Glass Shatters Box Office With $40 Million Opening

Abysmal reviews and a 36% rating on Rotten Tomatoes was not enough to shatter the audience interest in the M. Night Shyamalan sequel, Glass. The movie still had an excellent opening weekend, bringing in an estimated $40.58 million opening weekend, per Box Office Mojo.

The film is currently tracking to finish with $47 million for the four-day holiday weekend. However, it’s going to open somewhat lower than its expected $50 million predictions. However, the opening weekend doubles the film’s $20 million budget. That means the film is well on the way to profitability, figuring prints and advertising budget into account.

Opening at No. 2 this week was the poignant dramedy The Upside, starring Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston. The film finished second at $15.67 million. The film is expected to finish with about $19.5 million for the holiday weekend. It’s current total also sits at $43 million after 11 days of release. It will likely have a total of about $48 million after the holiday.

The drop for The Upside for its second weekend came out to only 23 percent, which is very good for this type of film coming out at this time of the year. With a budget of only $37.5 million, this film is unquestionably a success story for STX Entertainment, despite the film receiving fairly mixed to negative reviews (40 percent on Rotten Tomatoes).

The biggest success story of the weekend is undoubtedly the limited release anime picture, Dragon Ball Super: Broly. It finished at No. 3 with $10 million, bringing its US domestic total to $21 million. That’s with a fairly limited theater count of about 1,223 theaters. Not only that, it’s a larger opening weekend than the total domestic haul for the maligned 2009 live-action Dragonball Evolution movie from 20th Century Fox.

Elsewhere, DC and WB’s Aquaman continues to do well. The film came in No. 4 this weekend with another $10.3 million. That brings the film’s current domestic total to $304.3 million and counting. It’s also at $1.063 billion worldwide.

Finally, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse continues to do well. It rounds out the top five with another $7.2 million. That brings the animated picture’s domestic total to $158.2 million.
