AJ Lee’s possible return was teased on the WWE Clash in Paris post-show, and a new report notes that her name has been brought up backstage. Big E. and Jackie Redmond noted on the post-show that Becky Lynch’s attack on CM Punk to help Seth Rollins retain the World Heavyweight Championship could herald Lee’s return to the company. Fightful Select reports that WWE sources have indicated that Lee’s name has been brought up in several creative pitches as of late and that as soon as Lynch appeared in the main event, sources said they were hopeful that the pitches they’d heard about were related to that.
Lee has said that she is not interested in returning to the ring since she retired in 2015. Notably, when Lee was with WOW: Women of Wrestling, she made it clear that she didn’t have an interest in wrestling but would be open to serving in other capacities. That said, Fightful Select notes that they’ve heard the pitches that have been made “weren’t quite shut down” the way that they used to be.
To be 100% clear, there is no confirmation that Lee is set to return to the company. However, sources in WWE said that there has been more traction on the notion than in past years. One higher-up had told Fightful in the last few weeks that if Lee were to return, they would not be concerned about her time away as she looks as if she just left TV and is married to someone who also took a long time off and then returned, among other reasons.
The report points out that Punk paid homage to Lee on the European tour when he would “skip around the ring.” The report adds that when Lee worked as a performer on the wrestling drama Heels, she appeared nervous about getting into the ring but that once she got in there it was like she’d never left.
