans) his full revenge on Rollins.
Winner: Rollins via Curb Stomp after Kaneterference
Gary Vaughan: I personally cannot wait to see this match. We can only hope these two talents give us the match we think they can provide. Dean Ambrose should get his payback in the cell. There is no place for Seth Rollins to run. Now, I think we will see Rollins get a little help from the outside, but I’m not sure that will be enough. I think Ambrose will do whatever it takes to win or at least destroy Seth Rollins.
Winner: Dean Ambrose
Daniel Anderson: I really, really hope that this match is good. I do not want any outside interference, screwy finishes, or anything else. Let these two just go at each other in a long, drawn out battle, and have a clean finish. Sadly, I doubt that will happen. Either most of the match will take place outside the Cell or The Corporation will somehow interfere causing Ambrose the match. If these two are given plenty of time though, this could make us forget about yet another Orton vs Cena match.
Winner: Seth Rollins via some type of Corporate interference.
Michael Weyer: We know these guys can mix it up great in the ring and the Cell should just make it even better. It might well be the match of the night as they’ll do their best to elevate themselves up more and steal the show. Was going for Rollins but Ambrose has been on a big roll and a Cell win is a good way to build him up more which WWE can use so hopefully they make that choice here. Either way, expect a great match as both guys show their stuff well.
Winner: Dean Ambrose
b>Mike Hammerlock: Finally we get the kind of violent fucking confrontation this event was designed to highlight. Yes, I’m working blue in this preview … because it’s Hell in a God Damn Cell, one of the true legacies of the Attitude Era. Ever since HIAC became a PPV the actual HIAC matches have failed to grasp the deeply personal nature of what makes this such a potentially explosive contest. Instead of two guys wanting to rip each other apart in the ring, it’s become a glorified cage match designed to keep away outside interference. Undertaker vs. Kane in 2010 had the right animosity in the build, but too much voodoo and a terrible actual match robbed it of anything like potency. Rollins-Ambrose might be the first actual HIAC PPV match that truly belongs in the cell. Rollins betrayed Ambrose and then basically tried to kill Ambrose (or at least reduce him to a vegetative state). Ambrose has been obsessed with revenge, but Rollins has been playing the Roadrunner to Ambrose’s Coyote. Both guys want this. Ambrose wants to punish Rollins. Rollins wants to eliminate Ambose from the picture so he can focus on a cash-in. This damn well better be the main event. I don’t care who wins. I don’t think either one has to win as long as we get a killer match. I could even get behind a muddled finish where the “bullying manchild with a narcissistic personality disorder” (credit to D2Kvirus for that line) sticks his nose where it’s not wanted and costs Ambrose the match, setting off the Ambrose-Cena feud that could wonders for both guys. However, I suspect the WWE plays the most obvious hand with Ambrose getting his revenge, though I’m not sure how you book Ambrose winning without him trying to mutilate a prone Seth Rollins.
Winner: Dean Ambrose
Alex Crowder: If these two put on the match that I suspect they will, it will end up as a match of the year candidate(there are few in WWE this year); especially, since WWE has been light on those this year. This is one of the few feuds that deserve a Hell in a Cell finale because it has been well-written for the most part and both guys hate each other a lot. If these two come out and beat the hell out of each other while having a good match…I don’t see how any of us lose. This is the match to look forward to at Hell in a Cell. I just hope they get the rightful main event spot they deserve. I’m going say Dean Ambrose finally gets some measure of revenge against Seth Rollins, but you can’t go wrong with either man winning. I hope this doesn’t end, and I would love to see Rollins curbstomp Ambrose after the match to continue the feud.
Winner: Dean Ambrose
Sean Garmer: We are all expecting amazing things from this match. These two know each other so well and will be looking to tear the house down and perhaps take the Cell apart trying to get at each other. I really can’t wait to see this match and I hope it is given the time and the free reign to be the MOTYC that we know it can be. I don’t need to describe this or anything, you all know what this is gonna be, GREAT!!!
Winner: Dean Ambrose (After putting Rollins through like two tables or something crazy)
Justin Watry: My interest level for this PPV is a 4.5 out of 5 because I am jacked for this PPV for four reasons. 1. I want to see if there is another “WATRY” sign in the crowd. Hopefully, Monday night was not a one-off in Kansas City. If you are attending the show this weekend, by all means, show your support! 2. The Cena vs. Orton match may by overdone, but the #1 contenders stipulation does give it some extra juice. I am going to be watching that one closely, especially with Seth Rollins and Randy Orton not getting along these days. 3. Any chance we get the big reveal of The Wyatt Family promos? Maybe, maybe not. Sister Abigail debuting is my guess. Right or wrong, the payoff could come Sunday. 4. Finally, I already said it above. Ambrose and Rollins should deliver THE 2014 match of the year this Sunday. There is absolutely no other option in my opinion. They are far too talented to let this opportunity go by without wrestling a classic.
