Russell Doane spoke with MMAjunkie about his fight with Pedro Munoz at UFC Fight Night 90. Some highlights are below:

On his training for the fight: “My teammates tried to kill me. He tried to bring the animal back out in me. We had times we probably lost brain cells and we’re stupider because of it.”

On the health risks to his approach: “All fights are reckless. You can’t really control what’s happening. But if somebody got hurt, we waited a little bit, or we’d bring in another partner. But for the most part, nobody really got hurt, and we stepped it up.”

On going full-bore in his training early on: “No matter what happened, I was going to be in the gym, I was going to train, and I was going to fight. If I was looking for a job, and that job was when I couldn’t train, I wouldn’t take the job.”

On trying to turn things around after his two recent losses: “I had to evaluate myself and what got me here. I was in the gym and I was just hungry, always. My coach had to tell me to take a break, take a week off, you’re not allowed to work out.”

On facing Munoz: “As soon as I heard about it, I got super excited. There are some guys, you hear you’re going to fight them, and it’s a boring fight in your head. But this fight really got me off my ass in the gym. It made me work hard.”
