Anthony Michael Hall sees potential in a remake of The Breakfast Club. The John Hughes classic released in 1985 and co-starred Hall, who played the role of the “nerd” Brian. Hall recently spoke with Inverse for a new interview and during the discussion, conversation about potential remakes of the so-called “Brat Pack” films of the ’80s came up. Hall said that he could see one made of the high school detention dramedy.

The Breakfast Club is another one that comes up,” Hall said. “I think that’s really interesting because there’s a real strong anti-bullying message to the film, which became clear to me over these decades, and I think is powerful. So that’s another one that might be remade in the future.”

He continued, “It’s not for me to decide that. Obviously, it’s Universal and the estate of Mr. Hughes, but I think that one could be right for a remake.”

The Breakfast Club starred Hall, Emilio Estevez, Molly Ringwald, Judd Nelson, and Ally Sheedy as the titular group of students stuck in Saturday detention for various reasons. The film was a massive hit with $51.5 million worldwide against a $1 million budget and is considered one of the late Hughes’ greatest films. It joined the United States National Film Registry, which selects films for preservation based on being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant,” in 2016.

While a remake of the film has never been officially in the works, Hughes did consider a sequel set 20 years after the events of the original film to follow up on the teens and where they were in their 30s. Hughes passed away in 2009 and the film never materialized.