Paul Leazar: My interest level for this PPV is a 5 out of 5: I’d probably give this a four if I wasn’t going to be there, but Ambrose/Rollins & Ziggler/Cesaro should be gold, Rusev/Show & The Tag Title Match should be pretty darn good, and everything else should be passable or better. The wrestling isn’t the problem with this show, it’s the booking for the show. Half of these feuds got nothing entertaining at all behind them, let alone any story. That is huge, huge downer, but being there and watching live will make all the difference for me at least.
Wyatt Beougher: My interest level for this PPV is a 4: From a storyline perspective, it’s probably about a 1.5, but the prospect of Cesaro/Ziggler and seeing Mizdow doing his thing during the US title match bumps up my anticipation for the overall event pretty significantly. Like the past few PPVs MONTHLY SPECIALS, this show has the potential to exceed its bland booking in the ring, but I’m just not sure that it will. Aside from swapping the contenders for the secondary belts and putting Ambrose and Rollins in the Cell, this is all stuff we’ve seen before. Hopefully it’s all passable wrestling, or I’m not even going to be able to get excited for what has always been one of my favorite PPVs next month in Survivor Series.
Gary Vaughan: My Interest for This PPV is a 4/5 I think we will have a clearer look at the WWE landscape after Hell In a Cell. Now, I’m not saying it’s going to be a pretty picture, but I do think we will know more about where every piece of the puzzle will belong. Honestly, this show could go either way if you ask me. Let’s just hope we are going to get a show we feel good about by the end, plus I will be there LIVE so I’m pumped.
Daniel Anderson: My interest level for this PPV is a 4 out of 5: Ambrose vs Rollins and Ziggler vs Cesaro are the two big draws for me for this PPV. The only thing keeping this from being a 5 for me is the 500th Cena vs Orton match and the Bella match. Nothing else is really offensive to me, but nothing else is really exciting either. This PPV has the potential to be one of the year’s best, or if booked insanely, one of the year’s worst. We will just have to watch on Sunday (only $9.99 to watch on the WWE Network) to find out which it will be.
Michael Weyer: My interest level for this PPV is a 4: From a storyline perspective, it’s probably about a 1.5, but the prospect of Cesaro/Ziggler and seeing Mizdow doing his thing during the US title match bumps up my anticipation for the overall event pretty significantly. Hopefully it’s all passable wrestling, or I’m not even going to be able to get excited for what has always been one of my favorite PPVs next month in Survivor Series.
MIke Hammerlock: My interest level for this PPV is a 2: As I mentioned in Fact or Fiction this week, I’m onto obligation watching with the WWE. It’s been mostly awful since WrestleMania and I thought the run up to WrestleMania was fairly shoddy too. Now I’m watching in the hopes it turns things around, hopefully sooner rather than later. The silver lining in that cloud is the talent is phenomenal. On any given night, the performers can deliver some scintillating matches. Rollins-Ambrose has MOTY potential. Ziggler-Cesaro and Usos-Dust Brothers are sure-fire pairings. Rusev-Show have great ring chemistry. Sheamus-Miz has sleeper potential. AJ-Paige can deliver if they get a little time. And, much as no one wants to see it, Orton-Cena have really good matches against each other. Hell in a Cell could turn out to be a really hot wrestling card. Just wish we didn’t have to swim through a sea of shit to get here.
Alex Crowder: My interest level for this PPV is a 3 out of 5 I have to concur with Wyatt’s theory that the story-lines themselves are about a 1.5, but the participants in these matches will kick things up a notch. I’m actually really excited for Ambrose and Rollins. The Tag Title Match, IC Title Match, and Divas Match should all be entertaining if nothing else. Also, a Damien Mizdow sighting is always welcome, so I’m going to say that the talent boosts this special show. I’m kind of disappointed that we’ve seen all this before. I feel like we’ve seen these same matches since June or July, but that does make for better chemistry between wrestlers. In conclusion, I expect a decent outing for a place-holder special show.
Sean Garmer: My interest level for this PPV is a 4 out of 5: This PPV certainly has a card that could be memorable depending on how the booking team is feeling going into the show. Ambrose vs. Rollins should be spectacular, Cesaro vs. Ziggler should be fantastic, then you have some other title matches that could be good as well. Who knows, Cena and Orton could bring their A game and decide to pull off some crazy stuff. I’m also a bit biased because the PPV is happening in my hometown and I want it to be awesome for my friends Gary and Paul that are going. Let’s hope for all of us that this is one of those B PPV’s that we remember.
